STATES OF MATTER
Classification of matter
Matter can be classified into three states 1. Solid 2. Liquid 3. Gas
Examples of various states of matter
Solid : Stones, chalk
Liquid : Salt solution, Water, Kerosene
Gas : Oxygen, Neon
Molecular arrangement in solids
Discussion points
1.what do you observe?
2.Is any attractve force between the molecules?
3.What about the distance between the molecules?
1.molecules are closely packed
2.force of attraction is high
3.molecular distance is less
Consolidation
In solid state molecules are closely packed. The attractive force between the molecules is vey high and the distance between the molecules is very negligible.
Molecular arrangement in liquids
Discussion points
1.what do you observe?
2.Is the molecular force between the molecules more or less than solid state?
3.what about the distance between the molecules?
1.molecules are loosely arranged.
2.distance between the molecules is more than solid state
3.attractive force is less than solid state
Molecular arrangement in gases
Discussion points
1.What do you observe?
2.Is the attractive force between the molecules more or less than liquid state?
3. What about the distance between the molecules?
1.molecules are very loosely arranged
2.attraction between the molecules is very less
3.distance between the molecules is very high
Consolidation
In gaseous state molecules are very loosely arranged. The distance between the molecules is more than liquid state. So the attractive force between the molecules are less than liquid state.
