Young High School held its Ath-letic Awards banquet at Land'sEnd Restaurant m Sayville onJune 4 to honor its varsitylettermen.

The banquet was sponsored bytbe G.O. and was attended byapproximately 80 students andtheir guests.

Gary Davis, vice president ofthe G.O., was master of cere-monies and introduced CoachJoseph Vignato , head of the ath-letic department, who spoketriefly on sportsmanship and de-sire, "The Key to Success".

The guest speaker was WilliamThieben, vice - principal of BayShore High School , who spoke onthe roll of an athlete in highschool and his responsibilitiesto his school and com munity .

Other guests included NormanH. Gray, vice president of theBoard of Education; Melvin Hill ,supervising principal; RobertCovell , principal of the highschool , and Col. R.P. Craft , as-sistant principal of the highschool.

Mr. Gray honored tlie outstand-ing athletes of the school by pre-senting them with \arsiry jac-kets. Those inducted this yearwere Gary Divis, Bob Drzal ,Walt Adams , Bod Goodall , BillNeuss, Bob Lew is, Gene Mon-tenare , Michael v\ riston , CraigHorman and Joe Gars.

dent of the Long Island StatePark Commission, today re-minded surf fishermen that theopening of the new bridge acrossFire Island Inlet , together withthe new parking facilities atRobert Moses State Park onFire Island, will open severalmiles of fine fishing waters,previously reached only by ferry.

All dunes within the park havebeen strengthened and plantedwith ground cover as protectionagainst storm and wind erosion.Private vehicles and beachbuggies are not permitted totravel on beach areas and mustuse park roads and parking fields.The parking f ields, however, arewell spaced and the fishermenmay, as at Jones Beach, fish allsurf areas 400 feet beyond theparking areas. Fire Island surfis particularly noted for blue fishand striped bass.

A HICHLIGHT OF THE FISHING NEWS this week was the boatingof a 36-pound, 4-ounce striped bass by Jose Ferrer of EastMoriches. Jose took the striper Sunday while fishing on boardthe "Sundowner", skippered by Andy Lovito of Center Moriches.The fish was taken offshore, approximately one mile west of theMoriches Inlet.

The lunker became the first bass entered into the Striped Bass-Bluefish Sweepstakes sponsored by the Moriches Tackle andSporting Goods Shop, at 310 Main Street, Center Moriches . "Itmay be the first , but there will be plenty more," Saul Feinberg,owner, told us this week.

congregate, flounder , fluke and blowfish still provide the action.SKIDMORE'S FISHING STATION, East Moriches, reports plenty

of nice size flounders , not too many blowfish but enough to satisfythose looking for them, some fluke , and had a boat return Sundaywith some Bluefish .

CERULLO BROS. FISHING STATION , East Moriches , reports47 fluke , caught during the weekend . Saturday was more productivethan Sunday, when a strong wind swept acr*ss the bay. The flukeaveraged 2 to 3 pounds, with a 5 and 6-pounder thrown in for goodmeasure. Lots of flounders , of good size, with one going 1 pound8 ounces, and not too many blowfish , provided the rest of theactivity.

SILLY LILLY FISHING STATION, East Moriches , reports wellover 100 fl uke taken durin g the weekend, avera 6ing in the 2 to 3pound class. Flounders , again , getting bigger , some blows anda few blackfish, caught on the mussle beds in the inlet channel ,helping to fill the fishbags.

GEIGER'S FISHING STATION, East Moriches , reports a fewfluke , plenty of flounders and some blowfish providing their actionfor their customers.

LIL JOE'S FISHING STATION , Mastic Beach , reports flounders ,blowfish , and several fluke were taken fro m their boatsduringChe weekend.

FRED'S BOAT HOUSE , MASTIC BEACH , tells us that flukeaction Is picking up In their area, but flounder action seems tobe tapering off. Plenty of blowfish around , tho, and stripet s andblackfish have been taken ln the Smith' s Point Bridge area.

* * «SPEAKING OF FISHING STATIONS, a giant step forward was

accomplis hed Thursday with the formation of the Mastic-MorichesFishing Station Association. This new organization , many yearsin the making, will offer rowboat station owners a unified voicein the solving of their problems. Charter members of the groupinclude the operators of the following fishing stations: Silly Lilly,East Moriches; L and M, Mastic Beach;Shoreline, Center Moriches;Li 'l Joe's, Mastic Beach; Geiger 's, East Moriches; Cert ulloBros ., East Moriches; and Skidmore s, East Moriches.

The new association will also gear its efforts toward promotingsafe boating, and honest and courteous service for all theircusotmers.

One of the first problems confronting the group is the Increasedissuing of tickets to rowboat fishermen for alledgely anchoring"in the channel . The station operators mainta in that in some in-stances, when , despite warnings, fishermen Insist on this practice,tickets should be Issued. However, they add, ln many instancesinsufficient channel markings confuse rowboat fishermen , themajority of which come from the city area, and a warning ratherthan a ticket would correct the situation. The group has arrangeda meeting with Suffolk County Executive H. Lee Dennison todiscuss the possibility of adding channel markers ln the area tohelp solve the problem to everyone's satisfaction.

The group will meet again June 23 to formally elect officersto lead their activities. As an added note, this writer , and FrankBruce, who conducts a fishing show on VVPAC , were given honorarymemberships ln the organization.

CAPTAIN WILLIE BUTTLER, skipper of the open-charter boatthe "Falcon", sailing from the Sallvar Dock, Montauk , reportsthat pollack are providing a lot of action for Montauk fishermen,with stripers being taken also. Sea bass and porgies action ispicking up, Captain Butler also reports .

• • *A SEAL HUNT, TEXAS STYLE, took place last week at Li'lJoe 's Fishing Station, Mastic Beach. The hunt started whenRoger Lawton, up fro m Texas between school teaching duties ,and Jack Phillips of Shirley Marine Center, spotted a seal swimm-ing past the stations dock. Off they went, ln a Boston Whaler ,with Roger in the bow shouting, "There he is Jack, no, now he Isover there." The pair and the seal zlg-zagged across the bay.Unfortunately, Roger had no lasso along to show Jack how they dothese things down ln Texas, and the seal finally made good hisescape. Where he came from , or where he went, is anyone's guess.Wonder if he will bite on a worm. T'would be quite a catch for aflounder fi sherman.

The Medford Brau Haus andthe Carlson Homes, league lead-ers In the Brookhaven Town Rec-reation North Patchogue Slo-Ballcircuit, continued their winninghabit last week as both clubs wonby lopsided scores.

The Brau Haus, out to challengeCarlson 's hold on league suprem-acy this year , battered theK. & J.Hardware at the North BellportField 25 - 15 as they scored inevery Inning to raise their num-ber of wins for the season tofive without a loss.

Carlson , not to be outdone,gave an illustration of what cham-pionship teams are made of asthey blanked the Selden Banditsat Hallock behind the six hithurling of Clarence Maler , 20 - 0.

In the one other North Patch-ogue encounter the Bruno's Bar& Grill turned back the Patch-ogue Moose , 22 - 10.

The Brau Haus now hold aone-half first place lead overCarlson. Reggie Cessman, JohnMasen and Charlie Howard paced

the Brau Haus with home runs.Al Marhold had a round tripperfor the losers.

Carlson Homes blanked theBandies ac Hallock Park as Clar-ence Maler limited the Banditsto just six hits. Six Carlsonhome runs did most of the damageto the Bandits as Bill Cockerlll ,Mike Savlno, Mike Zguris, JoeMannino, Norris Gilman andClarence Maler all hit for thedistance. Zguris led the attackas he had a triple, double andsingle to go along with his homerun to hit for the cycle.
