Getting Started with E-Module Building Before building your first e-module, view a completed lesson: http://elearning.sandiegozoo.org/jaguar/jaguar.htm. There is also a Captivate practice module based on the Lion Basic e-module that you can use to orient yourself to e-module building. Please ask the Interpretive Specialist to provide you with the Lion Basic Practice files.

File Management: Keep your files on the shared network drive. For each e-module that you start, create a master folder named for the animal or exhibit, and within that folder, create a subfolder for each type of asset. For example:

Selecting template pages: Sometimes you will have more than one layout option for a slide. For example, you can choose to put the picture on the right or on the left. Alternate between the template page options to add visual interest to the module.

Selecting images: The Interpretive Specialist will provide a folder of images related to the e-module topic. As you build the e-module, you will select appropriate images based on the e-module copy then crop or edit them in Photoshop to fit the template page.

Planning your work: Plan to spend 8 to 32 hours on building the module, depending upon the length. You may receive e-module assets at different times during the project as they come in by request from different departments.

E-module building process: This Quick Start Guide is designed so that it can be used linearly to build an entire e-module. You can start with Open and Set Up Captivate Template, and continue in order through the Guide until you get to Preview, Troubleshoot and Publish. As you get more experience with e-module building, the Guide may serve more of a reference tool role for quick look-up of a Captivate or Photoshop procedure you haven’t performed in a while.

Save your work: As you work on building the e-module, remember to save your work often!

Open and Set Up Captivate Template

Open a New Project

Launch Adobe Captivate and open a new project from the e-module template Interpretive-template 2.cptl. *(Important: Do not open/edit the Interpretive-template 2.cptl file directly unless you need to make changes to the template for all future e-modules.)

1. If Captivate is already open: File > New Project > Project from Temp If Captivate is not yet open: Create New > From Template

2. Navigate to the template folder and open Interpretive-template 2.cptl.

3. File > Save As

Newname <currentyear>.cptx Use the animal or exhibit name and current year, and save it in the Captivate files folder. For example:

Add Slides

The Interpretive template only has one slide of each type. You may need additional copies of a particular slide.

Tip: See the e-Learning Development & Style Guide for information about how each slide type is used.

The e-module copy that you will receive from the Interpretive Specialist will be broken down into the Major Sections (which follow the e-module standard navigation), and sub-sections for the e-module. The major sections in the e-module copy (INTRODUCTION, PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS, etc.) correspond to title slides that are linked to the navigation bar. These slides are in the template, so they will already be in your new project.

Within each e-module major Section slide, add new slides as needed based on the number of sub-head content areas. Each sub-head gets its own slide. For example:

Size and Crop Photos in Photoshop

The following steps are for editing an image in Photoshop, which is the preferred tool.

For each page of the e-module that requires an image, you will need to select (from the files provided by the Interpretive Specialist) the photo that best illustrates the e-module copy or text. Selected images then need to be cropped to remove unwanted parts and resized to the appropriate dimensions for the template page.

The e-module template specifies these image sizes:

1. Picture on left 708x470 pixels 2. Picture on right 608x470 pixels 3. Picture on top 570x1024 pixels 4. Whole page 768x1024 pixels 5. Snap It! quiz 360x360 pixels

The images you receive from the Interpretive Specialist will be in JPEG (.jpg) format. All images that you crop or modify in Photoshop should be saved to JPEG format with the exception of images that need to be made intro transparent background images (Mask an Image in Photoshop section of Guide). Transparent images must be saved in PNG format.

With the exception of transparent PNG images, DO NOT rename the images after editing.

Tips: Have Photoshop and Captivate open at the same time to easily move back and forth as you select images for a particular slide then crop and resize them to fit.

In Photoshop you can undo steps by using Step Backward from the Edit Menu (Edit > Step Backwards).

Quick Start Guide 10 ©2012 San Diego Zoo Global®

1. To crop or resize an image. In Photoshop, Open image from e-module images folder File > Open

2. Crop to a specific size. Select the Crop Tool in the Tool bar or click C on your keyboard.

3. Enter the desired Width and Height

in pixels (px) in the Crop Tool Options bar.

Tip: The two-way arrows between the width and height fill in boxes allow you to swap these values.

4. With Crop Tool selected, drag your mouse across the image to select the area to crop.

Note that the selected area will be constrained to the aspect ratio (H, W) that you specified in the Crop Tool Options Bar.

5. Use your mouse to drag the overlay box (pictured here is the Rule of Thirds overlay grid) to the desired composition. The parts outside the box will be removed.

Tip: The ‘Rule of Thirds overlay’ grid is a composition helper tool. You can change this to a regular Grid or None:

6. Double Click in the overlay grid, or

use Image > Crop to remove unwanted area.

Page 15: How to Use the SDZG E-learning Template in Captivateauralippincott.weebly.com/uploads/9/3/5/2/9352347/... · Size and Crop Photos in Photoshop The following steps are for editing

Quick Start Guide 12 ©2012 San Diego Zoo Global®

7. Freeform crop. Use freeform crop if you don’t have set height and width requirements. With Crop tool selected, drag your mouse over the image. For constrained proportions (both height and width change), click and drag the handles on the overlay box corners. For either height or width, click and drag the handles on the sides of the overlay box.

8. Crop to Height only. Template pages have strict image height requirements. You have some flexibility to increase an image width beyond what is specified by the template image placeholder if needed. Follow the steps above for cropping to Height and Width, but leave the Width blank in the Crop Tool Options bar.

Tip: Need to check the original image size? Use the Image menu:

Image > Image size

Tip: You can change image dimension in the Image Size dialog box when you are ready to add the modified width. Make sure ‘Constrain Proportions’ is checked before you add the Width value (otherwise the image will be distorted).

Cut Out an Image in Photoshop

Some images (e.g., the “Facts & Figures” and “Hunt for Adaptations” template pages) should be cut outs (figure on transparent background), which require Photoshop masking where you will remove the background of the image. Photoshop offers several tools and techniques to achieve this, but the recommended tools are the Magic Wand and Lasso.

1. Open the JPEG image in Photoshop File > Open

2. Add Transparent Layer.

Add a new Layer, which will be set at transparent replacing or masking the background selection. Double Click the Background Layer in the Layers panel.

3. New Layer dialog box appears. Make sure Color is set to None, click OK.

Page 18: How to Use the SDZG E-learning Template in Captivateauralippincott.weebly.com/uploads/9/3/5/2/9352347/... · Size and Crop Photos in Photoshop The following steps are for editing

Quick Start Guide 15 ©2012 San Diego Zoo Global®

4. Now remove the background of

the image. Select the Magic Wand Tool in the Tool Panel. Hold down the Quick Selection Tool in the Tools panel to access this option. Tools panel > Quick Selection Tool > Magic Wand Tool

5. In the Magic Wand Option panel, set the Tolerance level. The Tolerance level dictates the range of sampled colors that will be selected by the Magic Wand Tool (The range is 0 black to 256 white).

Tip: Since many of the images you will be working with have less contrasting colors (the colors are more similar) try different values to see what works best. Your goal is to have the Magic Wand select only the parts you want to discard around the animal form (background colors), but not the animal form itself.

Page 19: How to Use the SDZG E-learning Template in Captivateauralippincott.weebly.com/uploads/9/3/5/2/9352347/... · Size and Crop Photos in Photoshop The following steps are for editing

Quick Start Guide 16 ©2012 San Diego Zoo Global®

6. With the Magic Wand selected, click into the image background. To add to the selected background, click the Shift key on your keyboard and continue clicking on the background.

Tip: Select > Grow will add to your background selection.

Tip: Often the Magic Wand will select parts of the image you want to keep. When this happens, click the Option key on your keyboard with the Magic Wand tool enabled.

Option click allows you to undo from the background selection. A minus sign will show on the Magic Wand (-). Shift click allows you to add to your selected background. A plus sign will show on the Magic Wand (+).

Tip: Use Step Backward to undo Magic Wand selection. Edit > Step Backward

Quick Start Guide 17 ©2012 San Diego Zoo Global®

7. Clean up the selection using the Lasso Tool. The Magic Wand tool is not very precise (particularly with images that don’t have a lot of contrast). The Lasso Tool allows you to select or deselect smaller areas.

Tools menu > Lasso Tool

8. With the Lasso Tool selected, use your mouse to drag around an area. Shift click allows you to add to the background selection. A plus sign will show on the Lasso Tool (+). Option click allows you to subtract from the background selection. A minus sign will show on the Lasso Tool (-).

9. Optionally, you can use Quick Mask Mode to check the quality of the lines around the animal form. The animal form will be masked in red. Note the areas that need to be touched up (added back to the animal form or added to the background you are removing) Tools menu > Quick Mask Mode (or type Q on your keyboard)

10. When you are finished the

selected background will be surrounded with dotted lines.

Show/Hide Items

Some slides have stacked layers, which make it difficult to select the placeholder you want. You can temporarily hide chosen items in order to access all placeholders easily.

1. From the Filmstrip, select the slide. Example: Facts and Figures slide Notice how the image placeholder of the measuring_tape_slidelet blocks access to the Male/female text placeholder.

2. In the timeline, at the top between the lock icon and the ruler, adjust the panel to see the full names of the slide objects.

3. Locate the top layer and click the radio button in the Show/Hide Item column.

In this example, it is the third item listed in the timeline.

You can now access the Male/female text placeholder.

Tip: To show the top layer again, click the X in the Show/Hide Item column.

Prepare to Publish, Preview and Troubleshoot Run spellcheck and delete unused slides, then test out your lesson before publishing by using the Preview tool.

Spellcheck

1. Project > Check Spelling

Delete Slides

Once all content is added to the template (text, images, video, audio, and quizzes), go through the e-module and delete any extra slides, including major Section slides and quiz slides that are not being used. Section slides are key to the e-module navigation so before deleting blank Section slides, re-label the first used slide in that section to act as the section header (usually the slide immediately following the blank Section slide).

Tip: Review the e-Learning Development & Style Guide section on e-module template navigation to gain an understanding of how the template navigation works. You can also find troubleshooting information for fixing the navigation if needed.

1. Copy label of a Section slide onto the first slide after the Section slide:

a. Select Section slide in Filmstrip

c. In Filmstrip, select the first slide after the Section slide

d. In Properties, paste the new text into Label field

2. Delete the blank Section slide:

a. Select slide in the Filmstrip

b. Press the Delete key, or use the menu bar: Edit >Delete

3. Repeat this process for each major Section slide except the slides noted in red.

Tip: If you accidentally delete a template slide or decide you need it later, you can copy it from a fresh e-module template (File > New Project > Project from Template).

Additional Captivate files open in tabs so you can easily toggle between projects.

Additional Steps The e-learning module building process requires several more steps. Don’t forget to do the following:

Send for Review

1. Copy files to a public folder in the Drop box.

a. Copy and paste ALL of the files that Captivate creates when it publishes, including video and audio files. (If you select and drag the files, they will be moved OUT of your folder, so be sure to use the "Copy" and Paste" commands.)

b. Files are done copying when the blue "recycle" logo turns to a green check mark.

2. Launch the Drop box web site and create a public link for the .swf file.

3. Send the Drop box link for the .swf file to the reviewers via e-mail.

Edit Module

1. Update the module based on the feedback e-mails you receive from the reviewers.

2. Keep the Interpretation Specialist in the loop regarding the changes you make.

Make Module Available for Training

1. Upload the final module to the FTP site.

2. Test the live version of the module to confirm that it plays properly.

3. Notify the Interpretive Specialist to add the link to the index page.

4. Notify the Interpretive Volunteer staff that the module is now available for training.
