How to Sketch a Ladle.
Sketching can be defined as making a rough drawing of something or a freehand
drawing by using a dry art material such as charcoal, pen, pencil and pastel. It
can also be defined as giving a brief idea or description out from something.
Sketching is very useful and important for this course that I am taking, namely
Foundation in Natural and Built Environments and later use for further studies
that I will take after this foundation. As far as I know, Architecture needs a lot of
sketches and drawings. Unless you were born with gifted hands and creative
mind, sketching needs time to make it as perfect as you want it to be. In
conclusion, with the help of sketching, I would draw for my assignments with
ease. My process essay is about producing an attractive sketch of my kitchen
utensils.
The kitchen Utensil that I chose is ladle. It was few years ago when my mother
bought herself a ladle somewhere in Kota Kinabalu and the day I moved in Kuala
Lumpur was the day she brought the ladle for my brother and I in our new
humble rented house in Sunway Court Apartment. It is 29 centimeter long and
the color of the scoop is black with silvered stainless steel holder. Undoubtedly,
the ladle smells and taste funny like plastic with lime soap as the soap came
fresh from the lime dishwasher liquid. The holder is hard but the scoop is
breakable. Despite the age of the ladle, the surface is not smooth and there are
few scratches around it. We use ladle most of our time. For instance, we use
ladle to make our daily meal, namely breakfast, lunch and dinner. Furthermore,
we also could use them in different ways such as stirring your hot soup, scoop a
scoop of your soup, making a musical beat from it and even better, we could also
use them as a weapon to hit robbers for self defense. I chose ladle because it is
light and easy to sketch.
Before I began to start sketching the ladle, it is important to clear the messy
things off the table so it would be easier for me to concentrate on sketching the
ladle. The things I need to sketch the ladle were eraser, ruler, an A4 sized plain
white paper, mechanical pencil with 0.5 lead and of course a 2B pencil to get that
darker shading for the sketch. I prepared some tissues too to get that best
shading effect from the pencil.
I placed my plain white paper on the desk and took out my 2B pencil off the table
where I organized the things I need for my ladle sketching. Gently without
pressing too hard and made a vertical of two straight lines with the length of 14
centimeter on the paper. The straight lines are not far apart nor it is too near from
each other. Approximately about 1.5 centimeter away from each other. Then I
connected the both lines and made a rectangle out of it. The most frustrating part
of the sketch was when I was doing the shape of the scoop for the ladle. The
halved sphere shaped part of the ladle. It was very hard for me to drew that part
as I had so many mistakes done during that part. After so many mistakes of
trying to draw a perfect shape, I still have not gotten the perfect shape. But the
shape I got is acceptable so I guess it should be okay. Obviously, I have made
the imperfect halved sphere shape of the ladle and on the other end of the
rectangle, I connected it again with an arc. Here comes the fun part of sketching
which is shading. Shading is the most important and the final step of sketching. It
makes your drawing looks slightly realistic and artistic. Especially when you are
on average rate of good in sketching like me. Consequently, I began to shade
them according to it’s lighting as it is also the final step of sketching.
Sketching the ladle took me specifically about 40 minutes. Honestly, it was not so
bad sketching it. I actually quite like it and of course I felt happy and beyond
relieved after finally finishing the sketch. My sketching may not turn out to be
what I want it to be but I am sure that it is acceptable. If you ask me if I would
sketch again, I would say why not?
