I love creating holiday gifts for my family and friends. It gives me a
thrill knowing I can make use-ful gifts for a fraction of what it costs to buy them in a store. If you enjoy adding a personal touch to your gifts, try some of these budget-wise ideas:
Decorator’s Tool Kit. Do you have a friend who has just moved into a new home or who continu-ally rearranges his/her furniture? If so, s/he will find this handy kit indispensable. Assemble the fol-lowing items in a basket, wood-en box, bucket or tote bag with a handle: a 30-foot measuring tape, light-weight hammer, pliers, a selection of picture hanger and nails, wire cutters, both types of screw drivers, several sizes of plate stands and plate hangers, push-pins, a bundle of raffia, a mini sewing kit and spackle.
Seed Saver Kit. Do you have gardening friends who enjoy exchanging seeds and cuttings throughout the year? Create a kit to make it easy and convenient. Find a lidded box or tin and col-lect eight or 10 baby-food or spice jars. Spray paint the lids in what-ever color paint you have about the house. Provide sticky-backed labels, a pencil for labeling, sev-

eral small paper bags for seed collecting, a ball of twine, scissors and recycled Popsicle sticks or wooden spoons to use as plant mark-ers. Include photocopied instructions on seed collecting from a garden book and fill one of the jars with seeds from your garden.
Fire-starter Kit. Fill an antique box, large basket or ceramic pot with a combination of hand-gathered pinecones, bundles of twigs cut to the same length and tied together with raffia or recycled holiday ribbon, and mini-rolls of newspaper cut to 12-inch lengths. In-clude several matchboxes you have decorated with leftover holiday wrap and ribbon. Add sprigs of pine bough or eucalyptus branches for color.
Basket O’Soaps. I bet you have dozens of little boxes of soaps you’ve collected dur-ing your travels sitting in a drawer some-where. This is a great way to put them to use! Scrounge up a basket (another thing people usually have stashed away gathering dust) or cover a small box with unusual paper. Wrap each soap box in tissue paper (retrieved from gift boxes). If the soap isn’t boxed, simply gather a bit of paper around it and tie with ribbon or raffia. Decorate the wrapped soaps with shells, buttons, pressed flowers or leaves, foreign coins, old stamps or images cut out from magazines. Nestle the soaps in the bas-ket along with torn tissue paper, moss or eu-calyptus leaves.
Luminaria Kit. Collect six or eight lunch-sized brown bags and fold the tops of the bags down several times. Slip a piece of cardboard into the bag and use an Exacto knife to cut out designs (pine trees, snowflakes, hearts, etc.) on one side of the bag. For a star-studded ef-fect, use a tack or pushpin to create tiny holes
all over the bag. Include a bag of sand, votive candles and hand-decorated matchboxes with your luminaria.
Zen Water Garden Kit. Find a hand-thrown bowl, or ready-made pot with a matte glaze at a thrift shop or the flea market. Gath-er a handful of river or beach pebbles. Pur-chase a bag of floating candles and decorate several matchboxes with cut-out sections of a Japanese or Chinese language newspaper. Include instructions for use: “Fill bowl with water. Arrange stones in bowl. Add floating candles and a blossom or leaf.”
Paint-Your-Own-Birdhouse Kit. Pur-chase or build a wooden birdhouse (most arts-and-crafts supply stores sell ready-to-paint birdhouses). Provide two paintbrushes and a small set of acrylic paints. Include a length of wire and an eye screw so that the birdhouse can be hung when completed. Add a fake bird and a tiny sack of birdseed to the wrappings.
Narcissus in a Teacup. Purchase an an-tique teacup from a thrift shop, or sacrifice one from your own collection. Plant one or two bulbs in the cup, adding moss to cover the base of the bulb(s). Follow your nurs-ery’s care instructions to get the bulbs started so you can present your gift as it begins to sprout.

T hinking “green” as the flood of holi-day family activities come rolling upon us requires more focus than any
of us think that we have during this busy season.
Hopefully we have purchased some gifts locally to stimulate our community’s economy. Shopping at locally owned, inde-pendent businesses may bring some unex-pected rewards. Unique gifts, quite possibly not found in other locales, along with the more obvious benefit of supporting our lo-cal shops or businesses are two examples. When they thrive, our community thrives.
Many families will be considering more modest gifts this year when a gift from them is expected or “required.” I also be-lieve the lists of gifts may be shorter in this economy, though maybe that’s not such a bad thing after all.
How do we give family members who may be in need of so much, something they will really appreciate while preserving their dignity? I have a family member back East who, like so many others, was unemployed for two years and recently obtained a part-time job. Possibly a gasoline gift card to as-sist him with the cost of commuting while waiting for his much-needed paycheck would be a very helpful gift. Many of us have someone whom we are carefully mea-suring how to help, and ponder what might be most appreciated in a season when gift giving is customarily expected.
Many of the gifts I am giving will include chocolate toffee made by a neighbor and client whose remodeled kitchen was en-larged by our company just so she could make more of her glorious homemade holi-day candy. Chocolate is almost always wel-comed in small amounts, even among us who are calorie conscious.
Buying local, green cuttings for wreaths, or decorating the dining table or stairway seems like a “green” (double green!) choice of gifts. I think we hold onto the tradition of green cuttings for multiple reasons. There is the fragrant smell of fresh holiday sprigs of pine or cedar boughs, the festive feel it lends to our homes or offices and the age-old design concept of bringing some al-fresco inside so we feel more connected to the outside, especially during our blustery winter weather.
One of my favorite “green” gift traditions is the white-elephant gift giving we do at our annual company party. This event is always fun as people really scramble and strategize to obtain a present for which the
giver has absolutely no use. This is a great form of “recycling.” Your clut-ter becomes someone else’s cherished posses-sion.
The other gift-giving quandary we all wrestle with is what to give the family member who has
everything. This dilemma has yet to be uni-versally solved.
A “green” way to solve this problem might be to make a donation in their name to a charity or nonprofit for which their family has an affinity. Certainly the needs of nonprofit organizations are at an all-time high, with people donating less when an en-larged number of unemployed Americans are in need of their services, often for the first time in their lives.
Another option would be to give the gift of time. If a family member or friend you love cherishes your presence and you enjoy being with them, that is a treasured gift requiring no purchase. What my late mother-in-law held most dear was the gift of our coming to sit with her to simply chat or even just quietly keep her company as her once-active life slowed considerably in the last six months of her 93 years. Before she passed away, I made sure to write her a lengthy personal note telling her how she influenced me positively in the 32 years I had known her. She was the one who first taught me the concept of thinking “green.” She was way ahead of her generation in so many ways.
Consider writing a personal note to a spe-cial family member or friend who will be honored by your written gift letting them know they have made a lasting impres-sion.
Everyone wants to feel like they have made a positive difference in this world in the form of some kind of “legacy.” I pon-der this legacy of “green” thinking that my mother-in-law gave me and wonder how I might carry on her legacy through my own actions while I am still here to enjoy yet another holiday season.
May your holidays be joyfully “green” in every way possible.
