Milan farmers’ market uprooted

A farmers’ market in Milan appears too cost prohibitive, and the mayor wants to do some-thing about it.

Mayor Kym Muckler said she would like to repeal portions of an ordinance that, in part, require anyone selling produce within city limits to pay a hefty fee, get a criminal background check and be fingerprinted.

Muckler said the law is only being selectively enforced, and it has forced Original Gravity Brewing Co. owner Brad Sancho to give up on his project of holding a farmers market in Milan this year.

Sancho said he started the project on the prop-erty of his brewing company in the spring.

“We started a market here in May,” Sancho said. “We had a couple of vendors every week –– maybe two or three.”

The idea for the market came when Sancho was approached by the owners of Zilke Vegetable Farm about putting one together.

“Just through talking with them, we thought it would be good to start a market,” he said.

Sancho said the sellers gathered from 4 to 7 p.m. at the outdoor beer garden portion of his brewery every Thursday before he was notified by the city that he was to stop doing so or get permits.

“We got a call on Wednesday and I was on vacation. I told my employee to just pay it, gave
