DISTRIBUTION OF THE REGISTERED HIV CASES ACCORDING TO
THE MODES OF TRANSMISSION, 2018
The analysis of the HIV cases registered in Armenia according to modes of
transmission shows that the main modes of HIV transmission are through
heterosexual practices (70%) and injec- ting drug use (20%). Additionally,
there are also registered cases through homosexual practices (4%), as well
as mother-to-child HIV transmission (1.5%) and transmission through
blood (0.1%).

As of the end of 2018 the estimated number of PLHIV was 3500 (UNAIDS
SPECTRUM data), of whom only 2589 (74%) knew about their status,
of whom 2395 (92%) were linked to HIV care, 2016 (84%) were retained in HIV
care, 1871 (93%) were on ART, and 1601 (86%) had undetectable viral load. In
terms of «90-90-90» targets Armenia has reached the level of «74-72-86».

In the last years factor of outbound labour
migration is significant. Out of the HIV
cases registered in 2009-2018 period 56%,
being labor migrants had a risky behaviour
abroad and most like got infected there.
Overall, 66% of registered HIV cases were
among labor migrants and their partners.
Thus, more than half of the HIV patients
registered during 2009-2018 had been
infected outside Armenia, of whom about
91% – in Russia (90.9% in Russia, 4.6% – in
Ukraine, 0.8%).
The registration of HIV cases in Armenian started in 1988. By the end of December 2018 3337 HIV cases were registered in the country among the citizens of Armenia, ncluding 58 cases of HIV infection among children.
AIDS diagnosis was made to 1695 patients with HIV, of whom 33 are children. 779 death cases have beenregistered among HIV/AIDS patients, including 11 children.
The HIV/AIDS situation assessment shows that the estimated number of people living with HIV in the country is about 3500.
Allocation of HIV cases by age groups and gender shows that more than half of the all registered HIV cases (51%) are aged 25-39, i.e. in active reproductive age.
