Liz Harrison Award for Outstanding Achievement in Science
Liz Harrison was a respected and admired member of the Science Faculty. She always put the needs
of her pupils at the forefront of her activities and brought out the creativity of the pupils in her Science
teaching. Despite a long course of treatment Liz continued teaching until she passed away.
This award is dedicated to her memory and aims to recognise a student for outstanding achievement
in Science.
Professional Role Players Award for Excellence in Performing Arts
This is awarded to students who have displayed the ability to work well with others and bring out the
best in all their performances throughout the year.
Frank O’Donoghue Award for Excellent Performance in GCSE Drama
Frank was a student at Highlands, who sadly passed away in 2015. This award celebrates the creative
outlet which Drama provides to young people - a vehicle to explore their feelings and emotions and
to help try to make sense of an increasingly complicated and pressurised world.
Jenny Barnett Memorial Award for Excellence in Musical Theatre
Jenny Barnett was a young woman who loved Drama and Musical Theatre, successful as both an actor,
singer and a director. Jenny died from cancer in August 2005, aged only 24. Her mother, Sonja Taylor,
Head of Arts Faculty at the time, established this award to recognise outstanding students who, like
Jenny, excelled in musical theatre.
Helen Smith Memorial Award for Mathematics
Helen Smith taught in the Mathematics Faculty from 2001 until her sudden death in 2005. During this
time she helped to shape the way Mathematics is taught at Highlands and was of particular support
to students with special needs, whether these be of the most or least able mathematicians. This award
is dedicated to her memory and aims to recognise a student who has made particularly good progress
through their commitment to learning.
Angela Genders Memorial Award for Special Academic Achievement
Angela Genders was Special Educational Needs Governor at Highlands for several years, who sadly lost
her battle with cancer in June 2009. Angela had a huge impact on everyone who knew her, with her
enthusiasm and passion for those with special needs. Angela had a special interest in students who
faced challenging situations, and a strong belief in access to a stimulating educational environment,
within a framework of confidence building and personal empowerment.
Alf Joyce Rotary Club Award for Services to the Community
The Alf Joyce Rotary Club Award is presented annually by the Southgate Rotary Club, to the student
who has made a significant contribution to the local community.
Next April some of our staff will be
running once again, in the London
Marathon
Further details about how to support us in
raising funds for this incredible charity,
and details of the fundraising page, will be
given nearer the time.
