A MESSAGE FROM CEO/PRESIDENT TERRIE D’ANTONIO
Dear Friends:
There are so many exciting happenings at HELP that we would like to share with you!
We are launching an all-new program - Framing Hope Warehouse - that will break new ground and open
many new partnerships with the Las Vegas community. The Framing Hope Warehouse will have its
grand opening on Monday, September 16.
We are actively seeking a new home for the Shannon West Homeless Youth Center. We are hoping to
relocate our youth to a neighborhood near education and employment opportunities, so our youth can
achieve their full potential. This year, nine of our residents earned high school diplomas and GED
certificates and we are so proud of these youth and so excited about what the future will bring. Look for
more information on page 4 of this newsletter.
Those of you who follow HELP on our social media sites know that our programs have made the news here in Southern Nevada
recently. Our Weatherization Department was recently featured on Channel 3 and our Youth Center Graduation Celebration was
covered by Channel 5 and Channel 8. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter, if you don’t already, for up-to-date news on HELP and its
day-to-day activities. And, look for a feature on HELP in the August issue of Diamond Cake magazine! You’ll be pleasantly surprised.
Thank you so much for your support in 2013 and for being a part of our success.
Terrie D’Antonio

The Community Alternative Sentencing (CAS) program at HELP of Southern Nevada (HELP) offers individuals in
the court system the opportunity to serve the community, save taxpayers the cost of incarceration, and provide
manpower to nonprofits and government agencies.
During sentencing, the court system can allow community service in lieu of all or a portion of a fine or
incarceration. There are over 80 organizations in Southern Nevada where our CAS clients can be placed.
These organizations must be a federally recognized 501 (c)(3) nonprofit agency or government agency.
Accommodations can be made for individual work schedules, locations and disabilities.
In February 2013, the Las Vegas Justice Court (LVJC) began to require all LVJC offenders to coordinate the
completion of their community service through HELP. This means more people will be coming to HELP’s CAS
program to receive assignments for their community service hours. Here at HELP, we have added additional
staff for the CAS team and added registration workstations to accommodate the increase in clients. A future goal
is to have a HELP representative present in the Regional Justice Center to register clients immediately after
sentencing.
For additional information or to register your agency as a CAS site, please contact Samuel Wesley, CAS
Manager, (702) 369-4357 x1243 or [email protected].
YOUTH CENTER RELOCATION UPDATE
We are excited to bring you an update on the
relocation of the Shannon West Homeless Youth
Center.
HELP has received two major gifts for this project -
$1 million from The Engelstad Family Foundation and
$2.5 million from the US Department of Housing and
Urban Development administered by the Clark
County Board of Commissioners Community
Development Advisory Committee.
We are actively seeking an appropriate commercial
property, ideally a former hotel, for this purpose.

JONATHAN’S STORY
Jonathan grew up in a household where drug use
and drinking were accepted and began using
drugs at age 16. After an arrest for possession of
stolen merchandise, Jonathan was put on
probation. A second arrest after a family argument
due to excessive drinking violated his probation
and he spent two months in jail. Following his
release, Jonathan was referred to the Shannon
West Homeless Youth Center. He was assigned a
case manager and began to attend support
meetings. Jonathan worked diligently on treatment
assignments and found full time employment. He
was able to save $2,000 and moved into his own
apartment when he was discharged from the youth
center. He continues to work on maintaining a
recovery-orientated life style.
MOLLY’S STORY
Molly is a single mother of one child who contacted
Nevada 2-1-1 and was referred to HELP of
Southern Nevada for rent and utility assistance.
She faced a triple challenge: loss of income due to
breast cancer treatments; eviction proceedings;
and a custody battle for her child. HELP was able
to prevent Molly and her daughter from becoming
homeless by providing rental and utility assistance;
and also transportation and counseling assistance.
KENDRA’S STORY
Kendra has been caring for her grandson since he
was a young boy. Due to a medical condition, her
income was only $300 a month and she and her
grandson needed somewhere to live after staying
with friends. After Kendra came to HELP, she and
her grandson were housed in a two bedroom
apartment. Kendra received case management,
counseling and help with budgeting. Several
months later, with HELP’s assistance, Kendra was
granted Social Security Disability benefits. Kendra
is now able to maintain the household on her own.

For some, success means a new job,
a promotion, purchasing a new car or
moving to a new home.
For others, success has a different meaning.
Here are personal success stories of

“For example, Darrian Stillwagon, an outstanding
young man and a senior at Ed W. Clark High
School, attended our "Reclaim your Future"
breakfast hosted by MGM Resorts International last
week. Darrian struggled in school not due to ability,
but poor attendance. Graduation advocate Tish
Carrol saw something in Darrian and did not give up
on him. She made sure he got to school every day
and helped him get his grades up. Darrian will
graduate this year and will attend college. Please
see the picture of Darrian . . . He wants to own a
business one day.”
OUR WIA GRADUATES CELELBRATE THEIR SUCCESS
This year, HELP enrolled 622 youth in our Workforce
Investment Act youth program - 461 high school seniors
enrolled at seven Southern Nevada high schools, and 161
at-risk and homeless youth directly enrolled here at
HELP’s main campus.
These youth took part in educational planning, leadership
development and life skills support programming. All
participants had 1-on-1 meetings with their Case
Managers. Students gained practical experience during
160 hour work readiness assignments.
All of these activities provided a positive support system
that removed barriers to obtaining high school diplomas,
GED certificates, certified vocational training or post-
secondary education opportunities.
We are very proud of our 292 WIA participants who
graduated or earned their GED Certificates. Participants
have also found employment or will enter the military after
high school.
One example of success is Darrian Stillwagon, a WIA
program participant at Clark High School. District
Superintendent Pat Skorkowsky recognized Darrian by
name in a letter to CCSD employees on June 6, the last
day of school. Congratulations to Darrian for persevering
through your senior year and graduating with your class.
