After the death of Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan, in 1466, his son Ludovico il Moro asked Leonardo da Vinci to create the largest equestrian statue in the world, in memory of his father. The commission was paid in advance by the court treasury superintendent, and Leonardo’s workshop, which was located where the Palazzo Reale now stands, was supplied with all the tools and materials needed for the fusion of the sketches.Leonardo immediately understood the great expecta-tion that the Sforza family was placing on that statue and, as usual, he undertook a long course of study to produce the best result. For this reason, in 1482, he sketched a monument that would eclipse all the previous equestrian stat-ues, in particular the one of Colleoni (in Venice), cre-ated by Verrocchio who had been his teacher, and the one of Gattamelata (in Padua), created by the famous Donatello. In reality, Leonardo’s attention was more focused on the horse than the rider. The horse was supposed to be huge and in the rampant position, in the act of breaking down the enemy. With this in mind, he thoroughly studied the horses’ anatomy in the ducal stables, and filled sheets with drawings of steeds fa-mous for their beauty.Among Leonardo’s sketches there are notes such as: “Morel Fiorentino is big and has a strong neck and very nice head”, or “Ronzone has beautiful thighs ...” He was looking to assemble parts of different horses in order to shape the perfect one into a work of art.Soon, however, Leonardo realized that the project had to be rethought, since a colossal ramping horse four times larger than life would face big statics prob-lems.Unfortunately, his studies were slowed down in 1491 by the policy of marriages followed by the duke, who involved him in the preparation of two lavish wed-dings celebrated in the nearby city of Pavia, and fol-lowed by a period of festivities in Milan: Ludovico il Moro married Beatrice d’Este on 17th January, and Anna Maria Sforza married Alfonso I d’Este five days later, on 23rd January. The guests were the noble relatives of the most prominent European families. The two ceremonies were followed by huge celebra-tions including a three-day tournament, from 26 to 28 January, for which Leonardo had to design some costumes. When he was finally free to resume the project, Leonardo envisioned a horse moving, with a raised leg, and produced the final model in time to be exhib-ited during the celebrations of yet another wedding, the one held in Milan on 16th March 1494, between Bianca Maria Sforza and the emperor of Austria, Maximilian I of Habsburg. The artwork received huge praise for its beauty, and was now ready for the wax casting with 100 tons (220,500 pounds) of bronze!
Nobody had ever taken on such a chal-lenge before. But at this point war upset all the plans. The king of France Charles VIII, looking to inherit the kingdom of Naples, made a deal with Milan, Venice, Florence and the Papal State so that they would let him reach Southern Italy unhindered. He arrived on 3rd September 1494, and Naples was effectively occupied on February the 22nd.But the many raids of the French pushed the Italians to form an anti-French league supported by Spain and Emperor Maximilian too.Naples was liberated and Carlo returned home, but he was succeeded by his com-bative cousin Louis XII, who claimed for himself the Duchy of Milan as the neph-ew of Valentina Visconti, the family de-throned by the Sforza.Given the danger and having lost his allies in defending Milan, Ludovico used the bronze set aside for the horse to forge cannons, to no avail. In 1500 Louis XII eventually had the upper hand and conquered Milan.Leonardo had to flee and was forced to leave the huge clay model behind, in the Castello Sforzesco courtyard, where the French crossbowmen hit it and destroyed it completely. This sad story has an incredible happy ending, though. In 1977, Charles Dent, an American pilot, politician, art collector and sculpture lover, decided to bring Leonardo’s dream to life and to donate a bronze horse to the city of Milan. He was especially grateful to this city for hosting and supporting the Renaissance.Dent searched for the original sketches in several museums and assembled a scientific committee of Leonardo’s experts in order to complete the missing parts.Dent then established the “Leonardo da Vinci’s Horse Foundation” (Ldvhf) and started a fundraising cam-paign which raised almost 2.5 million dollars in 15 years. Unfortunately, he could not see his dream come true, because he died in 1994, before the horse was completed. The project was taken over by Frederik Meijer, own-er of a supermarket chain, who offered to complete Dent’s project, provided that two copies of the horse would be produced: one for Milan and one for his own
“Meijer Gardens”, a nature park in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where Meijer collects outdoors copies of the most famous statues. The direction of the works was entrusted to the sculp-tor Nina Akamu, who finally took over the endeavour. The Ldvhf attached the condition that the horse would be exposed in a place with adequate security, and that is how the beautiful gallop racecourse of San Siro was chosen. The seven parts of the horse arrived in Milan in 1999, where they were welded together. In September, during a solemn ceremony, the statue was placed on its marble base about two metres high, with plaques describing the Ldvhf story and the names of those who participated in the fundraising. The second copy, known as “The Grand Horse” is now on show in the Meijer Gardens and is the highlight of the exhibition, which attracts over half a million visi-tors each year. Finally, a 2.5 meters (8,2 feet) replica was donat-ed in 2001 to the city of Vinci where Leonardo was born, and it is now located in Piazza della Libertà. Since 2001 Leonardo’s Horse is also the symbol of the “Milan International Film Festival” Awards. Some data: height: 7.30 metres (24 feet) weight: 10 tons (2204,62 pounds) approximatelyMost of the horse drawings now belong to Queen Elizabeth II, and are kept in Windsor Castle.

• Lombardy lakesLago di Como The famous lakeside city is just an hour from Milan by train, and so it is an attractive pos-sibility for a day’s ex-cursion. The service “A Friend in Milan” will take you there by car or by train. If you want to do it yourself, take a train from the Stazione Nord station, in Piazza Cadorna, to Como Lago, a station positioned right on the lakeside www.lenord.it. From here, ferries and hydrofoils will take you all over the lake, and a bus to Bellagio of-fers a cheap and picturesque alternative to boat transport. Info from the Como tourist office, tel. 031.3300.128, www.lakecomo.com, [email protected]. Ferry info www.navigazi-onelaghi.it
Lago MaggioreIt is the second largest lake in It-aly, extended for about 65 kilome-tres (40 miles). The climate is mild both in sum-mer and winter, producing Medi-terranean vege-tation, with many gardens growing
rare and exotic plants. Well-known gardens include those of the Borromean and Brissago Islands, the Villa Taranto in Verbania, and the Alpinia botanical garden above Stresa. “A Friend in Milan” will take you there by car or by train. If you want to do it yourself, take a train from the Stazi-one Stazione Centrale or Stazione Porta Garibaldi to Stresa www.lenord.it. From here, ferries and hydrofoils will take you all over the lake. http://http://www.navigazionelaghi.it/eng/index.asp
• Driving, parkingWhenever you leave your car unattended, make sure that there are no bags, cameras, wallets etc. in sight inside. To enter the city centre (the area within the socalled “Cerchia dei Bastioni”, a circular area which, to give you an idea, starts from Porta Venezia on one side, Piazza XXIV Maggio on the other), you have to pay a tariff in the Area C system, about €5 per entrance. The Area C system operates Mon-Fri, 7.30-19.30. For further information, click on the Area C banner on the website www.comune.milano.it. Petrol stations in the city close for lunch, Saturday after-noons and Sunday. There are a few self-service pumps in the city. Motorway service stations are open 24 hrs a day. To park in the streetside areas marked by blue lines, you need to buy a SostaMilano card, on sale at the “ATM Point” in the Duomo metro station (open Mon-Sat 7.45-20.15), and in Cadorna, Centrale F.S., Loreto and Romolo metro stations, as well as in many bars and tobacconists. The cards are also sold directly by the attendants near the parking areas (they have uniforms and ID cards). You mark the start of stay on the card by scratching the year, month, day, and time. Various privately-run carparks also exist (blue P sign). If you are driving into Milan, you can use the multistorey car parks at the Metro stations Cascina Gobba, Famagosta, Bisceglie, Molino Dorino and Lampugnano, open 6.00-01.00, the cheapest parking in the city. Don’t leave your car in areas marked by the tow-away symbol, or in areas marked by yellow lines (areas reserved for residents). If your car should be clamped or towed away, you will have to contact the Polizia Locale (traffic wardens), whose offices are in Piazza Beccaria 19 (MM1/3 Duomo), tel. 02.02.08. Keep dipped headlights on during the daytime.
• European Emergency Tel. Number 112. In case of stolen goods or documents, you will need to con-tact the police station, Questura, in Via Fatebenefratelli 11 (M3 Turati), tel. 02.62.261.
• Guided toursPersonalized tours are offered by “A Friend in Milan” (see space last page) or www.friendinmilan.co.uk. “Autostradale” runs a three-hour coach tour every day ex-cept Mondays, starting at 9.30, in Piazza Duomo (in front of the Cathedral). It includes a visit to the Last Supper, and to the most important monuments. Cost €55 per person. Info at www.autostradale.it. “Zani Viaggi” runs a coach sightseeing. Info from their office in Foro Bonaparte 76, tel. 02.867.131, www.zaniviaggi.it. The “Centro Guide” provides official guides for tours for up to 25 people, in various languages. Tel. 02.8645.0433, or www.centroguidemilano.net. The “Associazione Castelli & Ville” runs excursions to castles and villas in Lombardy, with coach transport, lunch, and tour of the castle or villa (in Italian). Info tel. 02.6558.9231, 347.4830.009. www.castellieville.it

• Public transportATM. Runs metro, buses and trams. Ordinary tickets cost €1.50 and can be obtained in Metro stations (newsagents, automatic machines, ticket offices in some stations), and from bars displaying the green and orange ATM sticker on the window. Weekly, monthly or yearly season tickets are available. ATM Infopoint are in Duomo, Cadorna, Centrale, Lo-reto and Romolo Metro stations, open Mon-Sat 7.45-19.00. The ordinary ticket should be franked using the machine as soon as you get on a bus or tram, or go through the Met-ro turnstiles, or before getting on an FNM train. The same ticket can be used for 90 minutes from the time franked on the ticket, with any combination of buses and trams. The magnetic ticket should be franked on every journey. The one-day ticket (abbonamento giornaliero, €4.50) and the two-day ticket (abbonamento bigiornaliero, €8.25) last 24/48 hours respectively from the first franking: frank the magnetic ticket on every journey. The Metro system consists of 5 lines, number 1 (red), 2 (green), 3 (yellow), 5 (lilac) and the “Passante Ferroviario” (S trains). Metro trains run from around 6.15 until 00.30, except on Saturday nights when trains run till about 02.00. During the night there is a replacement bus service for parts of lines 1 and 3. There are large interchange car parks at the stations Lampugnano, Bisceglie (M1), Cascina Gobba, Famagosta (M2), open 7.00-01.00 (overnight parking possible). To get to the Rho Fiera trade fair district during fairs you can buy a return ticket at €5 (Andata/ritorno Rho Fiera) or a day ticket (Giornaliero fiera) €7. The normal one or two day ticket is not valid for getting to Rho Fiera. For public transport info, toll-free info at 800.808181 (7.30-19.30), www.atm-mi.it. Radiobus service, operating from 20.00 to 02.00, is like a collective taxi service. A very comfortable air-conditioned minicoach picks you up and takes you where you want to go. You have to book by phone at 02.4803.4803, prefer-ably well in advance – say a few hours – or even just before your trip, but in this case you run the risk of not getting a place as well as spending ages listening to a recorded message. Cost €4 if you pay on the bus, less if you buy the ticket (ordinary ATM ticket + Radiobus ticket, total €3.50) in advance. This service may seem complicated, but it is so convenient and comfortable that it’s well worth the effort.
• RailwaysFS (Ferrovie dello Stato). Train information can be obtained from the information of-fice at the Central Station (Stazione Centrale), or by phone, 892021, or best of all by Internet (www. trenitalia.com). Remember that open date train tickets should be franked using the yellow machines situated at the near end of the platforms, just before boarding the train. A return ticket should be franked again before the return journey. If you forget, you will be fined! If you do forget, try the option to write date and time of your journey in a corner of the ticket, using a pen. If you booked a seat, on your ticket the date is already printed, so it is not necessery to franke it.For many trains, seat booking is obligatory. In any case it is a good idea to buy your ticket early (at least the day before) and book your seat (small extra charge). Saves frustration queuing while your train is about to depart. Be sure to claim your booked seat within ten minutes after departure. For the differently abled and people with sight problems, there is a phone number for the whole of Italy: 199.30.30.60, operating every day, 7.00-21.00.
FNM (Ferrovie Nord) Is the privately-run train service running from Stazione Nord in Piazza Cadorna. An info office is in the Cadorna sta-tion, open 7.00 to 20.00 every day. www.lenord.it Ferrovie Nord trains leave from Cadorna and run to various locations north of Milan, including the lakes and Malpensa airport. See www.lenord.it
• Safety and securityIn Milan, like most large cities, there is a problem of small time theft. Take care of personal possessions at all times! Don’t leave your bags unattended even for a moment, particularly in crowded locations like Piazza Duomo and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. Also take care in and around the Central Station, and when on trams and metro dur-ing the rush hour. If, at the station or airport, someone approaches you and offers you a taxi, this is not the nor-mal taxi and it will cost much more. This is happening particularly at Linate airport, the taxi turns out to be a chauffeur-driven car with a bill to match. Beware of buying fake merchandise on the street, it will be low quality and it’s also against the law. People selling roses in restaurants have nothing to do with the restaurant, just say no (unless you want one, of course!). If you give money to the many beggars in the city and on the Metro trains you are financ-ing organized crime.
• TaxisIt is almost impossible to stop a taxi on the street in Milan: you have to locate one of the taxi-ranks (see map pages), or call one of the radio taxi firms (02.4040, 02.8585, 02.4000, 02.6969). A few taxis accept credit cards. If in doubt about price, ask the driver for an estimate before setting off. On-line estimates at www.milanotaxi.it
• TelephonesThe 02 dialling code for Milan is incorporated into phone numbers. If you are calling Italy from abroad, you have to include the “0” of this prefix, ie +39.02.(number). Num-bers starting 339, 347, 348 etc. are for mobile phones, these calls cost more. Numbers starting with 0 are for fixed phones, 1 for public utilities (police etc.), 3 for mobiles, 8 for toll-free numbers.
• Ticket infoTeatro alla Scala In Duomo metro station, open every day 12.00-18.00 (closed public holidays and August). Payment cash or by credit card. For information on availability, phone the Scala Infotel Service, tel. 02.7200.3744, from 9.00 to 18.00, eve-ry day. Through this persona, Mullican improvises actions whose nature and duration are unpredictable, moving within a marked-off area that contains a number of everyday objects. Hypnosis is a practice that the artist has used since the 1970s as a tool for exploring the inner psychological self, and probing the aesthetic, existential stance of the artist.
