Heathfield’s Got Talent
Notices
We are perhaps getting uncomfortably used to hearing about
terrible incidents around the world, but the recent atrocity per-
petrated in Manchester struck a particular chord in our commu-
nity. There were two main reasons: firstly, because the victims
were mostly children and young people; secondly, because the
venue is one which we have probably all visited—sometimes in a
School group. This was, literally and metaphorically, very close
to home. The reaction of people in the City of Manchester, and
across the world, brought to mind, in turn, two of the mainstays
by which Heathfield operates. The fact that practical help and
support was offered, rather than recriminations, made me think
of our motto: ‘Deeds Not Words’. The ways in which so many
people were moved to help in any way they could—offering lifts,
opening their homes, distributing water—reminded me of the
ideals we try to set for ourselves in the Heathfield prayer:
I am only one,
But I am one.
I cannot do everything,
But I can do something.
What I can do,
I ought to do.
What I ought to do,
By the grace of God, I will do.
It is always amazing to be able to listen to live music in the
assemblies—and last week we had a double treat: Jean
played a couple of brilliant guitar pieces, and Year 3 played
as an ensemble to provide a soundscape for a poem by Rob-
ert Louis Stevenson, The Counterpane.
Two Musicians

In Year 1, a debate over items in a timeline….
Year 5 creative writing in

One of our longest-established community links, and one that makes us very
proud, is with Bent’s Farm Nursery. Our Year 4 children set up and run activities
for the children in our Nursery, and those from Bent’s Farm Nursery.
All the activities have to be tested out,
of course…
Throwing, running, catching, space
-hopping...looks like a lot of fun!
I can’t wait to meet up
with Year 2— but I hear
they have had a long and
winding road to get here!
Don’t worry—they come
form Heathfield so they
don’t need anybody’s help
in any way!
I’m sure that you can think of a few more Beatles-related comments!
There was a

Lots of steps to

Two, that is!
Last Friday we enjoyed a coffee morning after the Awards Assembly, this one
specifically for parents of children in Year 1. There were so many wonderful
awards to give out, and so much to celebrate—so huge thanks to all the par-
ents who kindly came to share the morning with us.

If you have not heard, Connie and Alfie are taking part in a mini and junior run on the weekend for Great Ormond Street Hospital. They are running to help a friend raise £15000 which she pledged to the hospi-tal, as it treats her 8 year old daughter regularly for Sturge Webers Syndrome. You can read more about Annie on the link. If you would like to donate, there is a link below. Any donations welcome!

In training!
Not sure that is what was meant by
a ‘rest’ in this context, girls!
So, are you enjoying the HF
LEGO Club?
It’s what you make of it…..!
Netball Action!
Our Year 6 Netball team swung into action on Wednes-
day, taking part in a tournament against teams from a
number of local schools. We got all the way to the finals,
but eventually got beaten by a strong team from St.
John’s
Well done to the HF boys and girls who represented us
so brilliantly!
Mrs Hutchinson ran an assembly this week on Road Safety, following on from the visits paid by the Cald-
erdale team. Children—and adults—were reminded about some of the safety lessons: the Green Cross
Code; how to use pelican crossings; the importance of wearing a seat belt—and how to cross the road. All
vitally important lessons. The assembly finished off with an inter-House Quiz.
As if we needed more evidence that spring is in the air, there is wildlife appearing all over the School (I won’t even
bother making any of the obvious jokes about that). In Year 3, the tadpoles have become tiny frogs—and in the
Foundation stage, the chicks are growing fast! Meanwhile, up on the tops, Miss James led an expedition to visit a
newly arrived foal!
The inter-House Swimming Gala was held last Wednesday, and what an exciting, close-run event it was! There
were some fine individual performances, and some inspiring team-spirit on show. In the end, though, one House
deserved their win, with consistently strong performances, in all age groups.
Our tag rugby team performed brilliantly in the regional heats of the recent tournament, getting through to the finals,
which will be held next month on Thursday 22nd June , from 9.30am – 12.00pm at the Old Rishworthian’s Rugby Club, Cop-
ley. The team pose above and Captain Jake gives a report below.

On Tuesday the 23rd May the Year 5 and 6 rugby team consisting of Eve, Lisa ,
Jack, Josh, Dan, Jamie, Tyler, Joey , Christan, Toby, Mylo and myself travelled to
Old Rishworthians RUFC to compete in the Calderdale Tag Rugby Festival. We
had to play against LinBob ‘A’ in our first game. We won the game comfortably
with some good tries from Tyler and some excellent passing from all. In our next
game we faced Accrington and played some good rugby with Dan linking the play
well and the team defending well. Our confidence was now high as we went to
play LinBob B. Jamie was in good form tagging loads of the opposition whilst Eve
made a fantastic run which resulted in a disallowed try for diving – harsh from
the Rishworth refs! Our fourth and final game against Old Town resulted in our
first loss of the day and as we tired we lost some of our shape. A big thank you to
Mr Anderson – like the England rugby team we have an Aussie coach – unlike
them we have qualified for the next round of a tournament! Thanks also to Ms
Higgins and the parents for their support and congratulations to Tyler who was
my man of the match although I thought all the team were superb.
Captain of Rugby: Jake Thomas.
There was great excitement as the day of the Talent Show dawned, and all the hope-
fuls prepared to show their acts to the judges—and how lucky we were to be able to
acquire the services of three wonderful panellists—surely they were not really David
Walliams, Amanda Holden and Simon Cowell?
We were treated to a diverse range of talent on the night: the Drum Dudes of Year 1;
Mia on violin; Joseph, Lewi and Jean playing guitar; Phil as Mr Magic blew our minds
with uncanny prestidigitation; Eva and Dawn displayed amazing dance talent in their
set; Pragya sang beautifully; there was a Year 4 Boy Band; Mae and Lil-Mae showed us
how dancing is done in the Emerald Isle; Ananyaa sang most sweetly—in Chinese!;
Ava and Grace were tapping cow-girls; Eve danced with Daisy and India and then
played and sang a ‘lava-ley’ song about a lonely volcano; Dan hit exactly the right note
with his xylophone recital; Cara and Amelia sang a superb duet; an A-Team of Year 5
talent taught the judges a thing or two about street dancing; Isobel gave a masterclass
in tap dancing; and Mylo finished it all off with a rocking drum set.
It was a really fun evening—huge thanks to the PTA for organising refreshments, to
Mrs Bradley for running the event and to Mr Baker, who managed to be two people at
once in the form of both Ant and Dec!
Are there any members of the Heathfield community who have ex-
perience in running adult courses in Reiki, Yoga, Pilates or any oth-
er form of physical exercise and well-being? If so please get in con-
tact with me at School, either in person or via e-mail. I am exploring
the possibility of running some courses for interested adults, and
want to see if any of our very talented Heathfield family might be
able to help!
Parents and carers will be aware that the Government will be intro-
ducing the possibility of funding for 30 hours of Nursery-age care
(increased from the current 15 hours). Whilst we will continue to
accept funding for 15 hours, there are no plans at present to in-
crease that provision for children at Heathfield Nursery to 30
hours.
The situation regarding acceptance of funding is open to review,
and any changes would be notified to current parents with as much
warning as possible.
