The Early Years of Career Education
• Recruitment Strategies
• List of Programs
• Flying Wedge…program philosophy
Recruitment Strategies - Career Awareness Programs
• Initiated in 2001 as a response to changing workforce demographics and research into perceptions by area students of Mayo as a career option
• Imperative to commit resources to assist students with career exploration to help assure adequate supply of qualified health care professionals in the future
• Emphasis on education and industry partnerships to promote career exploration/confirmation by students
• Supported by leadership as long term investment essential to future recruitment success
Career Awareness Program Design
• Offer range of program experiences from 6th grade through early college
• Programs for younger students focus on developing awareness of career options, emphasizing study habits and stimulating interest in science and math classes
• Programs for grades 10-12 focus on above as well as affirming choice of planned major in college or career
• Students required to do some prep work to qualify to participate in programs to assure a focused audience – has been well received by teachers, parents and students

An Education Partnership is Born…
•“A Cup of Coffee”
•Building a Partnership/Examples
A Cup of Coffee…Shared Focus• Regular Meetings for Relationship/Career Education
Development• Everyone tends to bring an agenda…• We had to trust each other… • Shared Focus: Students
– Mayo’s mission: The Needs of the Patient Comes First– ”The Needs of the Students Comes First”
• Our Resources:– Teachers– Mayo Clinic employees and medical knowledge
Building a Partnerships• Why?
– Foundations for success: multiply resources
– Favorable environment for continuous improvement: different views
– Specialization of skills: expertise of each partner
• BECAUSE WE COULD NOT DO THIS ALONE
Building Partnerships• Signs of an effective partnership:
– School and business representatives know each other on a first name basis
– Regular communication; open and respectful– Members of the partnership ask each other to serve
on committees– School administration solicit input from business
partners before major decisions– Business members are active in the school– Each partner believes it receives as much as it
gives
Previous Examples of Partnerships Developed

Health Sciences Career Center: The Rationale
• Rochester Public Schools career awareness class annually at risk at budget time
• Very popular class and considered essential to make local students aware of health care careers in general and promote Mayo as employer of choice
• Opportunity to expand program from a weekly two hour class to a half day curriculum including science and math classes
• Broaden focus from Nursing Assistant training to full spectrum of allied health care career fields
Health Science Careers Center (HSCC)• Partners: Rochester Public Schools, Rochester
Community and Technical College, and Mayo Clinic• Objective: To maximize community resources that will
allow the medical careers program to expand to meet the needs of the students and the growing demand for medical professionals
• Focus: “What is best for the students”; all partners have used this as the “lighthouse” knowing that their individual benefits will surface in the end
• Mayo Benefits: developing relationships with local and diverse students (future applicants), better prepared students for post-secondary (careers available and requirements), and community relations
Rochester Public Schools• 15 elementary schools, 4 middle schools and
3 high schools serving 16,000+ students• # of employees…2,148• Advanced Placement courses, Honors
