Promoting Airport Excellence—One Student at a Time:
ACI’s Global Training and DNA Assistance Programme
By Kevin Caron, Head, Global Training and Developing Nations Airport
Assistance Programme
As we say goodbye to 2016, I wish to take the time to review the many accomplish-
ments we have achieved over the past twelve months. 2016 was a special year for
ACI Global Training (GT) and the Developing Nations Airport (DNA) Assistance Pro-
gramme by surpassing the 150th mark for number of courses delivered.
This highlights our continued commitment to the airport community to educate the cur-
rent and next generation of airport professionals and the importance of enabling the
never-ending pursuit of knowledge in our dynamic industry. Our continued commit-
ment drives our dedicated and knowledgeable faculty to deliver education to passion-
ate airport professionals in a way that is essential to achieving that aim.

I am also proud of the evolution of the DNA programme as a provider of capacity
building and as an allocator of best practices for our members from developing na-
tions.
Through the programme we were able to provide 150 online and 14 classroom schol-
arships. Another highlight is the GT Accredited Training Institutes (ATI) programme
which continues to thrive with two accredited courses approved and four other cours-
es under evaluation.
To sum up, 2016 was a year filled with the following achievements:
154 classroom courses and 23,800 online learning centre hours;
2,920 classroom students and 2,600 online students;
17 DNA/ACI Fund Seminars offered to 411 students from 51 countries;
28 ACI-Concordia University Airport Executive Leadership Programme (AELP)
graduates;
116 ACI-ICAO Global AMPAP International Airport Professionals and two Associ-
ate graduates;
61 Global Safety Network Initial graduates;
13 Global Safety Network Advanced graduates;
189 Airport Operations Diploma Programme graduates; and
APEX in Safety Assessor Training Programme pilot course.
In closing, I would like to acknowledge everyone who made this year the great suc-
cess it was. Thank you to our students for turning to ACI Global Training for their train-
ing needs, the ACI training centre managers and their staff, our colleagues at ICAO
Global Aviation Training (Meshesha Belayneh and his team), ACI’s professional facul-
ty, the GT Steering Group (Danielle, Deidre, Francisco, Nancy, Natalie, Vincent, Ya-
cine and Yulia) for their strategic guidance and of course, our dedicated team of man-
agers and administrators, Amanda, Eddie, Issa, John, Kimberly, Melisa, Mona and
Wenyan.

Airport Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM) in Istanbul By Issa Castro, Manager, Global Training
ACI Global Training concluded the year with the delivery of the Airport Collaborative
Decision Making (A-CDM) training last 12 – 16 December 2016 in the beautiful, histor-
ic city of Istanbul, Turkey.
Held at the TAV Aviation Academy at the Istanbul International Airport, the training was
delivered over five days to a small but mighty group of five participants from Australia,
Turkey and Sweden.
The A-CDM course analyses the importance of the relationships between airport oper-
ators, airlines, ground handlers and air traffic controllers working together to improve
decision making, thereby reducing delays and enhancing efficiency. The focus of A-
CDM is for all airport partners to share information, so that each organization has a
more complete operational picture, enabling the effective and timely resolution of is-
sues.

A-CDM in Istanbul (continued) For the practical application of lessons learned, workshops and discussions were
adapted to whiteboard exercises/debate rather than group work and presentations to
accommodate the size of the class, an approach that was well-received.
ACI instructor Mr. Ian Barrie was pleased to share the following comments:
“Everybody agreed that they are learning a great deal about how A-CDM can be
adopted not just at existing airports, but also may be incorporated into new-build air-
ports, including the new Istanbul airport currently under construction. There was
much interest in that.”
Mr. Barrie also observed that “amongst other things, the course is allowing partici-
pants to develop their thinking on procedures and project implementation and how
best to manage them.”
In addition, “Having two delegates in attendance from a company which provides tech-
nical support products to airports is useful because their ideas on the integration of
data in the CDM environment are very innovative,” he concluded.
We would like to extend our gratitude to both Mr. Candemir Akyıldız, Managing Direc-
tor and Mr. Ibrahim İpekçi, Business Development and Programme Manager of TAV
Aviation Minds for their continued support and for making ACI training a vital part of
their training offerings.

Online Learning Centre-Reflections on 2016
By Eddie Ragauskas, Senior Manager, ACI Online Learning Centre
What a great year it’s been for the Online Learning Centre (OLC), airports and online training.
In 2016 the OLC delivered almost 24,000 hours of training to 2,600 participants from over 276 customers around the world.
We would like to extend a big thank you to all our customers and special thanks to all our key airport partners who worked with us to deliver programs including Aéroports de Montreal, Airports Company South Africa, Airports of Thailand, Brussels Airport Company, Dublin Airport Authority, Norman Manley International Airport and Queens-land Airports Limited.
The Airport Operations Diploma Programme continues to be our most popular airport professional development program with 248 people enrolled and 189 graduates.
Other key milestones included the delivery of the Airports Operations Diploma Pro-gramme in Spanish and the Certificate in Airside Safety in French and Spanish.
As the use of technology to meet various training requirements rapidly increases around the world in the coming years we see a bright future for all forms of online training, learning and professional development in 2017 and beyond.
Happy New Year!
