HAPPYHOLIDAYSFROMTHEACADEMICSDEPARTMENT:Werecentlyfinishedoursecondgradingperiodandarenowalmostthreeweeksintoourthirdgradingperiod.

TheClassof2018ledthewayagainduringgradingperiodtwowith76%ofseniorsoneithertheDean’sListorHonorRoll.Awesomejobseniors!

Whenwereturnfrombreak,theCadetswillhavethreemoreweeksofclasstoreviewandprepareforsemesteronefinals(Jan22-26).

ManyclassesarenowutilizingourbrandnewChromebooksintheclassroomtohelpexpandtheirdigitallearningandknowledge.

GoogleClassroom,GoogleDrive,Kahootandavarietyofothertechnologytoolsarebeingimplementeddailyinourboy-friendlyclassroomsandwillserveasagreatlearningtoolforbothcollegeandcareerpreparation.

RecentlyvariousgroupsofCadetsvisitedUSD,SDSU,andUCSDcampusestotakeatourandspeaktocurrentstudentsaswellasAcademyalumniaboutthecollegeexperience.

AllESOLclasseshadawonderfulopportunitytoparticipateinaninternationaluniversitytourofUCSDtovisitthecampusandspeaktoadmissioncounselorsspecificallyforinternationalstudents.ThisfieldtripwasavaluableexperienceasthestudentslearnedabouttheuniversitysystemintheUnitedStatesandhadtheopportunitytospeakwiththeANAalumniandaskquestionsabouttheirexperiencesatUCSD.

Dr.CowenandMr.SegoviaalsotookafieldtriptotheresearchlabsatUCSD,whereCadetswereabletospeaktotopresearchscientistsandgraduatestudentsaboutavarietyofresearchtopics.

Mattison’s30-plusyearsofsurfingcompetitionandcoachingincludeswinningthenationalsurfingchampionshipin2003aswellasfiveEastCoastChampionshipsinearlieryears.HelaterwastheassistantcoachfortheUSASurfTeamin2009whenitwonaGoldMedalintheInternationalSurfingAssociationWorldChampionships.

Asurfboarddesignspecialistaswell,Mattisonwasdubbed“LordoftheBoards”bySurfingMagazine.

AttheAcademy,MattisonwillcoachtheWarriorSurfTeaminScholasticSurfSeriesDivision5events.

TheAcademy’soceanfrontcampushasmadesurfingoneoftheschool’smostpopularwintersports.“Sean’sexperienceasachampioncompetitor,coach,andsurfboarddesignergivesourCadetathletesspecialaccesstoworld-classtraininginthissport,”ByrdMilic(AthleticDirector)said.

ALUMNUSMAKESUSPROUD!ThisNovember,oneofourgraduatesfromtheClassof2017,RichardPolanco,playedinatournamentwithhiscollegeteam,EasternWashingtonUniversity,atUNLV.SomeofourANAfamilywereabletotravelouttoseehimplayandspendtimegettingtoknowhiscoachesandhisnewteam.CoachJohnMaffucci,JanetPullen,CoachBobbyHugginsandhisfamily,CoachRafaelRodriguezandhiswifeLeslie,SarahOrtiz,andtwocurrentCadets,JCCanahuateandAlbertPichardo,wereallabletovisitandwatchRichardinaction.Heplayedseveralgamesoverthespanoftheweekandwasabletoshowsuccessasaplayer.AsanANAalumnus,hehascontinuedhisloveofbasketballandpursueshiscollegeandcareergoals.WeareWarriorProudofthisAlumnus!

WINTERBREAKWearequicklyapproachingtheWinterBreak.PleasecommunicateyourCadet’stravelplanswithhisTACofficerandthetransportationdepartmentifyouhavenotalreadydoneso.WehavetransportationavailabletotheOceansidetrainstationandtheSanDiegoairportbutweneedtohavetravelitinerariesassoonaspossible.Cadetsarereleasedat12:30pmonDecember15thandarerequiredbackoncampusby8:00pmonJanuary2nd.TherearenoHealthCenterorMessHallservicesoncampusduringthistimeframesonoCadetsareallowedoncampuspriortoJanuary2nd.

WARRIORAVIATIONCOURSEANDCLUBInclosecoordinationwithAcademics,wearemovingforwardwiththeplanningandexecutionoftheWarriorAviationCourse(WACC)nextschoolyear.Theclubisgoingstrongwith25membersandmanyonthewaitinglist.OnSeptember22nd,theWarriorAviationClubattendedmilitarydayattheMiramarAirshow.ItwasahugehittonotonlyseethemilitaryequipmentbutinteractwithmanyofthemilitarypersonnelfromMCASMiramar.WehaveAirandSpaceMuseumandCampPendletonAirStationonouragendaforfuturefieldtrips.TheAcademypurchasedanumberofsmalldronesandafterabrieftutorialbyoneofthemoreexperiencedWACmember,theCadetsenjoyedtestingthemduringtherecentclubday.

CadetstakehomeseventrophiesattheRookiesDrillMeet

ROOKIESDRILLMEETOnDecember2nd,theJROTCDepartmenttookseveralofouryoungmentoKatellaHighSchooltoa“RookiesDrillMeet.”Theyoungmenperformedremarkably.Theyparticipatedinthefollowingevents:UnarmedRegulationDrill,ArmedRegulationDrill,ColorGuard,andIndividualarmedandunarmedTap-Out.Theycompetedagainst14otherschoolsandproudlywalkedawaywithseventrophies!TheywontwoUnitTrophiesandfiveIndividualTrophiesandplacedfirstplaceinArmedRegulationdrillandthirdinColorGuard.

TheRaiderChallenge

*Upcomingcompetition:TheRaiderTeamwillbecompetingintheAMCSUSPhysicalFitnessChallengethe2ndweekofDecemberwithfuturecompetitionsagainstFullertonandSonoraHighSchools.PlanstohostaRaiderMeethereatANAin2018isunderway.

TheRifleTeamjusthadtheirfirstmeetingoftheyearandtheinterestishighwithover25Cadetsinattendance.Competitionwillbetough,inordertochoosethe6to9Cadetsthatwillactuallycompete.CurrentlycompetitionsarescheduledwithFullertonHighSchool,8thBrigadeRiflePostalMatch,and7otherpostalmatchesthroughApril2018.

JPA(JROTCPROGRAMASSESSMENT)Phase1(in-ranksinspectionandtheColorGuard)oftheJPAwasconductedonOctober20thwiththephase2(briefingsandinterviews)onNovember6th.Asyoucantellbytheresultsbrokendownbycategory,theCadetsdidexceptionallywell.
