Lots of friends just hook up instead of looking for a boyfriend or girlfriend. M, 17

Dating is casually going out with someone without the commitment to each other. You are free to see other people. F, 16

Dating is much more casual these days. No one really wants to settle down or get married. It seems like everyone is just looking for fast fixes these days. F, 18

This is really funny, because teen these days do this thing that I find to be frankly hilarious. It's called "talking." It's basically where you hook up with somebody you like, or you are texting them or whatever, but never officially dating. So basically, you can make out with this person, but you aren't dating. Nope. You are still single. I don't get it. F, 16
“
”It is really casual. Usually a bunch of people together. No strings attached. M, 17

You can always have contact with the person 24 hours a day as long as you have access to a computer, phone or iPod. F, 14

Talking a lot through Skype or Facebook. Text messaging each other. I think we have a lot more contact with each other. M, 15

For my parents, if you wanted to go on a date, the guy would call the girl’s house and have to talk to her father. Then he would have to ask her to go on a date. This didn't mean that they were a couple though, it ONLY meant that they had gone out together. Now a guy or girl can just text somebody that they like and say "Hey, wanna go out?" and BOOM they're boyfriend and girlfriend. No talking to the dad, no first date to feel out the relationship, TALKING isn't even necessary. Online dating is even becoming a trend. It's so very different. F, 16

It's so dramatic and then the whole Facebook status ... sometimes you're the last to know that your girlfriend dumped you. M, 17

Dating nowadays has different parts, and it can be a good thing. Usually though it is dramatic and confusing ... mainly due to technology and society. F, 16

It definitely changes the relationship. For example, my boyfriend and I have not talked or texted in a while, a couple of days, and it makes you wonder what he is doing. Some people jump to conclusions like cheating or go on social networking things to stalk him, but I am not like that. I restrict myself to not looking and reassure myself that if he wants to hang out, he'll make the effort. But in case you're reading this, dear, just know that if you don't call me tonight I am going to replace you! Basically, technology has fostered a lot of mistrust in relationships. F, 18

Relationships are shorter today than during my parents' time ... kids just hook up every now and then. F, 18

It seems in my parents’ time people went "steady" and hung out with same person forever ... my friends tend to go thru relationships every two weeks. F, 17

Relationships don’t last very long. I give it a couple of weeks and it’s over and they are off on a different relationship, My parents dated for two years and then they were married. M, 18
“”
I think most last only two months or so. Too many distractions going on in their lives. F, 16
