There is an urban legend about a group of famous sci-entists who stopped for lunch at a small-town diner. Seated at the table were six of the greatest thinkers of
our day. Their average IQ was in the 160s.
They noticed that their salt and pepper shakers had been reversed. One with the S on top was filled with pepper. The other with the P on top was filled with salt. So, they concocted an elaborate plan to switch the con-tents without spilling them. It involved a napkin, a straw
and a saucer.
Proud of their solution, they presented it to the waitress. “That is an interesting scheme,” she said. “Of course, we could do this.” Whereupon she simply unscrewed
both shakers and switched the tops.
The Bible asks an important question: “Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?” (1 Corinthians 1:20b). To a Being as wise as our Lord, we must seem like little children to Him. We develop our theories and axioms and syllogisms, but to Him it’s just child’s play. So, the truly wise one is the one who accepts God, and
His Word, by faith.

In Sympathy
It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of
our Sister, Jennifer Odle, who passed away last
Thursday.
She had fought a valiant fight against re-occurring
cancer for the last several years. As of this print-
ing, no details for her service is known. We pray
for Joe, Danny and Joan and for Jennifer’s two
sons and her extended family that they will have
courage and strength in this sorrowful time.

Oscar Wilde said, “Some cause happiness wher-ever they go; others whenever they go.” I’m sure you know what he was talking about. Those folks of whom your best memory involves a door swinging shut as they walk out of it.
Yet, they may not be the most damaging of folks. It’s those that leave yet somehow still remain. People whose caustic words sting even after the sound has died away. The fellow whose bad performance makes everyone question if the job is valid in the first place. A false teach-er whose lies still confuse even after they’ve moved down the road. They leave a stain behind that someone else has to clean up.
You can’t do much about those people but you can make sure you’re not one of them. We have a motto we use at camp, ‘Leave the place a little better than you found it.” It is a good motto for life as well. Instead of going out with a thud, leave on a high note. Make a mark, not a stain. Leave a good taste in their mouth, not an un-pleasant one.
When you go, try to make others better, not bitter.

“How shall the young secure their hearts and guard their lives from sin? Thy Word, the choicest rules impart to keep the conscience clean!”
Where in the world can young people learn what is holy and pure and right? The words of that old song clearly and lovingly convey the solitary truth that Biblical guidance is really the only way that our young people can survive in a world full of wickedness (I John 2:15-17). Even though they may not tell us directly, our young people desire some things of us every single time we see them:
Encouragement – In a world of sarcasm, put-downs, hurt, pain, and rejection, young people secure their hearts through encouragement in doing what is right. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 19:14). Whenever they begin to show characteristics of Christ, encourage them!
Example – Paul said, “Imitate me as I imitate Christ” (I Corinthians 11:1). More than ever, our young people need to see godly men and women standing up and imitating Christ. Parents and grandpar-ents need to be committed to the cause of Christ. Young eyes are watching you and watching where you place your priorities! They need so badly to know that things like courage, character, and integrity are REAL THINGS even though our world portrays them as myth.
Teaching – Christianity is new to them! Teaching can be as simple as pointing out situations that are potentially dangerous and spiritually harmful (and young people face them daily). There are lit-erally millions of opportunities to teach young people each day how to become godly people. Do we, as adults, have the spiritual eyes to see and the courage to teach?
Correction – Where there is no boundary, there is no love (Hebrews 12:7-11). Solomon said, “The rod and rebuke give wisdom, but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother” (Proverbs 29:15). Correcting our children now, and helping them understand right and wrong will keep them (and us) from much heartache and suffering later on in their lives.
Brothers and sisters, love, wisdom, courage, and especially time, are all required of us if we as God’s people wish to secure the hearts of our young people.
