...cannot be solved by increasing capacity. It can only be solved by
offloading capacity.
• current 3G is awful in Japan, getting increasingly more restricted (trafficquotas, ...)
• LTE is good only because it is relative new, same problem when penetration ratiogrows
• WiFi contention is at the level of OLD HUBs -- collision control, MIMO doesnot help much

Contention in LTE/3G
• measured using B-Mobile, OCN,and Biglobe providers
• split into workdays, holidays, andlong holidays (golden week)
• Biglobe is the winner, but only becauseit just came out at the time
• average throghput:300kbps

GroupConnect Delegation Models
1. Paced Model : use a reasonably small group to achieve a targetthroughput◦ for example: 100Mb file in 20s is a good practical target◦ PRO: redundancy -- send same request to 2+ people◦ CON: reliability problem -- target throughput is difficult to achieve
2. Greedy Model : grab as many people around you as you can◦ flexible level of redundancy◦ resilient for out-of-range problem
