Just like green roofs, plant walls are perfect for introducing more greenery
into urban areas.
not much space is required to turn a few square metres into gardens.
Reducing the urban heat island effect, increased biodiversity, better
insulation properties of buildings: these are terms that pop up everywhere
nowadays, usually in combination with plant walls.

In Helsingborg, Greenworks has built two of the first Scandinavian public
vertical outdoor gardens. on a curved wall 3800 grasses, perennials and
ferns have been planted. the result has been over expectations.
Vertical gardens reduce the heat in the city and increase the humidity and
biodiversity. when we densify the cities, vertical gardens are a way to create
balance by bringing in more green environments. Green roofs with sedum
have seen an increasing number of applications in different environments,
but green walls are more advanced and more unusual. the idea of dressing
the walls with plants existed since the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and now,
with the help of modern technology, we can also do it in Sweden.
the vertical garden is mounted on the water reservoire’s curved facade. an
air gap and a waterproof layer separates the plants from the concrete wall.
the garden consists of a modular system of gray cartridges with pre-made
holes for the plants. each module has a waterproof backing that protects
the wall.
the technique is called hydroponics - the plants are not planted in soil but in
felt and get their nutrients dissolved in water.
the green wall increases biodiversity since 20 species are used in the wall of
which most are evergreen perennials.
these include emerald Gaiety, Bergenia and Japanese sedge, but also
Swedish wildlife species as wild strawberries and ferns. the various species
attract birds and insects and help to develop the biodiversity of the
neighborhood. it is an experience for both humans, birds and insects.

an automated irrigation system is disposed in the water reservoir and is
coupled to a water supply line. a check valve and a break tank prevents the
water to find its way back into the drinking water network.

From the break tank the water is then mixed by a dispenser with a liquid
nutrient solution. the nutrient solution is dosed after the season.
the wall has a thermostat and humidity indicator via an electric control unit
that determines the amount of water pumped out of the facility. when the
temperature approaches 0°C an air compressor blows water away from the
irrigation pipes. This avoids ice expansion in hoses and fittings.
the water consumption is studied over the year.
the system is connected via a 3G transmitter and internet with the operator
on the operation / control center. if any part of the irrigation system fails, a
warning will be sent out and staff can fix the problem.

research evidence
plant walls have many positive consequences. First they help to
reduce the urban heat island effect. Moreover, they create more
biodiversity as the plants absorb air pollutants, especially the ultrafine
particles that in the normal course of events are inhaled deeply into
the bronchi.
the combination of substrate, plants and trapped layers of air in the
plant wall system acts as a good sound insulation. Sound waves are
captured and reflected. The substrate blocks lower sound waves,
whilst plants obstruct higher frequencies. a plant surface keeps your
office quieter and creates more pleasant surroundings.
A plant wall in your indoor setting muffles noise, and the sound quality
in its surroundings is less hollow. the amount of sound insulation differs
per plant and also depends on how densely the plant wall is built up.
Many studies have demonstrated the soothing and relaxing
psychological effect of greenery. walking through botanical gardens
reduces blood pressure and lowers the heart beat. another study
shows that the presence of greenery helps one recover more quickly
from stress. So looking out on a plant wall is good for your health!
