Welcome to Great Big RhinosFollowing the success of the Great Gorillas Trail in 2013, Paignton Zoo is pleased to present The Great Big Rhino Trail across South Devon.Rhinos are formidable creatures familiar to everyone. They have been around for 40 million years and are an important part of a wide range of ecosystems in Africa and Asia. There are five species: black, white, greater one horned, Javan and Sumatran. All of these are threatened with extinction – three are ‘Critically Endangered’ as defined by the IUCN (World Conservation Union). This means that they will not survive without massive and urgent action. So, with our partners across South Devon, we are showing how science and art can come together to create beauty and inspire the imaginations of adults and children alike. We also want to raise funds for vital rhino conservation work in the field to help them survive into the future. Great Big Rhinos is a world-class mass public art exhibition that everyone can enjoy for free. Forty colourful, life-size rhino sculptures can be seen across the English Riviera, Exeter and surrounding areas, forming a trail for you to enjoy. You can also spot 53 baby rhinos decorated by local schools and community groups, supported by funding from Arts Council England. And if you are traveling to London Paddington or Bristol Temple Meads, you may even spot a rhino there! The rhinos are as wonderfully varied as you could imagine, and have been uniquely designed and painted by the finest artists the region has to offer. We encourage you to try to see as many as you can. Our website, www.greatbigrhinos.org.uk, will help you track them down – and when you’ve spotted a life-size one, be sure to ‘check in’ by entering the unique 3-digit code which you will find on the plinth. Anyone who ‘checks in’ and spots all the life-size rhinos will be entered into a draw to win a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet Paignton Zoo’s (real live) rhinos up close!

We hope you enjoy spotting our Great Big Rhinos!

Exeter City Rhino TrailThe majority of the Exeter rhinos are located within a short walk of Exeter Bus Station and Exeter High Street. To see them you can jump off any bus that drops you at the bus station, all Ex-citi services that stop in the High Street or one of the Park & Ride services. However there are a few rhinos that are located a little further afield. Use one of the following bus services to find them:

ConservationMoney raised by The Great Big Rhino Project will be channelled through Save the Rhino International to support Javan and Sumatran rhino conservation projects. SRI began fundraising for in situ rhino conservation programmes in 1992 and have five strategies for conserving viable populations of rhinos in Africa and Asia:

1. Raising funds to protect and increase rhino numbers and population distribution in African and Asian range states

2. Facilitating the exchange of technical support and information between rhino conservation stakeholders

3. Ensuring that local communities in key rhino areas benefit from employment, capacity building, education, outreach and the sustainable use of natural resources

4. Developing and delivering behaviour-change campaigns to reduce the demand for rhino horn in consumer countries

5. Raising awareness throughout the world of the need for urgent global action on rhino conservation.
