Types of Curettes
A curette is a type of scaler that is designed formoderate calculus removal on supragingival and
subgingival surfaces.
Types of Curettes: niversal

All curettes share the same common elements: $ounded bac%
$ounded toe

The blade is correctly adapted when the toe is directed
interpro*imally and the terminal shan% is parallel to the tooth.
To remove deposits) the cutting edge is applied to the tooth surfaceand the facial surface of the blade is tilted toward the tooth toachieve a +,&-/ angle between the tooth and the blade.
Apply lateral pressure against the tooth and pull upward whilemaintaining contact with the tooth.

To scale the facial surfaces) place the toe of the bladetoward the pro*imal surface with the handle parallel tothe tooth.
Apply stro%es to remove deposits from the midline ofthe tooth to the pro*imal surface.

Gracey Curettes
In the early ;riedy introduced a set of instruments
designed to be used on specific tooth surfaces
that improve adaptation and deposit removal.
The Gracey 'area specific( designs have laid
the groundwor% for the new instruments of
today.
Today) the Gracey Curette family of
instruments give clinicians many options for
their treatment needs.

The Gracey blade design is offsetfrom the terminal shan% at +,/.
This creates one cutting edge which
is referred to as the lower edge.

The rigid shan% may bepreferred for heaviercalculus removal.
