Holden Township
By Johanna Grothe, Goodhue County Historical Society Collections Manager
Holden Township had its first sod broken in 1854 in Sections 23 and 24 by Wanamingo Township settlers Hans Ovaldson and Ole Oakland. The first person to make a claim was Jens Ottun in the fall of 1854 in Section 33. The Finseth brothers purchased Ottun’s claim in 1855 and became the first permanent settlers of the township. Shortly after, other Norwegians settled the area. The western part of the township was settled by Germans. The township was first known as Dunkirk and was attached to Wanamingo Township. In 1858, it became its own township and was named Holden. Cont’d on p.4

The Nansen cheese factory was established in 1904. In 1921, the Nansen Coopera-tive Dairy Association was formed and took control of the factory. The factory closed in 1956.
The Finnesgaard cabin was often used for religious and social gather-ings. For a while, four families lived in the cabin at the same time.

Director’s Column By Char Henn
We have been very busy so far in 2013. We stayed open this January and helped a number of researchers and delivered some programming. The weather wrought havoc on our annual meeting. It had to be postponed twice because of icy road conditions. We finally had it on March 3, and had a program on Rev. Bernt J. and Oline Muus’ relationship, given by Jeff Sauve, associate archivist at St. Olaf College/NAHA. It was a delightful, engaging presentation given in conjunction with the opening of the Holden Township exhibit.
We are planning a membership drive—if you know of anyone who might be interested, please encourage them to join. You could also give a gift membership. We would like to increase membership by 10-15%. As I was writing this column, a supporter called about the Thrivent Choice Dollars ® program. We will be looking into the possibility of signing up for this. This program allows eligible Thrivent members to direct that their dollars go to nonprofits that they want to support. Please stay tuned as we work through this process. I will update you when we get registered. We have been undergoing some reorganization and planning processes as we work to bring the stories of Goodhue County to the public. We expect this process to continue through much of 2013 and welcome input from you on how we are doing and what you would like to see from us.

The Goodhue County Historical Society has done an evaluation and is working on plans on how to become sustainable into the future. There is one thing we are going to do as soon as we can, and it will take help from all areas of the county. We want to do a county-wide membership drive. Since the inception of the State Statute by the Legislature in 1929 that authorized a museum in every county, times have changed. Over the years, each community in Goodhue County has developed a local museum. That is all well and good, as it demonstrates that people value their historical past. GCHS has been preserving artifacts that were brought to the museum by county residents, local governments, and schools for 144 years. We hold records from townships, cemeteries, plat books, personal histories, to list just a few items that have been preserved county-wide. The preservation of history was important to early settlers and fledgling governments. We are fortunate in our county that those who came before us began the first officially recognized county museum in Minnesota. It is becoming more difficult to continue our mission of preservation and education as resources dwindle and society changes. Along with the membership drive, we are asking townships to help us become sustainable. Since we hold a lot of information on township residents as well as governments, we are for asking assistance in the form of annual funding. It is difficult to budget without knowing how many dollars we have to work with.

Your Township Board has received a letter asking for support. Please consider assisting us to continue carrying out the charge the Goodhue County of preserving what our earliest residents felt was important. Many of you bear the name of those who first settled our area. Who knows, your family’s stories might be residing in our collection and may have been for over 100 years. We thank all of you who continue to support us in our mission. We invite those of you who consider preserving our past as important to consider sustainable township support as part of the county’s legacy. Thank you
Annual Meeting Highlights... After two GCHS Annual Meetings were cancelled and rescheduled due to inclement weather, a third time proved to be a charm, although just barely, since less than 48 hours later, a snow storm left almost a foot of snow on the ground! We would like to thank outgoing board members Ron Berg, Paul Bringgold, Sandra Olson, Bob Peterson, and Bob Rohl for their service on the Board of Directors. Please give a big welcome to new board members Art Owen, Todd Prink, Bonnie Roach and Keith Fossen. A big thank you is also extended to Jeff Suave, who gave his enjoyable presentation of Muus vs. Muus: Holden in the Limelight.
Boy Scout Eagle Scout Project helps GCHS When Boy Scout Caleb Wilson was looking for an Eagle Scout project, he contacted us. One of the project ideas that we presented was to build a table display case similar to other cases that are heavily used. Caleb, three boy scouts, and four adults from Boy Scout Troop 913 from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints took on the project. They spent sixty hours building the beautiful display case. Thank you Caleb and Boy Scout Troop 913 for the display case!
In this article I will talk about cemeteries. At the History Center, there is a whole section of resources about cemeteries around Goodhue County. One of the resources you will find is a book, Goodhue County Cemeteries, prepared by the Goodhue County GIS office in 2011 containing the locations of many of the counties’ cemeteries. You can also look online at www.co.goodhue.mn.us/departments/land/gis/historic places.aspx. Map tools you will find there are: 1. Historic Sites 2. Find a Cemetery 3. Historic District 4. A Ghost Town 5. Find a Rural School House The Historical Society also has a lot of information on cemeteries and pictures. A search of the Dalby Database at www.dalbydata.com will help you find a family member and what cemeteries they are in. This can be researched at the GCHS or on your computer at home. I found relatives in eight cemeteries around the county. I do take pictures of family tombstones and, if you enjoy the computer, there are websites for finding graves. Find a Grave has millions of cemetery records, along with images of headstones. It’s a free resource for finding a final resting place of family members or famous folks. A lot of websites will give you seven days free too. It is a good resource to use. The GCHS also has vertical files which has information on dates of cemeteries when they first started, from Belle Creek to Zumbrota. There is also some information from the surrounding counties of Dakota, Dodge, Rice, and Wabasha. There are church records from St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church for baptisms from 1855-1981, marriages from 1863-1982, and deaths from 1863-1906; Holden Church death records from 1858-1897 written in Norwegian, Gol Church from 1875-1900, Old Stone Hauge from 1875-1902, and Moland Lutheran Church. I would like to fix a mistake I made several months ago. The phone number for the Family History Library in Red Wing is 651-267-2455. They give a great service to genealogy buffs. Try them out, you’ll be amazed. I also would like to say thank you to Linda Johnson for her informative article in the last newsletter. Until next time, happy hunting!

By 1860, 633 people were living in the township. Communities in the township included Holden, Eidsvold, Nansen, Finseth Station, and part of Norway. The community of Holden was located at the corners of Sections 4 and 8. A post office was established in 1860, closed a few months later, and reopened in 1867. Throughout the years, the Holden area had general stores, a blacksmith shop, a wagon shop, a shoe shop, a hotel, a tailor, a painter, and a physician. The Vang Lutheran Church was in the
community from 1862 until 1896 when it moved one mile north. The community slowly declined even before the post office closed in 1903. All that is left in Holden are two houses and the Vang Lutheran Church cemetery. Named after a place in Norway, Eidsvold was located along the border of Sections 23 and 26. A post office was established in 1875. The community consisted of Dovre School, two blacksmith shops, and the cooperative general store Forening Dovre Handels. The post office closed in 1888. Nansen was located in Section 12. A
general store was established around 1892. In 1936, the store was destroyed by a fire during a heat wave. The Nansen Post Office was in operation from 1898 until 1905. The community also housed a cheese factory. Finseth Station was a Chicago Great Western railroad station located in Section 32. Finseth School was located nearby. Norway, which was never platted, had its beginnings when a post office was established in a “shanty” store in 1857 in Section 24 in Holden Township. A short time later, the store and post office moved just across the township line to Section 19 in Wanamingo Township. The small trading community also had a blacksmith, a shoe shop, a feed mill, and a physician. The post office closed in 1902 and the store closed shortly afterwards. Today, Norway consists of fields. Nine school districts were located in the township. The first school, established in 1858, was the Underdahl School (District #54). Other schools were Rauk or Holden or Baker School (#55), Dovre School (#56), Finseth School (#57), Tasa School (#58), Ugland School (#145), Norway School (#148), unnamed school (#151), and Hildebrandt School (#153). Holden Township has many stories to tell. To learn more about the township and the families who lived there, visit the exhibit which is on display through the end of June 2013.

2012 Directors Report, by Char Henn The economy continues to have an impact on our work. We are moving forward with a new website, and offering research and e-commerce opportunities is a goal of 2013. A Legacy Grant allowed us to research, write, and add more than two dozen Goodhue County subjects to the Minnesota Historical Society’s online Minnesota encyclopedia, Mnopedia. Fred Johnson was hired to do this work, and his entries on Eugenie Anderson and Bill Sweasy have been highlighted on MinnPost.
This past year’s D.A.S.H. (Developing Awareness of Students’ History) Program was our seventeenth. Three hundred and sixty third- through sixth-graders, teachers, and chaperones took part, learning about various aspects of county history. Military, agriculture, reptiles, rural schools, woodworking, and immigration are just some of learning stations that students attended.
We average more than 40 researchers a month in our research library. Our website continues to have thousands visitors and we are always surprised by how many of them are new visitors to the site. We are on Facebook now and had almost 7,800 views this past year.
We provided 46 programs this year on a variety of topics—Goodhue County’s Ghost Towns, hats, nuclear energy, and poetry, to name a few. Our big event was hosting “Why Treaties Matter: Self-Government in the Dakota and Ojibwe Nations,” a collaboration of the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council, the Minnesota Humanities Center and the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian. This project is funded in part with money from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund that was created with a vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008 and The Patrick and Aimee Butler Family Foundation. We co-sponsored this program with the Red Wing Arts Association, with assistance from the Red Wing Human Rights Commission. The exhibit and accompanying programs brought in more than 450 people to the history center during its run. Overall, we visited with more than 6,100 people through our outreach programming. Every other month, you can read in the Today Magazine an article that one of us has written.
We carried on fundraising efforts. Bling and Chocolate is just around the corner, and we hope to beat last year’s record-setting amount raised. Our first hangar dance fundraiser went well and we have already started planning for 2013’s hangar dance.
We continue to work on building issues, wanting the museum to be the best building that it can be for the irreplaceable collections we maintain.
Our county outreach includes our series of township exhibits. The fifteenth in the series, Holden Township, has just opened. We hold quarterly meetings for our affiliates (the other historical organizations throughout the county). We catch up on the activities of each, talk about museum subjects, provide advice and support, and get to see each institution as they show off their sites.
With the retirement of Penny Curtis at the end of September—thank you, Penny, for all that you have done—we are now a full-time staff of 4 and 2 weekend employees, who, obviously, have a lot of help getting things done. More than 125 volunteers provide project help—inputting databases, transcribing oral histories and diaries, serve on committees and the board, act as tour guides and research assistants, and myriad other tasks. Without you, this history center would not possible. Thank you for your support and we look forward to furthering our mission in 2013.

If you answered YES to any of these questions, then join us at the Red Wing Perkins
Restaurant on Wednesday, April 17 between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. for
Dine To Donate! Dine To Donate! Dine To Donate! Dine To Donate!
It’s a delicious way to raise money for the GCHS; just dine at Perkins and 10% of our event’s
food and bakery pre-tax sales* will be donated to the GCHS by Perkins of Red Wing located at
812 Withers Harbor Drive. Support the Historical Society - visit with and see other members
and supporters and bring your friends - the more people, the more money that will be donated
by Perkins to the museum! *Coupons or discounts will not be honored in conjunction with a “Dine to Donate Night”.
The History Center will be joining once again in the annual National Endowment for the Arts Blue Star Museum Program, a collaboration with Blue Star Families’ Operation Appreciation. The GCHS is one of more than 1500 museum to offer free admission to military personnel and their families this summer. Blue Star Families is a non-profit organization that works to support America’s military families from all branches of the service. The program offers free admission to museums across the country for active duty military personnel beginning on May 25 and extending through labor Day.
Goodhue County Passport 2013
In case you missed it last year, we are once again presenting our successful Goodhue County Passport program, valid from May 25 through Labor Day. Here’s how it works: • Everyone is welcome to participate. One
individual or member of the family can pick up a passport at any of the participating history sites. The passport is free, but admission charges may apply.
• A guided or self-guided tour needs to be completed at each site. A site representative will stamp and initial the passport.
• The sites can be visited in any order. • After you have visited all the sites, please fill out
the contact information on the passport and leave it at any site or mail it to the Goodhue County Historical Society. It’s that easy!
Please check our Facebook page and website often for details as they become available!

John Handler has been entering the names, dates, and offenses into a database from the Goodhue County Sheriff ledgers that date as far back as the 1850s. He also was a Station Master during DASH in the Geology Room. Dave Twaites entered all of the names from the 1918 Alien Registration Forms from microfilm into the computer. He is currently working on entering information from the newspaper index cards - a project that volunteers in the latter 1980s indexed the Red Wing newspapers from the 1850s - 1900. Mary Yates is transcribing oral histories and is also a Library Assistant. She also researches and writes the Looking Back column that appears each week in the Red Wing Republican Eagle newspaper. Lora Henn has been transcribing the diaries of Lewis Johnson. The diaries date from 1864-1930s. She is currently on 1896. Audrey Bodin has been clipping obituaries from the newspapers (plus a recipe or two!), and Linda Johnson enters those names into the obituary database. The database currently has 24,828 names! The weekend Library Assistants have been busy with researchers. Having our library open Saturday and Sunday has given us more exposure, and it has allowed many people to take advantage of our resources, who usually don’t have time to come during the week. It is such a pleasure to tell researchers that we have weekend library hours! All of our Board and Committee members are volunteers. They have worked tirelessly on Historical Society matters, building issues, as well as planning events and fundraisers. Bling & Chocolate and the 1940s Hangar Dance wouldn’t have been the success that they were without their expertise and energy. DASH (Developing Awareness of Students’ History) has been our largest volunteer-need event. We typically use between 60-75 volunteers for this educational program, with some volunteers coming back year after year since the beginning of the program more than 15 years ago! We rely on volunteers to staff our booth at the Goodhue County Fair every summer. Last year we also staffed the Rural School building. Look for an even greater presence by the GCHS and our volunteers during this coming Fair.
Volunteers have also planted flowers, painted walls, addressed envelopes, brought doughnuts, and assisted in many other important behind the scenes activities that help in museum operations. Without your help, we couldn’t accomplish many of these projects that help support our mission. Your time that you have given us is also important in an in-kind donation when applying for grants. For the year 2012, our volunteers have clocked 1848 hours! According to Independent Sector, the leading network for nonprofits, foundations, and corporate giving programs, the dollar value of a volunteer hour in Minnesota is $21.62 an hour. For the GCHS, your 1848 hours is valued at an amount of $39,953.76! Thank you, thank you, thank you! If you would like to get involved with these and many other opportunities available, please give us a call or stop in for a chat. We look forward to hearing from you!
We ♥ our Volunteers!
