Getting Ready for the Move
A Gaggle of Phones Makes a Lot of Noise
So often at concerts and theaters, we are asked to “silence our phones.” The request is so common that we often tune it out. Over time, most people have learned to quiet their phones during Mass. Still, we seem to have some sort of microphone interference regularly at Mass. We might expect this in the new Church as well. A quick search of internet articles suggests that the culprit might be too many cell phones actively searching, listening, and reaching out to cyberspace at the same time – even though they are “on silent”. Al-so, we might have too many phones too close to the sound system equipment. The impact on a sound system is much like that of having 400 people softly tap their shoes at one time. What one person does singly makes little noise. When coupled with the actions of 399 other people, it can make a lot of noise.
Often in churches, we hear the sound system scream, boom or crash as the electronic feedback overwhelms the microphones and trans-mitters. So often we think that the priest and deacon have their mi-crophones on and are standing too close to each other. While that is sometimes true, at other times something else might be the cause of the ruckus. The cause may be the feedback from our phones – hun-dreds of them. Theaters and concert halls put in place expensive technology and antennae that help to break up the noise produced by a gaggle of phones. Churches do not use this same expensive tech-nology so we have to rely on some of the best technology available – our phones and fingers! Before Mass, please turn your phone off or turn it to airplane mode. This cancels the searching pulses. Certainly, there are some with loved ones in the hospital or traveling that need to be available for that emergency text or call. The rest of us generally don’t need to have our phones on during Mass. Again, this is asking all to be counter-cultural, but let’s agree to let those invitations, jokes, pic-tures, food shots and recipes wait until Mass is over. At St. Theresa, we probably won’t say “silence your phones” before every Mass, but let’s get into the habit of turning them off or at least to “airplane mode.” Our pastor, ears, and sound system thank you!
In anticipation of returning to the Church, we will present a series of articles to help
St. Theresa Community prepare for the move into the Church.
See below for the third article of the series.

In 1833, Blessed Frédéric Ozanam founded the Society of St. Vincent de Paul along with 6 friends. To fund the activities to help the poor, they took a secret collection using a black bag. They passed it from person to person until each one had given their share. Because the Society does not receive DSF funding, Bishop Markovsky al-lowed us to have our first Black Bag collection in 1970. Forty-nine years
later, we continue the tradition of the Black Bag Collection. Because behind every “thank you,” exists a donor like
you, we’re asking you to join and donate to our 49th Annual Black Bag
Collection July 13-14, 2019.
