Global Xpress
It’s a scenario that’s increasingly common.
Airborne, naval and land forces need to operate seamlessly, enabled by secure, reliable communications wherever the mission arises. All this is possible with Inmarsat GX. It’s the first global Ka-band network – delivering secure, end-to-end wideband connectivity for mobile operations worldwide.
Built specifically with government customers in mind, it’s the first global commercial network that is interoperable with MILSATCOM Ka-band networks, providing resilient, worldwide augmentation. So you can integrate smoothly into GX with your own platforms or adopt it as a standalone solution.
In any operation, reliability can never be compromised. Inmarsat offers
Imagine a surveillance scenario. A UAV streams live full-motion video to an offshore naval taskforce via satellite. It shows a potential threat of terrorist activity at the border. Within minutes, approval is given for Special Forces to proceed ashore. The team is soon in place to support local security forces. They capture the suspects before they reach the border. Video footage is sent back to confirm their identity. The land border is secured once again.
unprecedented levels of availability through a unique combination of Ka-band and L-band technology. It’s the only multiband satellite network of its kind.
As you would expect, Inmarsat will offer the highest security levels from a trusted supplier that’s been serving government customers with mission-critical communications for over 30 years.

Why Inmarsat GX?Seamless global mobility
Wherever the next mission arises, GX has you covered with a network that’s owned and managed by Inmarsat. Purposely designed for mobility, it will provide a continuous, consistent service as traffic is handed seamlessly across each spot beam and from one satellite to another. Services will be delivered over our latest generation of satellites – the Inmarsat-5s (I-5). The first satellite is already operating over Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia and the second is undergoing testing, before going live in late Q3 2015 over the Americas, Atlantic, Western Europe, West Africa and Eastern Pacific.
Consistent higher performanceBecause our network is global, Inmarsat GX delivers higher performance consistently. And when there are surges in demand, we can direct additional beams to ensure performance is maintained. GX offers managed services for flexible connectivity on demand, or steerable high-capacity leases. GX is particularly suited to bandwidth-intensive mobile applications for AISR, special operations and expeditionary forces, live full-motion video, intelligence, command and control, and theatre backhaul.
Inmarsat reliabilityInmarsat has been operating the most reliable satellite communications network for over 30 years and quality of service is fundamental to our business. For extra
resilience, GX is complemented by our L-band services on the Inmarsat-4s, which deliver 99.9% network availability. It’s the only network that combines both Ka-band and L-band technologies, underpinned by a fully redundant ground infrastructure.
More affordableIn a climate of continuing budget pressures, Inmarsat GX offers some respite with more affordable service and terminals. Ka-band is already more efficient in its use of bandwidth and far less congested than Ku band. And because we own and manage the entire global network, we make better use of the satellite resources to achieve significant cost savings.
InteroperableInmarsat GX is the first global commercial satellite communications network that is interoperable with government Ka-band networks. Using contiguous commercial military Ka-band spectrum, it provides global reach and additional capacity for those with existing Ka-band networks, and peer capabilities for those without. Selected terminals tune through both commercial and military bands to enhance operational flexibility.
Highest security standardsThe Inmarsat GX network is baselined to satisfy US Mission Assurance Category (MAC) level III, with secure gateways and satellite commanding. Secure GX offers
enhanced security at MAC I/II levels through separation from commercial traffic. We operate a dedicated cyber security team, and data and signaling are encrypted to the highest standards.
More compact terminalsInmarsat GX will deliver high data rates, more efficiently than comparable ku-band terminals, enabling more compact terminals to be used or higher performance from similar terminals. A broad portfolio of terminals are available now from industry leading manufacturers for government applications – in mobile, portable and fixed formats to suit all environments. Inmarsat and their GX Terminal Partners will continue to develop the portfolio and technology and customer requirements evolve.
AvailabilityBoth GX Managed services on the Global Service Beams in commercial Ka-band and GX Lease services in steerable Military Ka-band spot beams are available now in the IOR satellite region.
The AOR region will be coming online in late Q3 2015. Global coverage will be completed in 2016.

Key TerminologyTerminal Type: Unique identifier used to associate a terminal within the Inmarsat Gateway to allow provisioning and management.
Terminal Efficiency Group: Terminals are grouped according to their spectral efficiency for the purposes of service pricing, with groupings as follows:
Land Group Performance RangeG/T (dB/K) EIRP (dBW)
1 <=18.5 <=52.5
2 18.51-21.5 52.51-55.5
3 21.51-24.5 55.51-58
4 >=24.51 >=58.01
iDirect Velocity: iDirect network technology providing core subscription service offering for Global Xpress within Commercial Ka-band range (29-30GHz) on I-5. Terminals operating in the Velocity network require integration of the CX751 GX Core Module and GX compatible RF components (e.g. implement iDirect protocols like OpenBMIP). All Category 1 terminals are fitted with the CX751 Core Module.
iDirect Evolution: Legacy iDirect network technology supporting the Interim Government Plan within limited designated beams of the Commercial Ka-band range (29.5-30 GHz only). Terminals operating in this service are integrated with iDirect Evolution modems, including the e850MP, e800 and e8350. These terminals are considered Category 4, and are not compatible with the core iDirect Velocity System offering global commercial Ka band access. Additionally, such terminals may require significant redesign for upgrade to the Velocity based technology.

Important Characteristics of GX Terminals
Integration of the GX core module requires manufacturers to comply with a detailed integration guide, called the System Definition Manual (SDM). Similar to the process of building a BGAN terminal, manufacturers will undergo a series of design validation, verification and type approval steps to ensure terminals will operate correctly within the GX architecture. Typically this process can take 6-18 months, depending on the maturity and general compliance of the system.
There are many features of GX terminals that make them unique to non-GX terminals, including security and authentication mechanisms, terminal configuration control, operating protocols, and many other features which are fundamental to the overall service model designed by Inmarsat.
Its important to note that simply upgrading a non-Inmarsat GX Terminal Partner’s terminal with a GX core module may not satisfy the requirements for GX Type Approval.
Inmarsat has implemented a specific strategy surrounding the design, production and operation of GX terminals, to differentiate GX from legacy VSAT systems. Central to this strategy is the GX core module.

Global Xpress for Government 39
Further developments Global Xpress is an ever evolving broadband solution and Inmarsat has invested a significant amount of resources into ensuring future development meet your communications’ requirements. We already have the following developments:
Maritime Category 1+4 Terminals
A full Category1 implementation and Type approval will be required for use of these terminals on the GX Velocity network for GX managed services in commercial Ka-band
The terminal will then be switchable - hardware or software - to a Category 4, none GX Velocity mode which supports national/commercial networks or GX Lease services with a customer defined modem
Some of these solutions may also be multi-band to support C-/Ku-/X-band with a hardware swap out to support non-Ka-band solutions utilised by the customer.
Development is already underway and Inmarsat hope to announce some specific solutions in the second half of 2015.
ManPack Terminals
Inmarsat are engaged with manufacturers to look at the next generation of highly portable land terminal solutions with the aim of providing a truly manpackable solution.
Such a manpack can already be supported on Military Ka-band Lease Services as Category 4 Type Approvals, but Inmarsat intends to introduce Category1 terminals utilising the next generation iDirect 950mp small form factor military grade manpack modem.
Inmarsat will engage with VARs for feedback as development progresses.
Category 2 Land Terminals
The next generation iDirect Defence modems (950mp small form-factor manpack modem and the Aero Defence Core Module) will allow wideband Ka-band operation across the full 2 GHz of the Commercial and Military Ka-bands
The use of these modems will enable a range of existing Category 1 and Category 4 terminals to be converted to wideband operation, which will allow the use of iDirect Velocity based services across commercial and military Ka-band on GX and for iDirect Evolution based services to be used on GX Lease and non-GX national services.
