Although the economic picture in the USA is decidedlymixed the latest Snapshot suggests a definiteimprovement in the professional and managerial jobsmarket. The percentage of organisations hiring has risento 55% from 43% in April and of those intending to hirein the coming quarter to 56% from 34%. Furthermorefiring levels are down, albeit marginally from 38% to34%.

I n the U.S., where a record five million people have

been out of work for more than six months, all signs point to a slow, recovery and a long period of highunemployment.

However the Manpower survey does hint at a slow-down in the wave of job losses, with a greater proportionof U.S. employers expecting to keep staff levelsunchanged in the quarter ahead .

The highest current hiring levels amongst the largereconomies were in France (54%), UK (50%) Belgium

(50%) and Germany (46%). The lowest level of hiringwas in Switzerland at 35% of businesses surveyed,reflecting the economy s reliance on the financialsector.

It's a similar story across most of Europe, with hiring

sentiments remaining generally negative but eight outof 10 employers saying they will not reduce staff numbers further

E mployers in India and Brazil are leading the way as

far as recruitment confidence is concerned, withA ustralia, China, Singapore and Canada also showingsigns of recovery.

I ndia emerged from the survey with a netemployment outlook of 25 (25 per cent moreemployers planning to take on staff than are planningto shed them), closely followed by Brazil with a figure

of 21.
