The Germantown Village Board rejected aproposal Dec. 16 to have the village purchasethe Blackstone Creek Golf Course for the pur-pose of developing the property as park space.
An offer to purchase 153 acres at a cost of$5,350 per acre was made to the village bycourse owners. While the board had the optionof discussing the offer in closed session, theboard voted in open session not to pursue theoffer.
During board discussion, several trusteesindicated they were wary of an additionalexpanse at this time.
Trustee Terri Kaminski said she is "hard
pressed" to remove any items from the village'scapital expense list."I don't think we can afford this," Kaminski
said of the golf course offer. "I can't find any cuts(from the capital expense budget)."
Kaminski added that if the village has torepair Donges Bay Road on its own starting in2015 instead of receiving funding from statesources, that and any impact of Obamacare
could be additional expenses the village couldbe facing.
"If we had some of these things taken off our
docket by 2015, I would feel comfortable say-ing let's go get a park," Kaminski said. Sheadded that the site is a perfect place for a park.
"It comes down to if we can afford it," shesaid.
The board action came after several resi-dents spoke in opposition to the offer.
Resident Bill Steitz said he objected to thecost for renovating a golf course to a park evenas the village had problems maintaining roadsand other infrastructure.
Its not good use of taxpayer money at thistime. There are higher priorities that should bedone, Steitz said afterward.
When interviewed afterward, Steitz alsosaid the site floods several times annually and aresult the residents couldnt use the area at thosetimes.
Resident Dan Wing, when interviewed afterthe vote, said he opposed borrowing money forrecreational land while there is a backlog ofroads that are in need of repair. He also saidthe village cant maintain the parks that we
have.Wing also objected to the cost of the main-
tenance and developing the park.
Costs are a major factor here, he said.Village President Dean Wolter said he seesthe land as an opportunity to draw people fromthe freeway toward the village's downtown.
"I also see it as a way to spur some devel-opment on that property as well," Wolter said.
There was previously an offer from theMilwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District(MMSD) to purchase the land as part of its"greenseams" initiative . Regarding the currentoffer, Wolter said the village discussed optionsfor purchasing the land in several closed ses-sions since May. A formal offer to purchase theland was made to the village earlier this fall,
which had a 45-day window to respond.During questioning about potential costs formaintaining the property and developing theplan for a park, Wolter cited information fromvillage staff indicating that full service for mow-ing the property and tree work would cost$1,200 per week during the summer months, midlevel service of mowing once a month andno trimming would cost $521 weekly while lowlevel service of mowing once a year and nogeneral maintenance would cost $340 weeklyduring summer months.
Trustee Shane Daniels said in principle, itsa good idea but cited objections from residentsover the potential purchase. He asked if the vil-
lage could go to referendum to get residentinput on the proposal.
Maybe this is a big enough ticket to bring
to the community for a full decision, Danielssaid.
Wolter replied that it is possible for the April
election. However, the village is dealing with aprivate land owner and it would be up to him ifhe wanted to hold on and wait for the results ofthe question.
Trustee Jeff Werderman said a five to 10year plan is needed to determine the cost to tax-payers. Besides the mowing costs, the villagewould also have to determine the costs of devel-oping the site into a park.
Werderman also said the potential costs ofreconstructing Donges Bay Road led him in thedirection of opposing the land purchase.
Wolter said he supported the request of theland as a way of developing a community cen-
ter that will have access to a waterway andcan draw people to a downtown area. Woltercited Waukesha and Chippewa Falls as com-munities that used waterways to develop down-town area.
Troy Schmidt, a co-owner of the Blackstonecourse, noted that Blackstone officials came tothe board with a proposal two years ago thatinvolved MMSD in which the agency would pur-chase 131 acres and turn it over to the village. While the village first supported the project, theboard later asked for a proposal that did notinvolve the MMSD.
Weve done what we felt what we wereasked to do, Schmidt said.
The motion to not purchase the site wasapproved 8-1, with Wolter voting against themotion.

Shutouts are a par t of hockey, but shut-ting out your opponents for an entire tour-nament is a feat all its own and one that isshared by the Washington County YouthHockey Association's Squirt "B" team aftertheir tournament championship in MosineeDecember 14-15.
"This team is really rolling and hasgelled very nicely," said Tom Postulka,Assistant Coach for the Squirt "B" Ice. "Thisis phenomenal achievement for any team, let alone it being these kids first ever tourna-
ment."The Ice opened up tournament play witha convincing victory over the tournamenthosts the Mosinee Pride 10-0. In semifinalplay, the Ice was pitted against a toughGreen Bay Bobcats team. The defense ofthe Ice and goalie Kami McCardle provedto be too much for the Bobcats leading theIce to a 3-0 victory. In the championship the
Ice coasted to an impressive 12-0 victoryover the Eagle River Eagles.
"This was a great learning experiencefor our team," Postulka added. "This isn'tsomething that happens too often and I'mhappy these kids got this experience."

The winning continues for the Germantownboys basketball team.
The Warhawks broke the Wisconsin highschool record for most consecutive wins Dec. 17,defeating Milwaukee Lutheran 90-63. The gamewas the 63rd consecutive win for Germantown, astreak which started with a 73-58 win overBrookfield Central Nov. 29,2011.
Germantown broke the record set byWhitefish Bay Dominican from 1977-80.
Germantown tied the record with a 75-29 routof Dominican at the NY2LA Classic Dec. 14.
For the record breaking game, MilwaukeeLutheran led for most of the first quarter and helda 23-19 lead following two three-point baskets by
Jevon Smith. But Germantown's Evan Wesenbergresponded with two layups to tie the score at the
4:44 mark of the second quarter. Kyle Theis gaveGermantown the lead for good when he made afree throw at the 2:44 mark and then converted abasket off a missed free throw seconds later.
"These games are never easy and it's neverover until it's over," Germantown Coach SteveShowalter said when asked if he was concernedabout the close score (36-31) at halftime.
Germantown broke the game open with a 10-
2 run to take a 55-37 lead following a layup byLamonte Bearden at the 2:45 mark of the thirdquarter. Germantown led by as much as 32 pointsuntil the Red Knights scored several points in theclosing minutes of the game.
"We made a run and we played somedefense and we we're coming this way fast,"Showalter said, referring to the south end of thecourt. "Once we started going this way fast, wewere tough to beat."
Wesenberg and Showalter both ledGermantown with 17 points while LamonteBearden added 16 points and Brian Beardenadded 15 points.
In comments to the crowd after the game,Showalter added that the record "is not just a trib-ute to this team and these boys here, this is a trib-ute to all the kids that have busted their rear endshere in this gym for us and all the kids that got thisthing started and have made it a lot easier on the
some of rest of these guys. They've done a greatjob and we hope to keep making you guys proudand making you guys happy and keep this thinggoing."
Afterward, Coach Showalter explained thedifferent reaction between continuing a winningstreak during the regular season as opposed towinning a state championship.
"When you win a championship you're done

for the year and you go home and celebrate,"Showalter said. "Well, tomorrow afternoon at2:30 p.m. we're going to be in here trying to get
better. There's a sense of relief with that number(breaking the consecutive winning streak record),but we've got a lot of work to do yet."
The Hamilton boys basketball team fellbehind early to Brookfield Central Dec. 13
and spent the rest of the night catching up,falling to the Lancers 70-60.

quarter. Central answered by scoring thenext 10 points and held a lead between
five and 11 points throughout the third quar-ter. Hamilton couldn't get any closer thanseven points the rest of the way.
Afterward, Hamilton Coach AndyCerroni noted his team missed some bas-kets early in the game as Central opened itsfirst lead.
"They got that lead and we battledback. I'm so proud of our kids, they juststarted to get it and play and not forcethings," Cerroni said. "When you makeshots, that makes a d ifference."
Cerroni said his team put another
shooter on the court early in an attempt toanswer Central. Cerroni also noted that
Central converted free throws down thestretch to put the game away.
