• Mass communication - ability to reach many people at same time– Each individual type is a “medium”– Comes from verb “to mediate”– Includes publishing, gaming, filmmaking,
photography, music, broadcasting and internet– List growing all the time; many new media
platforms combine different media in one (convergence)

Why study it?• Most people in UK exposed to more than 3000
images/messages daily• New blog created every second• YouTube has over a billion users–almost a third of
all people on the Internet• In 2011, 500 million people worldwide played games
for at least one hour per day• 9 out of 10 teenager have computer, games console
and/ or mobile phone• BBC news site updated every second• Number of text messages sent daily greater than
total global population• Average teenager spends nearly £1000 a year on
socialising and image alone
