But couldnt another kind of revlion be brought about a revision thatIs as greatly needed as downward revision of the tariff We have inmind a revision of the expenses ofthe Government They should be re-

vised downward If there were sucha revision there wouldnt be need tohunt for new sources of revenue

The other day Congress gave theSpeaker of the House an automobile-to cost and also gave the VicePresident n machine of the same sortNo doubt the Government will have tobear the expenses of a chauffeur foreach of these machines and also theirgarage expenses Each machine Itis safe to say will cost the Govern-ment 92000 a year Wouldnt eitherthe Speaker or thehave been just as happy with the modest carriage to which they have beenaccustomed

Automobiles for these officialsmeans more than the cost and supportof these two machines It means thatbefore long every head of a bureauand every chief clerk will be ridingaround in an automobile bought andmaintained by the Government Automobiles mean Increased cost of livingand that calls for higher salaries

And this Is but one Item of themany that make up the cost of gov-

ernment Surely it Is time for thecampaign orators of each of the greatparties to begin to talk of revising-the expenses of the Government down-ward Talk of that sort would bepopular It would appeal strongly tothe common people who work earlyand late to get the bare necessaries-or at least the comfort of life

No definite Information has beengiven out for publication on this Im-

portant subject but the Southern wasthought to be behind the deal whenthe Gainesville and Gulf was purchas-

ed by the Floridians and strong beIkif regarding this interest still pre-

vails although the big system hasnever purchased stock In the smallroad A local railroad man yesterdaystated that he did not believe that theSouthern would ever build on or buy

south of Jacksonville having perfected satisfactory traffic arrangementswith the Atlantic Coast Line Notransportation fact has ever beenmore evident than that Tampa haslong been In sore need of a quickerroute to the West however and

the Southern Is Interested sucha route could be secured without thenecessity of building any great length-of roadway
