Are gas turbines obsolete?EUTurbines contradicts: Gas powerplants are much more than just abridging technology

Prof. Dr. Thomas Thiemann, President of theEuropean manufacturers association EUTurbines,explains in an interview why gas-fired power plants aremuch more than just a bridging technology on the wayto a climate-neutral future: "They offer the opportunityfor a climate-neutral supply of electricity and heat. Theleverage effect is enormous. If it is possible to operateelectricity grids with reliably available, climate-neutralpower, it will be possible to cover our needscompletely with renewable energies. ThomasThiemann is also Head of Development at Siemens, aspecialist in Energy Transition Technologies andPresident of VDMA Power Systems. By 2030 theturbine manufacturers want to supply 100 percenthydrogen-powered turbines. "We are determined tofollow this path and develop solutions for completedecarbonisation. Our goal: Climate neutrality – The gasturbine industry’s commitments drivingthe transition to a decarbonisedenergy mix

EUTurbines is the association of leading Europeangas and steam turbine manufacturers under theumbrella of the VDMA. Members are Ansaldo Energia,Baker Hughes, Doosan, Škoda Power, GE Power,MAN Energy Solutions, Mitsubishi Hitachi PowerSystems, Siemens Gas & Power and Solar Turbines.As early as 2020, manufacturers in Europe will offergas turbines that can process up to 20 percenthydrogen in gas. By 2030 they will develop turbinesthat work with pure hydrogen. In addition, retrofitsolutions will be available so that operators cancontinue to operate younger gas power plants even ifthe hydrogen content increases. All members havesigned this voluntary commitment because they regardthe decarbonisation of power generation incombination with a clever coupling of sectors as agreat opportunity for a faster reduction of global CO2emissions.

OPEN LETTER FROM INDUSTRY ASSOCIATIONS

Striving to be the first climate neutralcontinent by 2050

The European Commission has presented ambitiousplans with its "Green Deal" in Brussels: Europe shouldbe the first continent to become climate-neutral by2050. The Green Deal is to include, in addition to thelegal anchoring of climate targets, various packages ofmeasures to enable climate neutrality and at the sametime generate opportunities for industrial policy. Inaddition to sector coupling, changes in energytaxation and sustainable mobility strategies, thepromotion of sustainable alternative fuels is alsoenvisaged. The "dream" of the partnership with NorthAfrica formulated by the first EU Vice President, FransTimmermans, to produce hydrogen there and transportit to Europe using the existing infrastructure shouldalso be seen in this context.

Industry believes that a consistent package ofmeasures for the transformation of the energy andtransportation systems can thus become a reality. Onbehalf of 17 associations the VDMA has sent an openletter to EU Vice President Frans Timmermans on theimportance of hydrogen and P2X. In the letter, theindustry associations, including VDMA Engines &Systems along with AG P2X4A and VDMA PowerSystems together with EUTurbines and EUGINE,make concrete proposals on how an industrialised andcompetitive market for P2X can be developed inEurope.

Interested in hydrogen and P2X?Become a member of the VDMA platform "Power-to-X for Applications

The VDMA platform P2X4A is successfully promoting power-to-X technology. It was founded about a year ago and has around 80 members accross the entire plant engineering value chain. In addition, it also includes the customers of green hydrogen and synthetic fuels, such as automobile manufacturers, as well as companies in the mineral oil industry. Members from the industrial engine sector have been campaigning for a long time, for example, for the Maritime Energy Transition, which aims to achieve "green" propulsion and climate-neutral shipping. In addition to hybridisation and the use of LNG gas engines, the technology roadmap envisages the gradual replacement of fossil fuels with e-fuels.

FVV Newsletter | February 2020Many questions remain unanswered in the transformation of the energy and transport systems, actually.Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Peter Altmaier is convinced that natural gas will remain

an important part of the energy supply system - with Gas2030 as the keyword. However, if we want toachieve the ambitious climate targets we have set ourselves in the long term, the remaining gas demandwill have to be increasingly replaced by CO2-free or CO2-neutral gaseous energy carriers. These includein particular the so-called "green" hydrogen, which is produced from renewable energies by electrolysis,

and the "blue" hydrogen, which is obtained from natural gas by capturing CO2. In any case, in PeterAltmaier's view, hydrogen is a key raw material that will be indispensable for the successful

decarbonisation of both his own and many other economies. This opinion is also shared by FransTimmermans, 1st Vice-Chancellor of the EU Commission, who wants to make Europe the first continent tobecome climate-neutral by 2050 while establishing forward-looking industrial policy framework conditions.

The FVV together with its network partners is also intensively engaged at political and operational researchlevel with hydrogen as the currently most "hyped and hopeful" of the energy sources of the future. Inaddition, we take a look ahead to Japan: At the JSAE 2020 Spring Conference in Yokohama at the

beginning of May, there will be an FVV Session at the invitation of our partner association AICE. Andanother German-Japanese partner project under the CORNET flag will be launched.

PG1 | H2 in the Gas Network: How much hydrogen will gas engines be able totolerate?

Hydrogen can reduce CO2 emissions and will thus make a significant contribution to climate protection in thefuture. Hydrogen will also play an important role in a climate-neutral mobility. However, if this energy source isincreasingly used to heat buildings, for industrial processes or to power vehicles, gas networks will have to absorband transport higher and fluctuating quantities of hydrogen. But how does the increased admixture ofhydrogen affect today's gas engine applications, especially combustion engines in vehicles or combinedheat and power plants? This is being investigated in an FVV project carried out jointly with the DVGW - theGerman competence network for all questions related to gas and water supply. The researchers are looking at howmuch hydrogen the gas engines can tolerate and how technologies and gas networks can best be adapted. Theaim is to work together with vehicle and engine manufacturers to find the most practicable and economicallyadvantageous pathway to replace CNG with hydrogen.

The project is scheduled to run for two years and is being carried out by a consortium of several renownedresearch performers: the DVGW Research Unit at the Engler-Bunte Institute, the Gas Technology Institute inFreiberg (DBI-GTI), the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the think tank Frontier Economics. FVV andDVGW are co-funding the project with a total budget of 560,000 euros. The focus of the research work isinitially on Germany and is to be extended to Europe in the future.
