Skill Development Training Programme on
“Seed Production Technology for Carp, Catfish & Giant Freshwater Prawn”
1st June to 31st August 2018
Organized by Department of Fish Genetics and Reproduction, College of Fisheries, CAU (I),
Lembucherra, Tripura-799210
Funded by: Power Finance Corporation, New Delhi
A three months skill development training program was conducted by the Department of
Fish Genetics and Reproduction at the College of Fisheries, Central Agricultural University
(Imphal), Lembucherra, Tripura for unemployed rural youth of northeast states during 1st June to
31st August 2018. The training program was funded by the Power Finance Corporation, New
Delhi under the CSR activities dedicated to bring social equity, improving quality of life and
education in the rural area by defeating unemployment. Under the guidance of Dr. Pramod Kumar
Pandey (Dean, College of Fisheries, Tripura), this three months duration skill development training
program was conceptualized to train the youth of North East India in breeding and seed production
of all the cultivable fish species. So that they can optimally use their resources for production of
fish seed. The inaugural function of the training was held on 1st June 2018 and the function was
graced by Shri Pranajit Singha Roy, Hon’ble Minister for Agriculture as Chief Guest and Shri
Brishaketu Debbarma, MLA Simna (West Tripura) as Guest of Honour {Photograph Enclosed
(Annexure-I)}. The hon’ble minister Sri Roy stressed the relevance and significance of skill
development trainings for the north-eastern States of India. A total of 28 participants from the six
north eastern states (Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh) were
trained on different aspects of fish seed production {Group Photograph (Annexure-II) and list of
trainee participant enclosed Annexure-III)}.
Carp form the major stake in freshwater aquaculture in India. A significant part of this
training program was dedicated to the seed production of more than six species of both Indian and
exotic carp. Main activities under carp seed production included operation of eco-hatchery for
commercial seed production, hapa breeding for small scale production, nursery rearing to produce
fingerlings and brood stock management. Dr. Himanshu Priyadarshi (Assistant Professor &
Course Director) supervised the brood stock managements and carp hatchery operations while Dr.
Sagar Chandra Mandal (Associate Professor & Head, and course Coordinator) took care of the
nursery managements aspects of the training. {Photographs of different activities enclosed
(Annexure-IV)}.
Freshwater catfish like magur, pabda and singhi, are considered high value
delicacies in this region and are also known for their nutritional and medicinal value. The
participants were trained in the seed production of magur, singhi and pabda by artificial
fertilization of stripped eggs using testis extracts and larval rearing in low cost flow-through
hatchery system. Dr. Anindya Sundar Barman (Assistant Professor & Course Coordinator)
oversaw the training in seed production of catfish. {Photographs of different activities enclosed
(Annexure-V)}. The participants were also trained in giant freshwater prawn seed production using
synthetic seawater, considering the high value of the species to the region and its immense export
potential. Dr. Janmejay Parhi (Assistant Professor & Course Coordinator) looked after the training
on Giant freshwater prawn seed production. {Photographs of different activities enclosed
(Annexure-VI)}.
With the help of the faculty from other departments, training was also imparted on
preparation of nursery pond, soil and water quality analysis and managements, application of
fertilizers as well as preparation of different kinds of larval and grow-out feeds like egg custard,
artemia, floating feed etc. Keeping in view that north-east is a biodiversity hot spot, the participants
were also trained to identify different fish species, and their commercial & conservational
significance. Since, the region is inhabited by several indigenous fish species having high
ornamental value, breeding techniques of some high value ornamental fish was included in
training. They were also trained in the diagnosis and treatment of major diseases of carp, catfish,
and prawn. The trainees were also exposed to economics and marketing principles of seed
production venture to enable the trainees to become successful entrepreneurs in coming days.
Guest lecture from NABARD and Skill Development Board, Tripura were conducted to provide
awareness to the participants on financial support schemes from government agencies. They were
also introduced to the application of ICT and open educational resources (OER) in fisheries. {Copy

VIII)}.
The valedictory function of the training programme was held on 31st August, 2018 and the
function was graced by Shri Narendra Chandra Debbarma, Hon’ble Minister for Revenue and
Fisheries as Chief Guest. Shri Debbarma, congratulated all the participants for successfully
undergoing this training and awarded the certificates to participants {Photograph Enclosed
(Annexure-IX)}. He expressed his happiness at the efforts taken by the college for conducing this
training for the youth of entire north east states and emphasized on the significance of a collective
