FuelOpass
What is FuelOpass?
FuelOpass is a unique identification ring for various kinds of vehicles. It replaces payment- and customer loyalty cards thus enabling cardless fueling.
FuelOpass contains similar information as any traditional payment- and customer loyalty card, which makes Integration to existing systems easy.
FuelOpass can be programmed with other information important to the transport company, such as vehicle type, license plate number, fuel type allowed for each vehicle and so on.
Structure
FuelOpass contains three parts:
Communication ring
Part for securing the chip (screw/glue)
Smart ID chip
Features
• Fast and easy fueling – FUEL AND GO!• Compatible with FuelOmat system• Fits to all kinds of vehicles• Simple and quick installation to any kind of vehicle• Removal prevention: any attempt to remove the ID chip breaks it • Safe against theft and fraud• Encrypted communication and storing of information• Low frequency communication: no interference caused by radio transmitters• Physical disabling of blacklisted ID chips either temporarily (can be restored) or permanently (ID chip destroyed).
Security• Encrypted communication. • Encryption is decoded by a SAM chip (Security Access Module)• SAM chip is read- and write protected.
Road from manufacturing to stations is as follows:
SAM manufacturer
SAM
SAM –chips are industrially manufactured. Each chip is laser-engraved with a unique serial number.
Programming centre
SAM
The supplier programs company specific encryptionkeys to SAM chips, which use the keys to identifyFuelOpass ID chips.
Security
Encrypted contents (DES)
The SAM and FuelOpass ID chips’ contents areprotected with a powerful triple DES-encryption.
SAM
Station Controller
SAMThe SAM chip is installed in the VIT unit at the fueling station.- enables communication between FuelOpass ID chips and station systems.
- Impossible to misuse the FuelOpass ID chip.
Security
FuelOpass in short:
• Each SAM and FuelOpass chip is unique with a permanent identification code which cannot be altered or copied.
• Message Authentication Code (MAC) is sent in the beginning of every fueling session.
• Communication is protected by triple DES encryption.
• FuelOpass chips have removal protection. Any attempt to remove a chip breaks it, making it useless.

FuelOpass ring is installed around the fuel inlet.
Antenna inside the fueling nozzle enables reading the information from the ID chip.
Installation
FuelOpass is very easy to install. The installation procedure does not require any wiring and can be performed under half an hour.
These three steps are all that is needed for starting to use FuelOpass:
1. Ordering of FuelOpass unit.
2. The customer receives the ID chip and/or communication ring.
3. The FuelOpass unit is either installed by the customer or a professional.
FUEL AND GO!
Installation
Here is how the FuelOpass is installed:
The communication coil and ID chip can be secured with;• chemical bonding adhesive• mechanically with a screw
Both ways make the ID chip impossible to remove without destroying the chip.
Installation
Chemical bonding can be done by applying special superglue on the back of the ID chip.
The ID chip is glued on a suitable place near the fuel tank inlet and the glue is let to dry. Attempt to remove the ID chip will destroy it.
Installation
Mechanically most reliable way is to use a special screw for securing the ID chip onto a surface. The screw can only be turned one way.
A suitable place for securing the ID chip is selected and the screw is fastened with the ID chip.
When the screw is in place, again the ID chip cannot be removed without destroying it.
Installation
The ID chip is connected to the communication ring, which is installed around the fuel tank inlet.
Installation
FuelOpass ring is fastened securely using suitable holders.
When the ring is fastened, the installation is done!
Installation
FuelOpass installation in it’s simpliity is complete!
Information from experienced FuelOpass users has proved the system’s functionality and reliability.
Station
Fuel dispensing stations on which FuelOpass is being used are equipped with FuelOmat system.
The needed components to the stations are:
Communication ring on the fuel dispenser’s nozzle.
Station
Security barrier, which galvanically isolates the fuel dispenser nozzle and station electronics from each other.
VIP
VIT
VIT (Vehicle Information Transceiver). Relays information from FuelOpass units to the SCU units and back.VIP (Vehicle Information Processor). Connects FuelOmat system’s components together and enables communication between FuelOmat station systems and the central computer which collects fueling information. VIP is for retail station. For homebases, SCU is ideal.
FuelOpass -projects
Via Rápida (Freeway) (Q2/2000) Repsol oil-company, Spain• Pilot in Valencia and Alecante.• 30 stations• 50.000 FuelOpass customers
Rollout in 2002:• 200 stations• More FuelOpass customers
Other FuelOpass -projects
Connexxion – Largest public transportation company in Holland.• 4.000 busses and 3.000 taxis.• About 20 Home base stations which have VIU45 and FuelOpass in use, simultaneously.
Pohjolan Liikenne Oy – One of the largest transportation companies in Finland. Project started at Q4/01.• 360 busses are being installed FuelOpass and DataLogger units. DataLogger is a special add-on system for FuelOmat, developed by TechnoSmart Oy.• One of the goals is to make a number of oil companies’ stations FuelOmat enabled.• By 2004, all vehicles will be installed with the system (over 1.000 vehicles).
