    ThescienceofrheumatologyhasprogressedenormouslysincethethirdeditionoftheOxfordTextbookofRheumatologywaspublishedin2004.Therehavebeenmajordevelopmentsinallthemajorsubspecialitiesofrheumatologyandrheumatologistsareenjoyingthefruitsofthebiotechnologyrevolution,withacornucopiaofbiologicalagentsinroutineclinicalpracticeorindevelopment.

    Inkeepingwithaneweditorialteamthecontentofthebookhasbeenthoroughlyrevised,whileretainingthebroadstructureofthepreviouseditionswhichwereadistinctivefeatureofthebook.Thenumberofchaptershasincreasedfrom126to173,reflectingtheincreasingbreadthofknowledge.Newchaptershavebeenwrittenreflectingthechangingfaceofrheumatology.Wehaveexpandedtheimagingsectiontoincludeseparatechaptersoneachofthemainmodalities,andchaptersontherapeuticscoverthenewbiologicagentsincludingareasthatweforeseebecomingmainstreamduringthelifeofthebook.

    Electronicbookshavebecomewidespreadsincethelasteditionandinadditiontoaprinteditionweareproducinganonlineversion,whichisnotmerelytheprintversionreproducedbuthasenhancedfunctionalitywithdirectlinkstoreferences,videoimages,andlinksbetweenrelevantsections.TheabilitytousevideoenablesuseofmultisliceMRandCTtobeavailableandrealtimeultrasound.

    WeoweahugedebttotheeditorsofthepreviouseditionsDavidIsenberg,PeterMaddision,PatriciaWoo,DavidGlass,andFerdinandBreedveldwhoassembledandproducedthreesplendideditions.Theyfeltthatthetimehadcome,nearlyadecadeafterthewritingofthethirdedition,thatafresheditorialteamwasneeded.
