FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Welcome back to everyone for 2017. It is great to see everyone well rested and returning to school enthusiastic and excited. We had a very smooth start to the year. All staff and students are ready for another year of learning at Silverton PS. We welcome all the new Foundation students who have started at Silverton this year. They have all settled well into school and are enjoying their learning each day at Silverton. They are very enthusiastic making new friends and actively engaging in their learning and all aspects of school. There are a number of new students in other levels throughout the school and we welcome them also. A big welcome to the following staff members; Mr Tang, Miss Degering, Mrs White, Mr O’Connor, Mr Toovey, Mrs Maryanovsky, Miss Rooks, Ms Kumar, Mr Singleton and Mr Zhi. IT’S NOT OK TO BE AWAY The average absence per student is about one in every 12 school days. That means by the end of their schooling the average student has missed an entire year! The slogan we have adopted is,
“Be on time, be at school; that’s the rule.” It is important for parents to understand that every day a student is away without reason; the absence is costing that child a learning experience. We would like to see a decrease in our absenteeism / lateness rate at Silverton. While we know and expect that there are genuine reasons for students being absent, maybe as a school community this becomes a focus for all of us.

Incursion c
Friday the 10th of February ‘The Human Race’ is a show that gives simple strategies for building skills in conflict resolution, problem solving, assertiveness, kindness and having empathy and respect for others. It challenges children to find out what qualities we need to create positive relationships at school, on-line and in the community and ultimately as citizens of the world. The message is be kind, do your best, play by the rules and never give up. In the junior version, for Foundation to Grade 2, they show a group of girls who have a misunderstanding in the playground which leads to teasing and leaving people out. For the senior version, Grade 3 to 6, the example shown is it happens on-line – it also makes it very clear that you must be 13 to join Facebook. If you do not want your child to attend this incursion, please notify the office on 9795 5033 or at [email protected]

Donation of small plastic bottles Dear Parents, As part of the Science Curriculum in Term One, we are looking at ways to reuse commonly used materials that would otherwise end up in landfill. To assist us in gathering these materials, we are requesting that you save any small plastic bottles and send them to school with your child so we can reuse them in our science learning experiences. There will be collection boxes placed in each Learning Centre for you to deposit these bottles. We thank you for your assistance and look forward to reusing these bottles in a variety of fun ways. Kindest Regards, Emmanuelle Blake & Paula Yates
