SPEECH FINALS
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
Last week students participated in a very
wide range of activities, across just as wide a range of locations. The collage later in
the Newsletter gives you a small glimpse of the range of undertakings. I think that every student who took
part, be they from Year 7 or Year 13, will tell you what
a tremendously worthwhile experience they have had.
Thank you to the parents who assisted. Thank you to the staff who organised and led these activities. Thank
you to the students, who stepped out of their comfort zones and showed the true meaning of our school
values. Effort, respect, curiosity and integrity were
demonstrated through student conduct over the week. I thoroughly enjoyed my week away with the Year 12
group on Stewart Island.
What fantastic opportunities our students are exposed
to. I know of nowhere else in the country where every student, at every year level, has the chance to
challenge themselves through the school curriculum in this way. And not just once, but twice. This certainly
sets us apart from other schools in New Zealand. Fiordland College is definitely a place where all can
thrive.

Congratulations to Lucy Holmes-Crombie who
won the Northern and Western Area Primary Speech Finals yesterday.
Lucy’s speech was about “child abuse” and has qualified
her for the Southland finals.
TRI TOURNAMENT
Next week on Tuesday 22 August we have the annual
inter-schools’ event between Fiordland College, Northern Southland and Aparima College.
Travel uniform is black trackies with one of the
official school tops. This is also to be worn at
the afternoon tea and Prizegiving. No hoodies or other tops please. Thanks and good luck.
ST JOHN’S NATIONAL COMPETITION
Well done to Jacob Lewis who travelled to
Whanganui in the last break to compete in the NZ St John Cadets Finals.
The four day finals were contested by 12 regional
teams of six, and Jacob’s team WON, against the best
in New Zealand.
The team’s skills were tested over a huge range of disciplines including first aid, communication and drills.

teamed up with her former school team to place 6th in the National finals of Agrikids. Agrikids is
a school version of “Young Farmer of the Year”.
Zoe’s team won the Otago/Southland Champs to qualify

Last week Mr Excell mentioned our new FiNSCoL
brochure in his weekly Te Anau School Newsletter
comment. I would like to draw this to your attention now
too and reiterate what Mr Excell said. Each of our
families will receive a copy of the brochure next week.
The brochure is an outline of FiNSCoL. Over the next six months FiNSCoL will be more visible and our goals more closely worked on. Because of this, now is a good time to summarise what FiNSCoL is and what the vision is for our group. Our schools plan to work more closely together to meet our goals which are based around boys’ writing, transitions and the Arts. With more collaboration between schools we hope to achieve better outcomes for students while having a more cohesive education system in our region. Throughout the nine schools we have between 70 and 80 teachers. With this number of professionals working together the level of skills and knowledge of the teachers is deep and broad. Working together will allow this expertise to be shared across the region.
HOMEWORK CENTRE
Next Wednesday 23 August we are re-establishing a
Homework Centre.
Please see flyer on page 4 for full details.
YEAR 7/8 NETBALL TOURNIE
Over the past two weeks our Year 7 and Year 8 Netball
teams have both competed in the Southland Primary Netball Championships.
Our Year 7s finished 23rd against teams from every
other primary school and college in Southland.
The Year 8s came 34th in their tournament.
The feedback from both coaches was very encouraging
about the girls’ teamwork, attitude and positivity.
