From Kirk Leoni, Chair, Board of TrusteesLast year was one of challenge and transition for Canterbury Shaker Village.
We entered 2017 with financial concerns, a backlog of deferred maintenance,
and a critical need to address the long-term viability of this nationally-
significant landmark. The year concluded with a reinvigorated board, an
updated strategic plan, and encouraging progress in many areas. Our new
Executive Director’s first year delivered amazing progress with strategic
planning, community outreach and restructuring operations for improved
results. I am so grateful for the energy she has brought to the Village.
Credit goes first to our deeply-committed Board of Trustees and Board of
Corporators. Thanks go to our members and donors as well, who provide
such critical support to maintain the Village and assure its vibrancy. Our
dedicated staff and volunteers worked hard to meet our shared goals,
and the Canterbury community rallied to support the Village as well.
Working together, we have a bright future.

Canterbury Shaker Village FinancialsThe Village’s annual budget is in the range of $1 million, modest for an organization with 29 buildings and 700 acres to main-tain, extensive collections to care for, and a full agenda of visitor services and events. Although the Village has a diversified income base, the lack of an endowment of reasonable size that could yield some annual support for operations has been a significant handicap. Increasing the Village’s endowment from its present $550,000 value by means of both current and planned gifts is a major focus in the near term.
• Adding three new Trustees: Louis Kaucic, Jean Halloran, and Pat Findlen have added strength and vitality to our governing Board;
• Maintaining buildings: the Visitor Center and Laundry have been painted, part of the Laundry has been re-roofed, the Cart Shed has been stabilized, and numerous other infrastructure repairs have been addressed;
• Landscaping and trailwork: the walking trails and various garden areas have been improved thanks to generous volunteer labor;
• Creating new specialty tours and programs to expand our audience and demonstrate the relevance of Shaker ideals today;
• Re-opening our important collection of Shaker documents and related materials to scholars and researchers. Digitized versions of many of our historic photographs were made available on-line;
• Attracting new sources of financial support: donations are on the rise in all areas including endowment contributions, and our annual auction and other fund-raising events. We launched a program to sell personalized bricks that will form a new patio at the Horse Barn, and our new Legacy Challenge has resulted in pledged gifts and bequests of $500,000.
2017 Highlights
During 2018 we look forward to continued progress toward a sustainable future for the Village. Our focus will be on these goals from our updated three-year strategic plan:
• Making the Village a welcoming and attractive place, including continued painting and roofing, phase one construction of the Horse Barn patio, continued attention to the grounds, and additional training for all staff.
• Expanding our facility rentals program to generate additional income and introduce new audiences to the site while maintaining the quality of our existing visitor experience.
• Offering updated thematic tours of the Village to bring the Shakers to life and share the relevance of their ideals.
• Adding and replacing signage, making the Village more welcoming and accessible.
• Identifying new partners and strengthening existing partnerships to expand our outreach, share the Village’s assets, and extend the ways in which we accomplish our mission.
• Offering on-site housing for garden volunteers as well as our museum interns.
• Exploring the potential for year-round arts programming, including an artist-in-residence.
• Planning for upgraded storage to improve our long-term stewardship of the collections and the accessibility of our archival materials.
• Continuing to expand our base of financial support for the Village.
