ROLES
GOAL SETTING
Although the Board of Directors approves the leveraging of impact investing, it is supportive to have a nimble process for decision making in order to adapt or respond more readily to opportunities. Larger foundations with many levels of bureaucracy may have challenges.
Being Flexible
Leveraging resources such as the Global Impact Investing Network and Impact Base, Investor’s Circle, and/or Toniic will help a foundation gain exposure and connection to viable transactions. Develop a process to standardize how you evaluate potential companies (e.g. due diligence and approval of term sheets).
Working with the Right Experts
Decide if financial return or potential impact is most important. Adopt an investment policy statement with experts to further clarify the portfolio you will pursue.
Decide What is Most Important
Decide if you would like to be an investor, or partner with investors/stakeholders to leverage more resources for investments. Perhaps the role is better suited as a capacity builder, where you provide grants, technical assistance etc .
Foundation Roles in Impact Investing
Decide your long term goals and start slowly. Some foundations such as the Triple EEE Foundation have found success in moving their entire corpus to impact investing activity. It took them seven years.
