Peter Slipper still to face court
Mr Peter Slipper former MP for the Federal seat of Fisher has lost his attempt to have dishonesty charges against him in respect to dishonest-ly using his government cabcharge card thrown out of court because of mental illness
Mr Slipper has pleaded not guilty to the three charges he dishonestly used about $1000 worth of Cab-charge vouchers in 2010
The matter has been set down to again appear at the ACT Magis-trates Court on July 21st 2014
Prostate cancer accounts for ap-proximately 30 of cancers diag-nosed each year in Australian men It is the second most common cause of cancer death after lung cancer It has been estimated that around 120000 Australian men are living with prostate cancer and it is predicted that the number will increase to 267000 by 2017
Those statistics are very confront-ing but they are real
On Sunday July 8th between9am and 1pm there will be a display of great muscle cars on display at the Maleny Show grounds
There will be Holden HSVs Ford FPVs vintage and classic muscle cars hot rods and powerful mo-torbikes It is a real petrol-head heaven
It will be a great opportunity to either show off their ldquomusclerdquo cars
or just lust over the more than 700 cars and motor bikes on display Included in this impresssinv lineup will be the Mustang made famous by Australian motor racing legend Allan Moffat
One of the organisers Colin Sinclair said that last year over $6000 was raised on the day and this year it is hoped that a whole lot more can be raised to go towards research into this disease
Men over age 50 or 40 with a fami-ly history of prostate cancer should talk to their doctor about testing for prostate cancer
Early detection means that there is every likelihood that the disease can be checked and stopped from becoming a major cause for con-cern

Take care when shopping on lineThe number of people shopping online is growing every day Online shopping is growing and nothing is going to stop that growth as more people become more competent with using the internet Online shop-ping is said by many to be convenient and time saving
There are some risks though that are not as evident when shopping at a brick and morter store Once payment has been made for goods ordered online there may be little prospect of tracing the identity of the seller should the goods not be delivered
It is important to understand the risks involving online shopping and then taking the appropriate action to reduce those risks Basically this comes down to understanding with whom you are trading and where you can contact in case of a problem
If you have been caught by a fraudster when shopping on line contact the Fraud and Cyber Crime Group which is a section of the Queensland Police Service on 3364 6622 or visit their web site athttpwwwpoliceqldgovauprogramscscpfraudcomplaintshtm
Keeping LeftOn single-lane roads drivers must stay as close as practical to the left side of the road
When the speed limit is 90 kmh or more on multi-lane roads you must not drive in the right-hand lane unless you are
overtaking turning right making a U-turn avoiding an obstacle driving in congested traffic
It is an offence to drive in the right lane if none of the above criteria are occurring
This rule also applies to a road with a speed limit of 80 kmh or less if there is a KEEP LEFT UN-LESS OVERTAKING sign

Maleny Bowls Club gets lights
The Maleny Bowls Club joins other bowls clubs throughout the Sun-shine Coast with the installation of lights to allow the playing of bowls at night
Four towers of lights were installed during June in anticipation of some warmer weather to allow the play-ing of bowls later into the after-noon and into the night
Club spokesperson Les Bennett said that the lights were made possible through a grant of approximately $30000 from the Gaming Fund
The installation of lights comes after last yearrsquos installation of an ar-tificial green thus providing a more flexible playing arrangement

Has anyone else beside me wondered what the coal-mining billionaire Mr Clive Palmer and the climate change campaigner Al Gore have in common as they stood side by side in Canberra to announce that Mr Palmerrsquos party would help repeal the carbon tax - as long as itrsquos replaced by a globally-linked emissions trading scheme
Mr Palmer being such a large sup-plier and exported of the dreaded coal that is said to be causing so much of the earthrsquos pollution problem and Mr Gore being such a major campaigner for carbon pricing and global action on cli-mate change
Am I being a conspiracy theo-rist or is this question a lot more about money and greed than purely pollution problems
In view of that amazing press conference and the fact that Clive Palmer has said that he would move to create an emissions trading scheme with a ldquozero ratedrdquo carbon price attached until the rest of the world also has that scheme
And with the two above men-tioned people standing together one just has to wonder what is the real situation and the motives of the people involved

The Maleny RSL Hall is well known to Maleny residents This important community asset is used by many Maleny communities not only the Maleny RSL Sub BranchAlthough the building looks as though it has always been in that location it has in fact only been there since 1946 Over the years this hall has had many r e n o v a t i o n s a n d h a s n o w b e e n modernised to suit todayrsquos uses Mostly that work has been done by local v o l u n t e e r s a s w a s t h e o r i g i n a l constructionThe building in fact was used during WW11 in M a r y b o r o u g h and after the w a r i t w a s transported to M a l e n y i n p i e c e s a n d rebuilt to to be used by the Maleny RSL Sub - Branch But for now back to this later as we are getting a bit ahead of ourselvesThe land on which the Maleny Returned and Services League sub-branch building stands was originally part of a parcel of land purchased by Francis Dunlop He was granted title to 160 acres to build a homestead in 1880 The land was returned to the crown in 1896In 1938 a memorandum of agreement was drawn up between Mr William Burnett and the three trustees of the then RSSAILA The agreement called for the trustees to maintain the land in a clean condition not sell the land without prior written approval of Mr Burnett and pay a yearly rental of one shilling for ten yearsThe Burnett Family at the time were the licensees of the Maleny Hotel and the land on which the RSL now stands on was a

On 28 January 1946 building forms were obtained from the Department of War and Industry for the purchase of a building from the Air Force This meant the RSL Maleny Sub-Branch would have a new homeThe building purchased for the RSL had been built at
an Air Force training camp at Maryborough and was used as a gymnasium and cinemaWhen the building was purchased a group of Maleny RSL members under the direction of Maleny registered builder Viv Layt travelled to Maryborough and physically dismantled the building Each piece of timber was individually numberedThe building was then loaded onto a railway wagon and transported to Landsborough Railway Station From there it was transported to Maleny by Watson Brothers Transport

Maleny RSL Hall ldquoopenedrdquo
Following a herculean effort by many Maleny locals mainly Mr George Svensen Mr W (Bill) Musk Mr Leo Clancy and brothers Les (Nugget) and Wally Sinclair Mr Terry Larney and Mr John Fogarty were responsible for the major work of rebuilding the HallThe new Returned Soldiers Sailors and Airmens Imperial League of Australia building was officially opened on 27 August 1948 In 1948 a Diggers Ball was held to celebrate the opening The Ball was held annually until the mid 1960sSince that early beginning there have been many additions and upgrades dont to the old hall to ensure that it remains a valuable community asset
With thanks to past Maleny R S L member Frank Beattie for much of the information contained here
Today we take for granted the Maleny RSL Hall and the part that it plays in community events especially memorial services for the various service groupsIn the 1980rsquos the building was becoming neglected and lost to community events through a lack of community useThen a group of Maleny ex-service people conspired to bring the hall back into the community through a program of maintenance and community useMany of those community members are still within the Maleny community and must be proud to see the results of those early work projects that they completedOne of the first tasks gave the hall a coat of paint through the services of the Maleny Rotary Club This helped to preserve the hall and gave back a coat of respectability Included in this task was the total replacement of the internal ceiling in an effort to make it more comfortable in the cooler weather as it was like being inside a refrigerator in winter
Then came the placement of steps at the front to the original film projection box This was completed so that a military
museum was able to be placed in the upstairs area This included an outside display of a field gun
Maleny RSL Hall has many uses
Apart from countless RSL ceremonial and Rembrance Days over the past 60 years the Maleny RSL Hall has seen movies theatre plays bingo balls Kids Club neighbourhood centre Maleny markets Maleny Bridge Club Tai Kwondo dance clubs childrens theatre fitness clubs and public meetings all using the halls facilities and contributing to the cultural life of Maleny and district
It has become a very important part of the Maleny community as it is regularly used by many community organisations as well as for private functionsIt is also home to the Maleny Bridge Club who meet in the rooms under the building at the rear and previously home to a Military Museum before it moved to Maryborough
This just shows what a community of like minded people can do for the betterment of the community when they work towards a ldquocommon goalrdquoCongratulations to all involved from the first volunteers in the 1940rsquos through to those who still work today to ensure that the Maleny District has the appropriate community facilities

Review suggests gutting ABC Radio and television
A review of the ABC radio and tele-vision network has made a number of significant changes to the organ-isation in an effort to save money
The review suggests that the ABC consider amongst other matters
bull Charge fees for iView
bull Sell ABC studios in each state
bull Dump digital radio channels
bull Increase advertising on SBS
bull Get out of internal production
bull Shut or downgrade a number of studios throughout Australia
Australians have become used to the ABC television and radio net-
work as being ironically Australian and feel that they already pay for the service provided through taxa-tion
Already the ABC has outsourced many of their programs Changes as outlined in this review would fundamentally change the whole manner of operating by the ABC

Hinterland Connect Bus saga continuesOnly a few days ago we were celebrating that it appeared that the Hinter-land Connect Bus service was to be renewed for a further twelve months Now it appears that that celebration may have been a bit early as the Sun-shine Coast Regional Council has now made a decision that the service would only be approved at this time for a further six months
This decision was taken not by a meeting of all councillors and worse it was taken behind closed doors At an Ordinary Council Meeting on June 18th Sunshine Coast hinterland councillor Jenny McKay tried to overturn the decision
Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson had previously advised the State Transport Department that the council was prepared to fund the bus service for only another six months at a cost of $75000 This is in spite of the council still holding $54 million in unused revenue generated through the $20 Public Transport Levy over the years
Local Councillor Jenny McKay said the hinterland bus service was only ldquotwo people shortrdquo of meeting the quota as set out in the trial period She believes that the service is being hampered by poor timetable deci-sions that have now been addressed
It now becomes more important that passenger numbers continue to grow to ensure that the service can be further extended for the full year so the effect of new timetable changes can be tested and the service contin-uance can be assured
Forum about ldquoGetting a grantrdquoThere are many grants available to community organisations and sporting clubs provided to ensure that that organisationrsquos services are efficiently available to members of the community
Sometimes it appears that some organisations are luckier than others when it comes to obtaining those grants Often it is simply a matter of knowing just what is needed when applying for the various grants
Over the years local State Member of Parliament Mr Andrew Powell has been able to assist many community groups in applying for State Government grants
To further assist groups in applying for grants he will be holding information forums with State Government grants officers on hand to provide advice and answer questions
The Maleny Grants Forum will be held on Wednesday 30th July between 11am and 12pm at the Maleny Community Centre 23 Maple Street Maleny
Due to venue restrictions community groups are asked to nominate two members only from their group to attend the forum
For further information or to register contact the office of Andrew Powell MP on (07) 5435 2013 OR email glasshouseparliamentqldgovau

For further information or to register contact the office of Andrew Powell MP on (07) 5435 2013 OR email glasshouseparliamentqldgovau

an Air Force training camp at Maryborough and was used as a gymnasium and cinemaWhen the building was purchased a group of Maleny RSL members under the direction of Maleny registered builder Viv Layt travelled to Maryborough and physically dismantled the building Each piece of timber was individually numberedThe building was then loaded onto a railway wagon and transported to Landsborough Railway Station From there it was transported to Maleny by Watson Brothers Transport

Further information on the forums will be provided upon registration
