NHS/NJHS A Trip to 1920’s Harlem
Learning outside the classroom
On March 2, 2016, students in grades 6-12
enjoyed a day of visual, auditory, and
kinesthetic lessons outside of the building.
Students in grades 6-8 had a day of fun at
Sky Zone, while high school students
enjoyed a tour of Virginia State University.
Another set of high school students
traveled to Washington, DC to tour such
historical sites as the Pentagon, the
Washington Monument, the Vietnam
Memorial and the Martin Luther King
Memorial. Afterward the group was given
the opportunity to witness the
changing of the
Guard at the
Tomb of the
Unknown Soldier,
while viewing the
Eternal Flame of
the graves of President Kennedy and his
family along with his brother Bobby.
FMA’s own Drama class took us on a trip
back to 1920’s Harlem with live
performances, dramatic reenactments,
and dancing. We got the opportunity to
hear the sweet sounds of Billie Holiday
and Cab Calloway, inspirational words by
Langston Hughes and see the energetic
moves from Dorothy Dandridge. Middle
school cadets showed us how to foxtrot
and the jazz band kept our heads moving
and toes tapping throughout the entire
program
An astounding 58 students have been nominated
for the National Honor Society or National
Junior Honor Society.
Applicants are accepted based on merits of
academics, leadership, service, and character.
All applicants have at least a 3.2 GPA. The
induction ceremony will take place in the near
future.

Seniors take on Philly
During spring break, 21 students along
with 6 chaperones, will be traveling to
the city of brotherly love (Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania) to take in sights and
bond as a class. These students have
participated in multiple fundraisers in
order to acquire funds
for this
wonderful trip. Students
will stay steps away from
historical landmarks in Philadelphia.
While in Philly (as the locals say) students
will have the opportunity to view several
attractions on the Hop-On, Hop-Off City
Tour. Popular sites such the Liberty Bell,
the Betsy Ross house, and the Philadelphia
Museum of Art’s famed “Rocky Steps” are
just a few stops on the 1.5 hour tour. The
students will also get the opportunity to
visit the famous South Street, and cheer on
the Philadelphia 76ers as they
take on the Charlotte Hornets.
These seniors will also receive
the opportunity to tour Temple
University. The trip will be
culminated with a day of fun at
the Philadelphia Aquarium.
