Fracking, Earthquakes and waterBy Team DRaymond Dizon, Servando Aguirre, Miguel Sanchez, Dejada PoolerSCI/256August 19, 2015
Issues with Fracking
• Dangerous• Water waste• Toxic chemicals • Tanker trucks • Contaminates water wells• Environmental hazard
Continue• The water brought in is mixed
with sand and chemicals to create fracking fluid. Approximately 40,000 gallons of chemicals are used per fracturing.
• Left Behind• Only 30-50% of the fracturing
fluid is recovered, the rest of the toxic fluid is left in the ground and is not biodegradable.
Fracking and increased Earthquakes• Dangerous Earthquakes• Oil fracking Boom• Our unstable Grounds • Example of (1989 )Earthquakes
Fracking on the water system in Cali
Droughts Increasing
oil wastewater
The Struggle
Fracking in CaliforniaHow does fracking contaminate our water?
Where is fracking being done in California? How does fracking contaminate our water?
Solutions for Fracking in Cali• Speaking out • Given the earthquake risk linked to wastewater disposal• People being at risk
VIDEOS• Fracking offshore• https://youtu.be/epBZmv__kkY• Earthquake tidal wave• https://youtu.be/pVW1oBfQGOI• Global earthquake in Haiti• https://youtu.be/CcFVxl8oclY
DOGGR
Policies• Strict Design Standards• Clean Air Act 1963• Clean Water Act of 1972• Safe Water Drinking Act 1974
Negative Effect• Water droughts• Noise pollution• Increase pollution • Spread of toxins
Positive Effect• Access to gas and oil• Improved air quality • Decrease Dependency on
Foreign Oil
Challenges to Policy• UNEP• Drop in Oil• Losing Jobs • Equipment Standards
Public Opinion• Support for
Fracking• Appose Fracking • Republicans vs.
Democrats
Conclusion• In reality racking in California is getting worse by the minute danger is definitely considered to be
on a high alerts of watching out for earthquakes and more , meaning that this would turn into a high increase of underground injection oil as well as wastewater production . By Extracting oil from the the Monterey Shale this would raise as high trillion gallons of unhealthy wastewater, In California this issue would cause major damage to human society .
• The United States is very much involved in oil business meaning that oil fracking “Rise” in California could set the risk bar factor off it’s meter subjecting to the risk of a shocking earthquake disaster in some of the best well known cities and states . (2015. Fracking Boom Would Increase California's Earthquake Danger, Report )
• While there has been serious threats to air and water and the health of human beings , our emerging and us as the people in the world could be at risk of induced seismicity this would also be considered a another reason for a pause on fracking in California and other states as well .
• We as the people living in California are at a serious and major risk for induced earthquake. The oil industry targets over a hundred of wastewater injections that are very close to faults that can erupt without a drop of a dime and may hit as close to Bakersfield California and Los Angeles California population centers.
• Halting might be just be of one and many ways of fracking in California to name some solutions earthquake risk factors to wastewater disposal, as well as unconventional oil production’s other environmental risks, is to halt acidizing, hydraulic fracturing, and other serious gas and oil recovery. (2015 , Halting Fracking in California: The Time Is Now. )
• Allot of information coming from scientific research pertains to fracking being a very serious issue in California health of the people . Fracking operations could pertain to the use of any chemicals .Certain chemicals could play a big role the environment meaning that health threats will generate even more throughout the communities if we as the people and the government do something about these factors and as soon as possible .(2015 , Halting Fracking in California: The Time Is Now. )
