Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
This weekend the Gospel invites us to reflect on the outpouring of God's grace to all people of good will who search for Him.
In the Gospel a Canaanite woman comes to Jesus to have her daughter healed from a demon who is tormenting her. At first Jesus does "not answer her at all." After the mother persists in seeking his help, Jesus seems to convey the message that his mission is to "the lost sheep of the house of Israel." The exchange that follows between our Lord and the woman might seem to us as an attack on the woman's background - that she is different (i.e. "It is not fair to take the children's food and throw it to the dogs.") But when we look closer to Jesus' response, we realize that he is pushing the woman to look closely to who he is - that he is the long expected Messiah. We are told that she responds with great faith and Jesus gives her what she seeks - "her daughter was healed instantly". Like the woman in the Gospel we too are called to have a "great faith", so that our petitions can be heard.
What is it that you are praying for? Who are you praying for? I encourage you to be like the woman in our Gospel and seek the crumbs that fall from the Lord's table of Grace. If we have faith, then we will notice that even the smallest crumbs of Grace will provide for the needs we seek.
Blessings,
Fr. Liborio

Learning from the Saints
St. Bernard
The situation in Lebanon is dire. At least 154 people died in the explosion and 5,000 were injured – those numbers are expected to rise over the coming days. The explosion also destroyed vital food stores and left 300,000 people homeless (representing roughly 12 per cent of the city’s population). Five hundred hospital beds, as well as important medical supplies needed for the country’s COVID-19 response, were also damaged in the blast.
At this time, we ask the faithful to please donate to the Lebanon relief effort, if they are able.
Those wishing to help may do so in the following ways:
• Online through the Archdiocese of Toronto website (click on the “Donate Now” button at the top of the page): www.archtoronto.org
• By phone through the Development Office – 416-934-3411
• Through the parish, making cheques payable to: Name of Parish – Lebanon Relief Effort – Disaster
The Archdiocese of Toronto will send donations to the Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA), a papal agency with extensive on-the-ground networks in Lebanon.

Quotes of St. Bernard
• “Rest is in Him alone. Man knows no peace in the world; but he has no disturbance when he is with God.”
• “There are those who seek knowledge for the sake of knowledge; that is Curiosity. There are those who seek knowledge to be known by others; that is Vanity. There are those who seek knowledge in order to serve; that is Love.”
Doctor of the Church, founder of the Abbey , one of the fathers of the
Cistercians, patron of beekeepers. St Bernard of Clairvaux, whose
liturgical feast occurs on 20 August, travelled all the roads of Europe,
fighting heresy and defending the Pope and the Church.
THE FOUR GRADES OF LOVE
Love of oneself for oneself
Love of God for love of self
Love of God for God
Love of self for God
ST. BERNARD, ABBOTT AND DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH
When asked what they should say in prayer the Lord gives his disciples the “Our Father.” This prayer is considered a gift from the Lord and one that we should especially turn to in times of crisis. This
series will go line by line through the prayer highlighting what it meant to Jesus’ first century audience and what it means for us today.

The story of Catholic saint Maximilian Kolbe (1894-1941), who volunteered to die in place of a stranger in the Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz. On 10 October 1982 Pope John Paul II canonized Father Kolbe
and declared him a martyr of charity. The Catholic Church venerates him as the patron saint of amateur-radio operators, of drug addicts, of political prisoners, of families, of journalists, of prisoners, and of the pro-life movement.

requires us to be builders of relationships

the newness that the kingdom of God wishes to

For it is a kingdom of forgiven sinners called

And Jesus answered and said to them, “Truly I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and it will. If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.” Matthew 21:21-22
