AVODA ARAVIT (ARAB LABOR)
Comedy-drama television series
Israel, 2007
Producer: Danny Paran
(Participating in the Forum)
Director: Roni Ninio
Writer: Sayed Kashua
Language: Arabic/Hebrew with English
subtitles
Amjad is an Arab journalist in Israel. In order to mingle with the cool Israeli crowd,
Amjad is willing to lie, flatter and conceal all of his Arab traits. Meanwhile, he
vehemently denounces the suffering of Arabs at public congresses. Avoda Aravit
explores the daily conflicts faced by Arabs as they struggle to integrate along with
their own values and traditions.
“…A groundbreaking TV Show that finds humor in sharing a homeland.”
The Chicago Tribune
“Kashua has managed to barge through cultural barriers and bring an Arab point of
view into the mainstream of Israeli entertainment.”
The New York Times
“Sayed Kashua, a noted satirist, offers a wry take on the challenges and foibles of an
Arab family loosely based on his own.”
The Los Angeles Times

They may never become stars, but that doesn’t dampen the lively imagination of four
Arab boys whose fantasies clash with the realities of their life in Riyadh on a daily
basis. Almost is a perfect microcosm of the issue at hand. The creators of the series
claim that it deals with the way in which cultural police discourage young dreamers
from aspirations that represent a threat to the Arab society.
“Almost is almost as daring as it wants its audience to be. Rather than transgressing
unwanted boundaries outright, the filmmakers say they hope that just getting the
series made and non-chalantly pushing the hand-scripted linen envelope will serve
as inspiration enough to the Saudi people. i.e. It’s not what the show is about, but the
fact that we can make a show at all.”

Directors: Hagai Levi, Nir Bergman,

Writer: Ori Sivan

A half-hour drama, BeTipul focuses on a therapist who is calm, smooth, insightful,
and non confrontational with his patients, yet who turns into a testy, insecure and
seething individual when he confronts his own shrink. In 2007, the American cable
network HBO decided to order 40 new episodes, which were adapted to create the
series In Treatment.
“In Treatment is not merely another great drama series – it is pure brilliance that
touches genius in a global aspect... A true masterpiece - The most daring, innovative
drama series in Israeli TV history that can stand alongside “ Six Feet Under” and “ The
Sopranos.“
Rating Magazine – weekly entertainment guide
“The closest thing to literature to be found nowadays on TV... In addition to all its
merits, “ In Treatment“ can add yet another one: Addictive. The most exciting television
project of the year.“
Ma’ariv, daily newspaper
“Outstanding television, a challenging format and an excellent writing team.“

Director: Allith Hajo
Writer: Najib Nusair and

Language: Arabic, with simultaneous
French translator on location
Over one third of the total urban population in the Arab world – 57 million people
- live in “haphazard“ neighborhoods, informal districts and settlements. The story
of Al-Intizar revolves around a Robin Hood character and a seedy journalist, both
sons of these neighborhoods. A story of ordinary people struggling to escape urban
poverty, Al-Intizar reflects the enduring social commitment of Syrian drama.
Christa Salamandra will be participating in the Forum. Al-Intizar forms the centerpiece
of the book she’s currently writing - an ethnography of Syrian television drama
production.

INFOS Al-IntIzAr By CHRISTA SALAMANDRA
Al-IntIzArA story of ordinary people struggling to escape urban poverty, Waiting reflects the
Syrian drama industry’s enduring social commitment.
Waiting was broadcast on leading pan-Arab satellite stations such as MBC and
Infinity, gaining an enthusiastic global following and substantial critical success. The
series’ depiction of struggles in poor urban areas contrasts sharply with romantic
historical and folkloric themes currently popular in Arab drama. Through works like
Waiting, Syrian drama preserves the Arab world”s social conscience in an age of
commercial nostalgia. As Samira so forcefully reminds us, the shantytown dwellers,
and by extension all of us, deserve better.
The series was produced in 2006 by al-’Arab li Intaj and Muwasasat al-’Arabiyya li
al-Intaj al-Fanni/Wa’il Suwaydani, and directed by Laith Hajjo, best known for the
biting satirical comedy sketch series Spotlight (Buq“at Daw”) and his hard hitting
debut drama Behind Bars Khalf al-Qudban of 2005. Both these works, along with
Waiting, reflect Hajjo’s deft hand with social critique and readiness to treat sensitive
issues. Eminent art director George Lutfi Khuri lent a cinematic quality to the series’
stark social realism. Taher Mamelli”s plaintive, jazz-inflected musical score enhanced
its emotional force.
Two of Syria’s most highly regarded screenwriters, journalist Najeeb Nusair and
novelist Hassan Sami Yussif, wrote the script. After a decade of screenwriting, the
pair has garnered a reputation for artistic depth (‘umq). Nusair and Yussef share
and an affinity with and concern for the shantytown, or “haphazard neighborhood”
(al-hara al-ashwa”iyah) as it is known in Arabic, which serves as the series’ setting.
Waiting required months of filming in narrow, broken down alleyways and tiny
impoverished houses, as on-location filming distinguishes Syrian TV drama from
its longer-established Egyptian counterpart. The series’ closeness to lived reality,
to ethnographic detail, emerged from its creators’ intense interactions with real-
life shantytown dwellers, and is reflected in small touches of gesture, makeup, and
décor.
The story of Waiting revolves around a Robin Hood figure and a low-level journalist,
both sons of Dweila“a a dilapidated settlement on the outskirts of Damascus. Here
Taim Hassan’s “Abbud, a foundling whose house the camera never visits, robs clothing
from boutiques in the city’s wealthy districts and distributes it among his neighbors in
the dead of night. Mysterious, unmoored, at once everywhere and nowhere, ’Abbud
obeys his own honor code, and takes big brotherly interest in adolescent Raja (Ahmad
Lababidi).
Journalist Wa’il (Bassam Kusa), Raja’s father, remains loyal to the low-paying state
newspaper; his wife, schoolteacher Samira (Yara Sabri) urges him to try al-Jazeera.
Wa’il waxes romantic about neighborhood’s goodness and humanity; Samira
complains of its dirt and danger, a position the series” creators share, and underscore
in its dramatic turning point: while playing soccer in the Dweila’a ’s only available
clearing—a rubble-strewn lot at the edge of a busy highway—the couple”s youngest
son Malik (Laith Qarnit) is struck by a minivan and blinded.
Duped by a myth of departure, most characters are waiting to leave a neighborhood,
and a state of being, they perceive as a mere way station to a better life; most, it is
implied, never will. This frustrating limbo symbolizes what Waiting’s creators see as
the Arab condition.
