Once again, it is with great pleasure that I wish the Forth Valley Open Studios artists and makers a very successful week ahead. To the many visitors, I wish a splendid adventure and hope you will enjoy meeting many of the artists and discussing their ideas and techniques. This is such a special opportunity, too, for the artists to see a public reaction to their creativity.
In an age of mass production, to which we are all subjected, what is made by hand becomes very special indeed.
We should all thank Avril Nicol and her team for the effi cient organisation and administration of the Open Studios event; without them the event would not happen. The artists who are participating deserve our thanks, too, for the same reason.
I am very pleased to tell you that this year there are 140 artists taking part, and also that Strathcarron Hospice, Denny will be exhibiting the artworks of their patients.
There will be three POP UP exhibitions at three different locations: the Tolbooth Gallery in Stirling; the Forth Valley Royal Hosptial at Larbert and at the Makers Gallery and Bistro in Alloa. These will be showing simultaneously.
Well! What more can I say!!!! Except that the show must go on, so please, let us all enjoy wonderful June and a celebration of our gifts!!!

Welcome
Forth Valley Open Studios is centered on its talented artists and makers who welcome the public in to their studios and workspaces. We cannot thank you enough for your support over the past six years. It’s also a great pleasure to have many new and returning artists participate this year.
We have introduced a Forth Valley Art Guide section to the brochure and website, where we are supporting and promoting year round exhibitions, events and workshops in the area. We hope visitors to the area during the nine day event will return to attend these events later in the year. Hope you have a fantastic time!

Down to last year’s success, we are once more opening our doors. The enthusiasm for the so-cial enterprise aspect of Wool-n-Woods work was overwhelming. The bags continue to be made from wool sourced in Scotland and combined with the African fabrics and wood-en buttons. The knitting needles are progress-ing well and the Malawi artisans continue to produce some lovely items. Come and see us again.

I have been an artist and designer for many years and now I’m developing my attention to painting Scottish landscapes using oils. My inspiration comes from the Scottish Colourist particularly Francis Cadell. The seasons light of Scottish Landscapes are beautiful, the scenery awe inspiring. I try to refl ect this in my paintings. Please call in for a chat and tea, it would be lovely to meet you.

I paint in a farmed landscape where the un-tamed edge is never far away. Control is tem-porary. Cut grass grows, the unused footpath eventually becomes impassable, buildings decay when left untended and nature takes its course – towards the wild. The constant change of light and sky is an inspiration and a reminder of renewal. Works in oil pastel, acrylic paint and mixed media.

Close to my home lies the North Common, an area of uncultivated land separating village gardens from the fi elds beyond. It is colonised by native plants - many are the same “weeds” which as a gardener, I constantly battle against, but which as an artist, I fi nd both fas-cinating and beautiful. These few untamed acres provide precious habitat for many wild creatures, and endless inspiration for me.

I create various pieces in most mediums, oil, acrylic, watercolour, pen, ink, and mixed media. My work covers sea and landscapes, abstracts and fi gurative work. I strive to cre-ate a connection between a painting and the viewer, focusing not just on view, but on the atmosphere mood or emotion. I carry out private and corporate commissions, as well as exhibiting in select galleries.

After years of working with paint and pencil I moved from Denmark to Scotland and were immediately fascinated by the colours found in the Scottish Highland. One late night the idea of twintage was born. Tweed with a con-temporary twist. So I am now sewing my way through layers of tweed or drawing lines with my needle or pen. At my studio you will fi nd colourful paintings and woolen plant pots.

I graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in June 2014 and I am keen to continue, expand and explore the ideas that developed during my last year at college. The starting point for my work is usually ‘place’ and as I build up in layers each one informs the next so that the completed piece can be quite abstract and at other times less so. Each painting is like a journey of discovery.
