EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
HISTORIC HARMON PLACE, MINNEAPOLIS1315 Harmon Pl was home to Streed Electric and regional automobile manufacturer, Midland (Graham) Motors located in theHarmon Place Historic District. This was the heart of the Minneapolis automotive district for over fifty years. The buildings alongHarmon Place and Hennepin Avenue include many of the city’s best remaining examples of a vital industry that engagedthousands of entrepreneurs, workers and customers. The automotive buildings reflect the roller-coaster progress of the earlyautomotive industry and the twentieth-century economy as both evolved on the edge of downtown Minneapolis. Allen Harmonsettled the area in 1855, building his home on Hennepin Avenue and 13th Street. After the Civil War, he divided his property andsold it to wealthier citizens of Minneapolis. Until the turn of the century the area served as a prosperous neighborhood filled withmansions, townhouses, and residential hotels. Just after the turn of the century, automobiles grew in popularity and cityresidents started moving further out of the area and commuting back to work. After the first showroom opened in 1907, servicestations and repair and parts shops soon followed. The automotive industry began to develop near Harmon Place and HennepinAvenue. It became known as "Automobile Row."Between 1907 and 1930, the automotive building developed as a specificbuilding type addressed by real estate investors and architects. These buildings and their other counterparts such as partsbuildings and repair garages exhibit a range of Renaissance Revival, Prairie Style and Art Deco treatments, all arranged aroundthe important display windows. The façade arrangement allowed the prominent display of large vehicles, while leaving enoughroom for eye-catching exterior signs. As the wealthy citizens of Harmon Place migrated to the suburbs during the 1920’s, manyof their vacant homes were demolished or used for boarding houses and institutions. Several apartment buildings were erectedon these vacant lots, typically clad in brown or tan brick with common brick used at the rear and side elevations. RenaissanceRevival designs prevailed, with stone or terra cotta trim and heavy sheet metal cornices. The buildings have had few alterations, although brownstone and other masonry are evident. source: City of Minneapolis

ABOUT THE CITY OF MINNEAPOLISDOWNTOWN CORE/LORING PARKThree stadiums, river walks, world class theaters, live music venues, hotels, shopping and dining options. LoringPark is where mellow meets trendy, and it's the best kept secret in the city.Since 1940, the Walker ArtCenter has been a Minneapolis institution and one of the most visited modern and contemporary art museums inthe country. Across the street, the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is the largest urban sculpture park in theworld, featuring some 40 works of contemporary art, including the city’s iconic “Spoonbridge and Cherry.”Loring Park itself is the most complete park in the downtown area, with basketball and tennis courts, a wadingpool, picnic areas, a garden, a playground, a pond and a bandstand. Three sides face residential buildings andbusinesses, while the fourth looks onto the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, conveniently accessible by a bridgethat crosses over the zooming traffic on Lyndale Avenue. Nearby you'll find the very first Basilica in the UnitedStates, the Basilica of St. Mary. It's widely known for its ornamental and detailed Beaux-Arts architecture, andalso for hosting the Basilica Block Party every summer. The Basilica of St. Mary is more than a place of worship;it’s a gathering spot for the community to come together to appreciate diversity, art and culture. It's home toseveral art exhibits and galleries, and concerts are held there throughout the year. Unless you’re on the very northeastern edge of downtown, Loring Park is reasonable walking distance from mostpoints in downtown. From Nicollet, you can access the park via the Loring Greenway, a landscaped walkway withplaces to sit or art and fountains to Instagram. If you’d rather give your feet a break, just hop on pretty muchany bus running down Nicollet, get off at Grant Street and it’s about a three block walk from there. InsiderTip: There's actually a free bus that goes back and forth along Nicollet, just look for the buses marked "FreeRide."With all the apartment buildings around Loring Park, street parking can be fierce, but there's also the paidparking ramps option which you can find on the south and east sides of the park. source: minneapolis.org
