Little did I know when Ijoined the OCFF over a dozenyearsago that IwouldonedaybeitsPresident!Ifeeltrulyhon-ouredtohavebeenelectedtothispositionandlookforwardtoitschallenges. My first two years on theBoard have been enormouslyrewarding. This is one of thestrongestBoards in thehistoryof the OCFF, populated with abunchofreallysmartanddedi-cated people with an enormousrangeofexperienceandwisdom.Iwouldliketoparticularlywel-come the three new Directorswho were elected at this year’sconference:DanGreenwood,Ta-maraKaterandLarryLeBlanc.
Theyarealreadydemonstratingwhytheydeservedyoursupportatthepollsastheyjoinateamofindividualsthattrulycaresabouttheorganizationandisfullyen-gagedinitsfuture. Iwouldalsoliketoacknowl-edgetheenormouscontributionsof those Directors who left ourranksinthepastyear.HeartfeltthankstoAengusFinnan,PeterMacDonaldandKarenFlanaganMcCarthy,theformerPresident,TreasurerandSecretary.IwillbeforevergratefultothesethreeforhelpingtolaythefirmfoundationuponwhichtheOCFFcanmoveforward to become even better.ThanksalsotoSubaSankaran,who gave us two years on theBoard,buthadtoleavetoattendtoanexplodingcareer.Ourbestwishesforcontinuedsuccessgoouttoher.TinaDesRocheswasappointedbytheBoardtocom-plete Suba’s term as the Mem-ber-at-Large on the ExecutiveCommittee. Speaking of Peter MacDon-ald, after resigning from theBoard last October, he success-fully pursued the position ofExecutiveDirector.AstheheadoftheE.D.SearchCommittee,Icanonlysay that I’mdelightedhe did! As our new Executive
Director, Peter is already mak-inganenormousimpact.IknowthatheandtheBoardwillmakeagreatteam. So now what? As the NewYearunfolds,youwillbehearingmorefrommeandothersaboutthe future of the OCFF. Thetime has come for us to take acloselookatwhatwedoandhowwedoit,withaviewtomakingsomesignificantchanges.Inthecomingyear,yourBoardandstaffwillbeconductingafundamentalstrategic review to determinehowwecanbetterserveyou,themembership,andwe’llbeseek-ingyour input invariousways:surveys, Maplepost discussions,and face-to-face meetings. Ourannual conference is still thesinglebiggestthingwedoandwewanttoensurethatitcontinuestogrowandimprove,butwealsoneedtolookatimprovingandin-creasingtheservicesweprovidethroughouttheyear.IwouldaskeachofyoutothinkaboutwhatyouwouldliketheOCFFtodoforyouasafestival,organizationorindividualmember. AlongwithDanGreenwood,theChairofournewly-formedStrategicPlanningCommittee,Ilookforwardtothechallengeofpullingallofthisin-puttogetherandhelpingtomaketheOCFFeverythingyouwantittobe.

Swirlingaroundusarehar-bingersofdoomandgloom,readyto pounce and steal our senseofhopeandvitality:a financialcrisis, war, climate change andpolitical instability. We see artsfunding cuts, transit strikes(thisiswritteninOttawaonday45withnoend in sight...), andCanada’s winter weather – alltryingtobeatusdownandkeepuscaged. As individuals, it seems asthoughwecan’tdomuchtoeffectchange,thoughwedotry,don’twe? Yet we persevere and findmethodstocope,modify,conquerandsucceed.Whatisitaboutus,themembersoftheOCFF,whichmakesusmoreresilientthantheaverageperson? Welisten.Weact.Weneverstoptryingtomakethingsbetter.Others share those traits but Ipropose that because we do sointhecrucibleofourfestival-re-latedactivitiesweareabletoseeabrighter,morehopeful futureoneveryhorizon.Whatcouldbemoreofalitmustestofcharac-ter, talent and personal energythanworking,nearlyalwaysasavolunteer,toimprovethelotofour communities by spreadingmusic,dance,crafts,visualarts,hospitalityandcreativitytothosewhoneedhopeoratleastdiver-sion, for a day, a weekend or aweekormore? Forthoseofusluckyenoughto make a living in the Arts,as performers, administrators,suppliersorserviceorganizationstaff,therewardsgofarbeyonda somewhat dependable paycheque.Sincestartinginthispo-sitioninNovember,Ihavecometoworkeachdayfullyawarethatmyplaceinthisworldexistsasa“luxury”–Iworksothatoth-erscanplay.IfIdomyjobwell,
then OCFF members will feelbetter-supported and they willputsmilesonfacesandincreasetheculturalrichnessofourcom-munities. Howcanwe,together,makethe OCFF better able to meetthese challenges? We must askhard questions about what wedo and how we do it. We mustengageoneanother insubstan-tive,genuineandempatheticdia-logue.Wemustbeeagertohearconstructivecriticism.Then,wecan deliberate about our pres-entandourfuturewithoutfearof recriminationand we’ll onceagainrealizethatourchallengesare similar, often only changedin relative terms by the size ofour events. Isn’t that how thisorganizationbeganin1986? In recent meetings withOCFFfunders,wewerepraisedforthebreadthofourofferingsasanArtsServicesOrganization,andinthesamebreathencour-agedtodomoreforourmembers.TheOCFFstaffhelda two-dayretreatduringwhichwedidnoretreating!Weheldamagnifyingglasstoouractivitiesandcameaway convinced thatwe candomore.TheOCFFBoardhasem-barkedonaStrategicPlanningprocess that will involve mem-
bersateverystep.Wehavebegunface-to-face consultations withmembers, and they are alreadyyieldingsignificantresults,withmoremeetingsbeingplanned. Thecomingyearwillbeoneofchallenge,dialogueandexcitingrenewal.Therearefestival-goerswhoseliveswillbeforeveralteredbytheamazingexperiencestheyhave at festivals in 2009. Vol-unteerswillbeexhausted,thenrejuvenated. Organizers will beremindedofthereasonstheydowhattheydo.Thefolkandrootscommunity will be enriched inmorewaysthanwecanpossiblyimagine. Butfirst,welisten.

Iwasoutstackingwoodona somewhat grey drizzly daythis past September when myportable phone rang. I reluc-tantly answered (breaking thenicerhythmIhadgoing).ItwasMylesWarrenfromtheOntarioArts Council calling to tell methatIwasthisyear’srecipientoftheColleenPetersonSongwrit-ingAward.Thenewsjustabouttookmybreathaway.Inthenexthoursmythoughtsraced.Wow!Whatafantastichonour!Whatan amazing irony! Hey, we’rebothPeterboroughgirls! ItwassevenyearsagoattheBlack Sheep Inn in Wakefield,Quebecthatmyfriendandfel-lowsongwriterLauraBirdandI were sharing the stage. IbackedLauraonColleen’ssong‘Delaney’;she’dintroducedthesong with a little info aboutColleenandwhatagreatsong-writer she was. Coincidentally,Richard Patterson, Colleen’soldfriendandformerdrummer,was in the audience. After theshow,RichardandLaurachattedabout their mutual admirationforColleen,andRichardhadlotsofanecdotesaboutplayingandtouring with her. On the wayback to my place, Laura com-mentedthatshewishedsomeonewoulddosomethingtorecognizeColleen’scontributiontoCana-dianmusicandkeephermemoryalive.Shetossedabouttheidea–thedream–thatperhapsthereshouldbeasongwritingawardinColleen’sname. We talked about it somemore at my kitchen table, butlittle did I know Laura woulddevote almost the whole nextyeartoestablishingtheaward,working in tandem with Col-
leen’ssister,ShirleyRichardson.Together they raised $20,000,afterwardnegotiatingwith theOntario Arts Council to takeovermanagementoftheaward.InOctober2002,theyorganizeda fundraiserconcertatHugh’sRoominTorontoasatributetoColleen.Iwashonouredtopar-ticipateintheshowthatalsofea-turedQuartette’sSylviaTyson,CaitlinHanford,CindyChurchand Gwen Swick, Colleen’ssongwritingpartnerNancySim-monds,GeorgetteFry,KatherineWheatley,SuzieVinnick,LauraBird, Rebecca Campbell andTannis Slimmon. The all-starbackupbandconsistedofAnneLindsay,WendellFergusonandDavidWoodhead. Adayor sobefore thegig,manyofusgatheredatShirley’shouseforapractice.Shirleysaiditwasgreattohavemusiciansinthehouseagain-thattheevent
was healing for her. Colleen’sMomandseveralothermembersofherfamilyattendedthecon-certandenjoyedthetribute. The first Colleen PetersonSongwritingAwardwasgivenoutin2003,toEvalynParry.Sub-sequentyears’winners includeDavidGillis,LoriCullen&BrianMacMillan,AndySheppardandBrooke Miller. My award-win-ning song, ‘Feet Be Still’, wasinspiredbytheemailsIreceivedfromOliverSchroerlastwinter:thoseheartfeltmissiveshesentmanyfriends,studentsandfansabouthisjourneytotheendofhis life. InJune,aboutaweekbefore he died, I visited Oliverat Princess Margaret HospitalinTorontoandplayed‘FeetBeStill’forhim.Heapproved. The OCFF Board of Directors and Staff have been reviewing the requirements for membership in the OCFF. Effective immediately, all out-of-province Organizational Members will be classified as “Associate Organizational Mem-bers” and will become non-voting members. This will distinguish them from Ontario-based orga-nizations until a complete review of the membership structure can be completed. This change will bring us in line with the current OCFF Bylaws (8.02.02), which state that organizations must be Ontario-based.

It was an overcast weekin early October when I wentto Holy Cross School, nearMooney’s Bay, to teach severalgradesixstudentshowtomakefilmsusingsuper-8.Iwasgreet-edbyMr.Dundin,thegrade5/6teacher, and Brian Sanderson,who had spent the morningteaching folk songs that thestudentswouldlaterbesingingalongto,whiletheirfilmswereprojected at the OCFF confer-ence.Itaughtintheafternoonsthatweek,whileBriandidmusicinthemornings. Brian stayed with methroughoutthefirstafternoon,assisting with discipline. Thesomewhat unruly group cer-tainly didn’t lack enthusiasmabouttheproject.Bymid-week,Ihadseparatedthe12studentsintotwogroups,andtheywerefocusing on their storyboards.I had managed to teach themsomenewconcepts:filmgauge,persistenceofvision,highangle,medium-shot,termswhichtheywerebeginningtouse. ShootingdaywasThursdayof that week, and we workedfrom mid-morning until 3 pm,when the bell rang. The loca-tion forouroutdoor shootwastheyardbehindtheschool.Wehadeverykindofweatherthatday-rain,snow,sun,clearandcloudy skies. The light keptchanging.Anditwasvery,verycold.Ihadbroughtabagofextramitts,hatsandscarvesbecauseproductiondayscanbelong. The groups had organizedthemselvesfortheshoot,bring-ingwiththemcardboardboxesand other small props to useinthe films. Oneboy,Connor,
broughtabagofrocksfromhisyardspecially chosen touseaspropsinsomeoftheshots. Intheafternoon,inmyhasteto get ready between groups,I realized I had forgotten toload the camera, and when Irevealedthistothegroup,whowere already four shots intotheir production, the reactionwasutterrelief.“Hooray!”theyexclaimed.“Wegettodoitagainandnotlooklikesuchgoofs!” Not what I had expected.Thestudentshadapeaceaboutthe process, a confidence inplayingatthisnewexperience,as they stepped into the rolesofcameraperson,director,andactor.Theywereexperiencedatplaying,afterall,afinequalityforfilmmakers. Wheretheydidshowvulner-abilitywasovertheoutcomeofthefilms.“WhatifIscrewup?”a few of them asked me overthe course of the day. “You
can’t screwup,” Ikept repeat-ing, “We’re just experimentinghere.” Theirdelightinbeingonafilmcrewwasclear.Theyoungcamera operators showed amaturity that belied their age.Itwasfuntowatchthemtrans-form and grow serious abouttheir task. The ones that en-joyedbeinginfrontofthecam-erashone.Thenaturaldirectorscameforwardanddemonstratedleadership.Andtheyallworkedhard. Arguingeventuallygavewaytocooperation,andthenjoyinwhattheyhadcreated. These moments were cap-turedinthetwoblackandwhitefilmsthatthegradesixstudentsmade-allin-cameraedited. Afilm was made for each of thesongs that they performed atthe OCFF conference - BobSnyder’sParketteandHawksleyWorkman’sAMothisNotaBut-terfly.

Kaia, Lotus Wight and Ispenta greatweekendmakingmusic, talking music and per-formance and thinking quietlytogetheraboutlifeasmusicians.Wewalked,atefood,listenedtootherfolkstalkabouttheirexpe-riences,lookedforsomelightattheendoftunnels,mademusic,listenedtoothermusosmakingmusic, ate more food, playedmoretunes.Weallhadalottolearnfromeachother,somedi-rectlythroughmusic,andmuchtodowithjustbeing. We attended workshopswhichdealtwith“theindustry”,whichallthreeofusfoundhelp-fulbutalsoquitedaunting.Kaiais a fantastic young musician,butwasabouttosellherbanjoon the spot. It is good to hearabouthowtopromoteyourself,how to behave on stage andwhataperson’scareerhasbeenlike,butmaybenottothepointwheretheyoungmusiciansfeelliketheyoughtgiveitupanddosomethingelse.
Or maybe that is what weneed, a shocking look at thehuge world of the “music IN-DUSTRY”,testingyou,temptingyoutorunbutthenforcingyoutodiscoverthatyouwanttostayand face it. I reckon the truthis that it isadifficult road,nomatterwhoorwhatyouare.Itisalsoaroadwithhighpointsofecstasy and bliss. Through theprocessofthesementorshipsyougothroughalltheemotionalupsand downs and come out withalittlemoreclarityintheend.Tempered. Kaia arrived the morningof the showcase looking calmand beautiful, casual and re-fined.Sheexpressedherconcernwithnotbeingvery funnyandwonderedwhat shewould talkabout with the people. As wewatched the other performers,weelbowedeachotherandrolledoureyesinamazement.Werewecrazy to get up there and playouroldfiddlesandbanjos? Well, we performed ourpieces and shared a bit aboutwhatourweekendhadbeenlikeand we had a lot of fun doingit. And the people let us knowtheyenjoyedittoo.Kaiaalreadyhasafewfestivals linedupfornextsummer,withonlymoretocome.

CONFERENCE STEERING COMMITTEE PLANS by Dan Kershaw
Inmidwinteranot-so-youngman’s fancy lightly turns tothoughts of OCFF conferencespastand future. Althoughmytenth conference overall, the2008 edition was my first as amember of the newly-mintedConferenceSteeringCommittee(CSC).TheCSCwasformedlastyeartoengagemembersoftheOCFFboardinlong-rangeplan-ningfortheevent,andtomakethemmoredirectlyresponsibleforwhatgoesdownatwhatis,byalongmile,thesinglebiggest“deliverable”thatourorganiza-tionistaskedwith. In last summer’s editionof Folk Prints, I outlined thechangesthatwerebornofthe’07conferencesurveyand“Futureof the OCFF” session: increas-ing profile and programmingfor festivals, organizing panelsinto3streams,providingfewerbutmorein-depthsessions,notprogrammingagainsttheexhibithall, making better use of theSunday,andhelpingto“green”the conference via the “FlashYourFolk” initiativeandothermeasures. Now that we’re on
the other side of our gather-ing, it’s time to build on thefoundation of stuff that reallyworked, tweak the things thatneedtweaking,andsetasidethethingsthatdidn’tworkorwereunnecessary. To that end, a newly con-stitutedCSCisalreadyatworkonreviewingthisyear’ssurveyresults and consulting festivalmembers and others regard-ingnextOctober.JoiningPaulMills, Jennifer Fornelli andErinBarnhardtonthecommit-tee this year are incoming EDPeter MacDonald and RichardFlohil. Alsoaboard isCarolynBigley from the Georgian BayFolkMusicSociety(a.k.a.Sum-merfolk),whoseexperienceasafestivaladministratorandpastpresidentofboththeOCFFandFolk Alliance will no doubt beinvaluable. Lookingahead,IseetheCSCbecoming more active in plan-ningandorganizingthesprawlofprivatelatenightshowcasingfor the benefit of all involved,perhaps through ‘ownership’
of the inventoryofmusic floorrooms.Andnowthatthefesti-val stream isestablished, I seeus developing more structuredandinfo-ladenofferingsinthosesessions. We’re also going tobeabletodeliversessiontopicsandcontenttoyoumuchearlierthan in past years (our targetismid-May).Perhapsmostim-portantly,we’llbeprogrammingthat content in the context ofa 3-year conference plan, andeventually an overall strategicplanfortheorganization. Or kick it aroundonMaplepost.Evenifyouulti-matelythinkyourideaisanon-starter,expressit,becauseasidefromthefactthatitopenslinesofcommunication,youhavenoideahowvaluablethesethoughtsareingettingthesynapsesfiringamong us committee membersabout,say,asimilarbutmoredo-ableideathatwe’vecomeacross.Andinthecontextofathreeyearplan, these seeds planted nowmaywellbearfruit.

I believe it was MahatmaGandhiwhosaid,“Wemustbethechangewewishtosee.” Small positive changes canleadtogreatimpacts.Itiswiththis in mind that the OCFFBoard formed its first GreenCommittee in 2008. Thesededicated and environmentallyconscious individuals workedtogethertomakerecommenda-tionsonreducingtheorganiza-tion’s environmental footprint,particularlyattheOCFFconfer-ence. Waste reduction is a keycomponent to reducing yourenvironmental impact and theGreencommitteefocusedonthisasastartingpoint.Thereplace-ment of plastic water bottleswith the OCFF stainless steel
bottles played an integral rolein the conference waste reduc-tionplan. Thecommitteealsoattemptedtosetsomeguidelinesfor thenumberofpromotionalposters for the private show-cases. The Green Committee willcontinuetoworkonwastereduc-tionandnewideastoimplementin2009.OneexampleisaCar-bonTreePlantingprogramthatwouldoffsetthecarbonfootprintresulting from delegate traveltotheOCFFConference,alongwiththepotentialfora“Green”incentiveprogramforfestivals.The committee would like tostart compiling information tocomposeaGreenFestivalGuide.Thisguidewouldstartbyoffer-ing listings of socially respon-
siblesuppliersthatcanprovidefestivalsandvenueswithlocallyproduced,and/orfair-trade,envi-ronmentallyfriendlyproducts. As you can see, the GreenCommitteeiscommittedtomak-ingadifference,butwecan’tdothisalone!Weneedthehelpofvolunteersandsponsorstoputourplansintoaction.Ifyouareinterestedinsittingonthecom-mitteeorvolunteeringononeoftheinitiativesmentionedabove,please contact us; we’d love tohearfromyou.
