The study area
The Province of Benevento has a territorial extension of 2.071 kmq, 44.8 % of which is hilly and the
other 55.2 % is mountainous. The resident population in 2001 (ISTAT Census data) is 287.042
inhabitants (101,040 families). Compared to the previous census (1991) the population decreased about
2%. The population density is 138.6 inhabitants/km2.
