Preface
The First Book of Oboe So lo s has been compiled with the true beginner in mind, and it
should be possible to use this book from the very first lessons. The stylistic range is as
wide as is compatible with technical considerations and original pieces have been
specially written in the absence of other suitable material. We are indebted to Harold
Craxton for his arrangements of pieces from the F itzw illia m V irg in al B oo k.
As a general rule the pieces are progressive with regard to notes, i.e. a new note is
added in each new piece. Exceptions to this rule occur in the first five pieces where
we felt some duplication would be helpful, and in later pieces where we felt that,
musically and technically, some revision would be worthwhile. As a quick guide, the
range of each piece is indicated at the start with small notes.
One of the main problems in oboe playing - especially in the early stages - is that
of sustaining the quality of tone in long phrases. To help overcome this problem we
have left suitable resting-places, which are intended not just for breathing but for
resting the lip muscles and for moistening the reed, all three being essential to good
tone-quality. During these resting-places the musical interest is handed over to the
pianist, which should make for rhythmic and musical alertness on the part of both
oboist and pianist, since they must each be aware of the musical continuity.
In general we have tried to keep the accompaniments as simple as was musically
possible so as to enable young musicians to collaborate. If the oboist is also a pianist,
it would be helpful for him to play the piano part with a fellow oboist. Many of the
earlier pieces can be performed at first at a slower tempo than marked; as technique
develops, they can be brought up to speed.
Whilst we have made various editorial suggestions for dynamics and phrasing in
the roth-r Sth century pieces, we should be happy if oboists and their teachers with
other ideas felt free to use their initiative here. However, in all the original
compositions and the Beethoven, Schumann and Grieg pieces the phrasing and
dynamics should be meticulously observed.
Above all the oboist (and the pianist) should phrase musically-that is, to make the
music speak. Music, like words, must be shaped to make sense. When a sentence is
spoken, words are stressed to make the meaning clear. The same applies to notes
when a musical phrase is played. Short footnotes to each piece are included which we
hope may prove helpful to the oboist on technical and interpretive points.

Einlei tung
geeigneten Materials, eigens Originalstucke geschrieben.
Note hinzu.
nochmaliges Uben fiir lohnend hielten.

Here again concentrate on tone-quality and intonation
(playing in tune), and make sure of the tonguing and
slurring. In bars 2 and 4 and in similar places try to get a
rather soft tonguing action on the minims: think of
pronouncing d as in do rather than t asin tap.

Make a real difference between the legato (slurred) and the
staccato (short) notes. Be sure to make the interval C-A
really smooth and cleanly fingered -look out for any B that
might get in by mistake. You should use the softer tonguing
action on the minims in bars 8 and 10, and give a slight
expressive stress to the notes with lines above them (tenuti).
Spiele die Legato-(gebundenen) und Stakkato-(kurzen)
Noten wirklich unterschiedlich. Sei sicher, dall du das
Intervall C-A wirklich ftiissig spielst und sauber greifst -
ausdrucksvolle Betonung geben.

This was originally a song so you should try to produce a
cantabile (singing) tone. The tonguing between the slurs
throughout the piece should be very gentle.

Play the slurred notes very smoothly and always keep your
fingers as near to the oboe as possible so that your fingering
can be smooth too. In bars 3 and 4 think of the musical
phrase as going through the crotchet rests. See how quietly
you can play the last four bars.
spielen kannst.

Practise this gay little folk-tune slowly until you have
mastered the phrasing. You can afford to exaggerate the
slurs, staccati and marcati (accents) to help you give the piece a
more lively character. Notice that from bar 7 onwards the
second quaver of each slurred pair has a staccato mark ~ ;
it should be shortened but not tongued.

The commas indicate the phrase-endings, and thus where
you should breathe. Here again, you need smooth tonguing
between the slurs. When you have learnt the fingering for
low D and C and can play them comfortably, try the
original ending which is in small notes.

As the title suggests, you should shape the phrases here as if
you were singing them. (You could even make up some
words to fit the music, if it would help.) Practise some
repeated soft tongued low D's to help make the start of bar 6
easier. The fingering between the intervals F-A, C-A and
B-G should be as clean as possible. Notice that the piano
takes over the tune in bars 9-12 and that you are only
accompanying it.
Ube mehrere wiederholte, weich angestoBene tiefe Ds,

This piece should have a strong rhythm and a clearly
defined shape to the phrases. Be careful in bar 4 to make the
C louder than the G; on many oboes the G will be the
stronger note, so you may have to lighten it considerably.

This is in the main a gentle piece and you must concentrate
on a beautiful legato within and between the slurs. See how
quietly you can play the last phrase; the crescendo anddiminuendo here should be very slight.

not staccato, but separated or detached, as we say. It should
sound elegant and stately.
Dieses Menuett bedarf eines deutlichen AnstoJ3es bei den
nicht gebundenen Noten - nicht stakkato, jedoch abgetrennt.
Es sollte elegant und wiirdevoll klingen.

Here we have ~ phrasing again, so remember to shorten
the last note under the slur each time. This piece must have a
rustic character and a very strong rhythmic sense. Again,
distinguish between tenuti and marcati; they have a subtle
musical difference which is important.
Unterscheide
wiederum zwischen tenuti und marcati; zwischen ihnen
besteht ein feiner musikalischer Unterschied, der wichtigist.

Beethoven marked this song to be performed in a
somewhat comic fashion; try playing it rather pompously.
He has doubled the melodic line (oboe and piano) through-
out, which will give you good practice for intonation and
precision of ensemble. Watch out for the change of key at
bar 9.

The rhythm is very important in this piece, so make sure
that the dotted rhythms IIre exact. The tied notes
in bars 2-3 and 6-7 should be given their exact values.
spielst. Den angebundenen Noten in den Takten 2-3 und
6-7 sollte ihr genauer Wert gegeben werden.

Quiet bur wry expressive playing with a beautiful legato
tone IS needed here. Make a real difference between p and pp
inbars 1: \ and 17 . Don't try to play p too quietly or you may
nor give vourself a chance for the pp.

Try singing to yourself the melody of this song by Mozart;
it needs sensitive playing and a real cantabile tone. Unless
you have an alternative left-hand F key, you will need to use
the forked F fingering quite often. The tone on a forked F
can sometimes be rather weak, so you may need to give it a
little more air pressure to match its tone with that of the
other notes. Watch the intonation too. If your F is not
vented, you may find it helps to add the EDkey.

sure not only to count correctly but also to listen carefully to
the piano part. Where you have a quaver rest, think of the
melody as going on through the rest.
