• Students at the essential level, modify the activity by:
• Reducing the number of steps students complete independently (use backwards chaining)
• Reducing the language required, students may sort the cards without describing or labeling
• Students at the intermediate level, modify the activity by:
• Using less complex language
• Utilizing peer support
• Students at the advanced level: use the provided instructions
Materials:
• Safety Title Cards (provided)
• Fire Drill Safety Cards (provided)
• Teacher’s Key (provided)
• Fire Drill Expectations Poster Visual Strip (provided)
• Baskets (2)
• Scissors
• Tape
• Bag
• Poster board or chart paper
Preparation:
1. Print, laminate, and cut:
a. Safety Title Cards
b. Fire Drill Safety Cards
c. Fire Drill Expectations Poster Visual Strip
Variation: Students cut out the cards.
2. Print the Teacher’s Key for your reference as you conduct the activity.
3. Tape a Safe Card to the outside of one basket and the Unsafe Card to the outside of another basket.
4. Place the Fire Drill Safety Cards in a bag.

Instructions:
1. Have the visual strip on hand and refer to it throughout the activity to guide students.
2. Direct students to:
a. Pick one card from the bag
b. Describe what the card says or depicts
c. State whether this idea is safe or unsafe, and then place the card into the correct basket
Variation: If the idea is unsafe, either the student, another classmate, or teacher describes a safe alternative. The student or teacher then models the safe behavior for the class
d. Pass the bag of cards to the next student
3. Continue until all cards are sorted into the correct category baskets.
4. Once all cards are sorted, take out the poster board or chart paper and write “Safe Fire Drill Behavior” at the top.
5. Students take turns pasting the safe fire drill behaviors onto the poster.
6. Hang the poster in the classroom to reinforce safe fire drill behavior.
