Dear Friends,
Consider what is going on in the world around Jacob’s desperate family described in Genesis. It’s not altogether different from the events of today:
An assortment of developing nations struggle forexistence in the shadow of a global super power.
Economic challenges create turmoil between thehaves and have-nots
A devastating drought contributes to a disastrousfamine that threatens people with starvation.
Desperate people are migrating in order to survive, but there is oppositionto the immigration.
The super power feels their homeland security is threatened by espionageand potential terrorists infiltration.
Misery is wielded through human trafficking, prostitution, incest, andrape.
Roaming gangs of youth commit random acts of violence.
The family unit is torn apart through pride, rivalry, and jealousy.
In the midst of it all, comes the resonating word of the Lord from the very first chapter of Genesis, “Let there be Light;” then throughout the book of Gen-esis we read how God’s word calls forth light in a world of darkness.
The first book of the Bible gives glimpses of God’s light penetrating dark corners in the lives of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and their families. These patriarchs are imperfect people, like you and me; but God is at work giving the light of grace, blessing them, and calling them to be a blessing to others.
I invite you to read from Genesis this week. If you’d like assistance selecting what to read, you may go to my blog at IN THE BIG-N-ING. If you wish to view this week’s sermon or see a tool I’ve developed for keeping track of Jacob’s children you may go to God is My Hero.
We’ve had a wonderful start to our fall season at church. Thanks to Ed Yarnelle for a lovely recital last week, to Carol Ley for her cooking at Kirk Night, and to everyone who made Rally Day a great success this past Sunday: Ber Tucker, the Christian Education Board, and all the cooks and helpers who contributed to such a fun day!
See you in church,
Steve

FAMILY MINISTRIES CORNER
This week at church I'm
teaching the children
about Moses and the
Exodus out of Egypt.
The picture below from
Walk Thru the Bible is a
reminder of the sto-
ry. The People are
walking right through
the Exit. The name Exodus comes from two Greek words that mean
“the way out” or “exit.” At the end of the previous book of Genesis, the
Hebrew people were a “chosen few” living in the favor of the Pharaoh
of Egypt. But after Joseph died, a new king came to the throne of
Egypt who felt no obligation to Joseph’s descendants. As a result, the
Hebrews became slaves in a land that was not their own. Exodus is the
story of their deliverance. In the first half of the book (chapters 1-18),
God calls Moses to request release from Pharaoh, to take Israel through
the “exit” from Egypt, and to lead their long journey to the Promised
Land. In chapters 19-40, is the story of how God wanted the people to
live good lives.
Here is the theme memory verse for Exodus: "... God spoke all these
words: 'I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the
land of slavery.'" Exodus 20:1

blog at StevenJayDavis.com… and be sure to join us in church on
Sunday, too!
