The first Full Moon of each month is named according to the Farmer’s Almanac List. Theorigins of this List of Full Moons are derived from Native American heritage. On Feb. 14,2014 the first Full Moon of February appeared on Valentine’s Day and was named the“Snow Moon” (aptly named!). This picture was captured just as the Full Moon was risingover the tree line in our back yard.

Oh No! More Snow…

Chris Cupp was not so happy to be shoveling snow AGAIN. Sammi Mosley stopped to take a break from shoveling herdriveway.

Jesse Adair’s smiling, frozen face shows that he wasn’t let-ting the snow get him down.

By: Teresa HazelLast Friday people across the District found themselves digging out from another heavy snowfall. It came on the heels of almost Spring-like weather the previous two days and was followed by more

cold temperatures dipping well below freezing.Mother Nature doesn’t seem to be giving us a break this winter with another week of cold temperatures in the forecast. Keep smiling everyone!

Feeling the Winter Blues?

By: Teresa HazelHave you had enough of

winter and feeling a little rest-less? What is there to do? Whynot plan a “staycation” sug-gests Rozi Flatt who ownsBombshell in Fort Frances.

“If we can’t get away for avacation, we have to plan astaycation or else we will goinsane”, laughs Flatt and adds:“If we don’t, we’ll get grumpyat the children”.

What is a staycation? Ac-cording to Wikipedia, it is aperiod in which an individualor family stay home and par-ticipate in leisure activitieswithin driving distance, sleep-ing in their own beds at night. The Merriam-Webster diction-ary defines it as a vacationspent at home or nearby.

At the local salon, guestswere arriving from the snowand cold for services they se-lected from the Bombshellbeauty menu including hair-cuts, highlights, manicures andpedicures.

“Since the sun can’t lightenthe hair right now, we can doit for you”, said ShariHumphrey who works as astylist at the beauty shop along

with Maureen Lesmesuriers,Heather Dobransky-Johnson,Jana Murray and Terry Hyatt.

Flatt is the Esthetician aswell. She brings a cheerfulnessand optimism to everyonewhen they walk in the door.

Shawna McRitchie came infor an esthetic service sportingher Team Canada sweatshirt incelebration of the CanadianWomen’s Hockey gold, theCanadian Curling gold medalsand the excitement of thesemi-final men’s hockey gamewhere Team Canada beatTeam U.S.A.

“I have clients that come into prepare for vacations awaybut there are many who comebecause they aren’t goingaway and need a little pick-me-up”, explained Flatt.

I asked Rozi what else shewould suggest people do fortheir staycation?

“Dinner and drinks”, shesays enthusiastically. “Fish-bowl Fridays at BostonPizza”!

So that’s where I go to seewho else is thinking the sameway as Rozi.

Tanya and Brad Townsonwere out for dinner in the

restaurant.“We’re here to get out of the

cold”, they explained. “And totake a break from snowplow-ing”, adds Brad.

Meanwhile, Chris and Sher-ree Denby were having a datenight with drinks and a few ap-petizers in the lounge.

“It’s so frustrating, theweather”, says Sherree. “Wewere going to have a skatingparty in the backyard but it’stoo windy and snowy so wehad to cancel”, she adds withher disappointment apparent.

“It helps break the monotonyof staying inside”, noted ChrisDenby as to the reasoning foran evening out. “And…I’mputting off shoveling”, he sayswith a smile.

A few more suggestions foryour Staycation: bowling, massage, a pool party at one ofthe local hotels, a shoppingday trip, lunch with a friend atone of the many eating estab-lishments available in Border-land, a spa day at any of thelocal salons, a movie night, ordinner out with the family.

Bon Voyage…have fun onyour staycation at home in theRainy River District!
