EMILY VALENTINE
Emily Valentine is a contemporary mixed media artist living and working in both Australia and her
native New Zealand.
Valentine majored in jewellery at Sydney College of the Arts finishing in 1987, and worked in the
fashion industry for 7 years. As well as exhibiting in galleries in Australia and New Zealand, her work
is often used in theatre, dance and performance.
She says of her recent work: “Feathers are my paint. Over the last ten years I have developed my
own technique and style using feathers from found sources.' I wish to discuss how attitudes to
wearing animals and birds have changed. Is this just because of fashion, or has society become more
caring of animals? I wish to stimulate the viewer to question how we sub-consciously classify
animals, as pet or pest, valued or worthless, beautiful or plain and why?”
Valentine is well recognised in the arts field. She received a grant to co-curate 'Melding' an
exhibition of contemporary jewellery from NSW that toured to 8 regional galleries throughout
Australia from 2005-6. And in 2007 Valentine was awarded a merit prize in the Norsewear Art, the
New Zealand Contemporary Art Award, and the 2007 Acquisition Prize by the Northern Territory
Craft Council.
