• The second fashion fad started with exercise. Exercise became a big deal in the 80's and exercise clothes became bright and worn casually. Lycra and spandex was a big material used, usually coloured in brilliant greens and pinks and loose knitted T, played an important role.

1980’s:

• People used fashion to express themselves

• But to some extent conservative fashion theory was missing here!

• Leggings, legwarmers, and anything brightly colored was in style

• Lots of glitz!

• The 1980's brought two very different styles in. One style ruled the business world especially with the women. Women's business suits had broader shoulders, with the help of shoulder pads, the suits resembled those of the 30's except with much brighter colours like yellows, blues and pinks.

1980’s

Page 16: Fashion Fad of 80s...

• The reason behind the sudden popularity of shoulder pads for women in the 1980s may be that women in the workplace were no longer unusual, and wanted to "power dress" to show that they were the equals of men at the office. Many women's outfits had Velcro on the inside of the shoulder where various sized shoulder pads could be attached.

The 1980’s

• “The power look” – a uniform style of suits and blazers with shoulder pads called “Power dressing”.

• Remained popular throughout the 1980s and even the first three years of the 1990s.

Mini SkirtsThe shorter the better… • women and girls loved miniskirts. • Denim was the most popular, but miniskirts

were made in a number of other materials including knit and leather.

• These were often paired with leggings. The only people who weren’t wearing miniskirts in the 80s were men (ok, well some did) and elderly women.

Leg Warmers were not just for exercising in the 80s. These were actually worn as a fashion item! Usually in conjunction with a short mini skirt.

Whatever be the reasoning was at the time, at least one or two pairs of leg warmers could be found in every girl’s dresser

• You know how cute Christmas ornaments look on a tree? During the 80s we thought the same would apply to our ears. Huge earrings from various costume jewelry collections were all the rage and if your earrings didn’t touch your shoulder, they weren’t big enough.

Fingerless Gloves

• Fingerless gloves were another odd 80s fashion fad, and it seems to be coming back into style.

• From romance enthusiasts to punk-rock fans, fingerless gloves were popular with quite a variety of 80s genres.

• The fingerless gloves are forever interconnected with Madonna's look in the mid-80s in her boy toy phase.

Oversized Tops 80s fashion fad of oversized tops. Big sweaters, sweatshirts and t-shirts were totally hot and wearing them over a miniskirt or a pair of leggings made them even hotter. These tops were most often belted with big and gaudy, low slung belts with the top bloused over the belt.

Parachute pants are a style of trousers characterised by the use of nylon, especially ripstop nylon. In the original loose-fitting, extraneously zippered style of the late 70s/early 80s, “parachute” referred to the pants’ synthetic nylon material. In the later 80s, “parachute” may have referred to the extreme bagginess of the pant. They are typically worn as menswear and are often brightly colored. Parachute pants became a fad in US culture in the 1980s as part of an increased cultural appropriation of breakdancing. Parachute pants played a pivotal role in the 1980s in fashion.

Ray-Ban Wayfarer Sunglasses

Ray-Ban Wayfarers were by far the most popular sunglasses worn in the 80s. Originally designed in the 1950s, the Wayfarer had declined in popularity by the late 70s. That all changed in 1983 when Tom Cruise wore them for his break out movie role in the film Risky Business. Demand for the glasses took off with hundreds of thousands being sold immediately after the release of the movie. The glasses could be seen on many of the top celebrities of the 80s, including Michael Jackson, Don Johnson, and Madonna.

Jellies

were shoes made out of PVC plastic that, for some reason, were very popular in the 80s. The shoes were transparent and shiny (hence the Jelly name) and usually had some kind of glitter on them. You could usually pick up a pair of these "high quality" shoes for about a dollar!
